MALBIS PLANTATION From Greece to America (2014)
Founded in 1906 by Greek immigrants, the Malbis Plantation in Baldwin County, Alabama, was one of the most successful communes in America. Greek was the everyday language; the Greek Orthodox faith was strictly observed. Together the colonists carved a natural paradise out of the wilderness, living as one family without marriage or children.
In the late 1960s, the last colonists pooled their resources to build a Greek Orthodox masterpiece that ranks as one of the most beautiful Orthodox Churches in America.

In the case of Malbis Plantation, The director Robert Clem was drawn to a story with an interesting arc.
Near the beginning of the 20th century, an Eastern Orthodox monk named Antonius Markopoulos left Greece, came to the United States and changed his name to Jason Malbis. With partner William Papageorge, he bought 120 acres of land in Baldwin County to found a community that arguably was a commune, if not exactly in the common sense of the word.
Members preserved their Greek heritage as they ventured into a number of successful commercial ventures including farming operations, an ice plant and a bakery.
It might come as a surprise to some, but despite the strong religious component of the community’s character, the signature church wasn’t begun until after Malbis’ death in 1942.
Malbis seemed to focus on work, leading an industrious little society, and “they had a religious community within the plantation house,” Clem said. But the creation of the church was one of his last wishes, according to community history.
The Church was dedicated in 1965 by Bishop Ikavos as 'The Holy Patriarchal And Stavropegic Monastery Of The Entrance Of The Theotokos In Alabama', Bp. Ikavos came to Malbis after he marched with Martin Luther King in Selma.
The world in which Malbis had built a thriving community was changing rapidly. The arrival of U.S. 90, routed through Malbis land, had provided opportunities for a hotel and restaurant; but when the Interstate era arrived in the form of I-10, those businesses withered. The population of the community declined and it gradually shut down its businesses.
The increasing population of Baldwin County brought new pressures and new opportunities, with portions of the Malbis-held land, which had peaked at around 10,000 acres, being parceled out for development.
The historic Eastern Orthodox Church at Malbis is the most visible symbol of a distinctive community, but there's much more to the story.
The community still exists, still linked by a Greek and Orthodox heritage and familial ties. The church now sits near an interstate exit that serves sprawling residential developments and a gigantic shopping centers.
Clem said his goal was to provide “a complete picture of the history of the place.” He’s fascinated, in part, by the graceful arc of the Malbis story.
Clem said that producer Mary Riser of Fairhope had suggested to him that the Malbis story would make part of a nice series on “American Utopias.” The series might or might not come to pass, but the title still applies to Malbis. It was a world apart, Clem said, yet one which was very practical about its dealings with the larger society. Just as importantly, it seemed to avoid the internal problems that wrecked so many other aspiring Utopias.
The community holds a lasting fascination because Malbis at its peak represented a vision “so different from a contemporary mindset,” Clem said. Its inhabitants “really were very successful in this communal setting,” he said.
