Manassas National Battlefield Park - July 17. 2016
Today, July 21, 2016, is the 155th anniversary of the first major land battle of the civil war, the battle of first Manassas, or the battle of first Bull Run, depending on which side your'e on. So what better way to commemorate it than to visit the battlefield itself. Here in this now quiet and serene place, 155 years ago cannons blazed and many brave soldiers on both sides fought and died. The civil war tore the nation apart, but after the civil war, America became one and became the greatest nation on Earth as we know today.

Manassas National Battlefield Park, Virginia - Battle of Bull Run
We recently visited the Manassas National Battlefield Park in (near) Manassas, Virginia. This is the site of two major Civil War battles: The First Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861 and The Second Battle of Bull Run, which took place on August 28-30, 1862. These battles are also referred to as The First Battle of Manassas and The Second Battle of Manassas. It was here that Confederate General Thomas J. Jackson received his nickname of Stonewall. There is both a statue of Stonewall Jackson here and a monument to Confederate General Bernard Bee, who is credited for giving Stonewall his famous nickname before he was killed during the battle here. This is a great place to visit... so much history and sadness but a very beautiful and peaceful place too (quite the contrast to 150 years ago!).

Manassas, Virginia, USA
My visit at Manassas National Battlefield Park, Virginia, on the 13th of September, 2015. I remember I had some problems in driving from one place to the another, due to the not so clear road signs but the place is fantastic.
The so called Manassas Campaign was a series of military engagements in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War: Hoke's Run, Blackburn's Ford, First Bull Run (Manassas) and Second Bull Run (Manassas).
At First Bull Run (Manassas) Thomas Jonathan Jackson, Confederate Brigadier General, rose to prominence and earned his most famous nickname Stonewall. After the battle, Jackson was promoted to Major General.
First Bull Run (Manassas) and Second Bull Run (Manassas).

Manassas National Battlefield Park: Site of TWO Great Civil War Battles!
In this episode we travel to Manassas, Virginia, about 30 miles east of Washington DC, to visit Manassas National Battlefield Park in Manassas, Virginia, site of not one, but TWO great battles of the Americn Civil War, both won by the Confederacy.
The first battle of Manassas, also called the first battle of Bull Run, was fought on July 21, 186. It was the first major battle of the Civil War and Union troops were confident they wold be able to defeat this ragtag bunch of rebels in a matter of hours.
Instead, Union forces were routed and sent retreating almost all the way back to Washington.
The second Battle of Manassas was fought more than a year later on August 28 to 30, 1862 and also resulted in a resounding Confederate victory!
In this video, I explore the battlefield and show you some of the sights you can see there, like the Henry hill house and the Stone house, which both served as field hospitals during the first battle of Manassas.
But there are also moments of levity as I re-create scenes from Scarface and The Walking Dead.

Hooe Family Cemetery in Manassas National Battlefield Park
While visiting Manassas National Battlefield Park in Virginia I found this cemetery. The Hooe Family Cemetery contains the tomb stone of Captain Bernard Hooe, Senior. Captain Bernard Hooe was a Captain of Militia in Prince William Co., VA, Oct 17, 1776. On April 7, 1780, Bernard Hooe was deeded part of the Buckhall land by his parents, John and Anne. He died on April 8, 1810, as a result of a duel. He was prominent in local political affairs and represented Prince William County, Virginia in the state legislature. He had a political quarrel with a neighbor, James Kemp, in which he struck Kemp with a whip. The subsequent duel took place on the Maryland shore, across the Potomac River. He was mortally wounded and died at Rippon Lodge, the home of Col. Thomas Blackburn. (Descendants of Rice Hooe).

Ranger Hank Elliott leads a hike from the stone bridge, south along Bull Run to the Portici plantation, and north again to Henry Hill, on the 158th anniversary of the First Battle of Bull Run / First Manassas. A serious heat wave prevented a longer hike that was planned.
