MANDAPESHWAR CAVES A FORGOTTEN LEGACY
19°14'42.6N 72°51'12.9E
THE NAME OF THE CAVE MANDAPESHWAR MEANS MANDAP PE ESHWAR (HALL OF PAINTING OF LORD).
THE MANDAPESHWAR CAVES (मंडपेश्वर गुफा) IS AN 8TH CENTURY ROCK-CUT SHRINE DEDICATED TO SHIVA LOCATED NEAR MOUNT POINSUR IN BORIVALI, A SUBURB OF MUMBAI IN MAHARASHTRA, INDIA.
THERE ARE FOUR ROCK-CUT SHRINES IN MUMBAI: ELEPHANTA CAVES, JOGESHWARI CAVES, MAHAKALI CAVES, MANDAPESHWAR CAVES. ALL FOUR CAVES HAVE THE SAME SCULPTURES.
THE MANDAPESHWAR CAVES ARE SMALLER AND LESSER KNOWN AS COMPARED TO THE KANHERI CAVES IN THE SANJAY GANDHI NATIONAL PARK IN BORIVALI EAST. THE RUINS OF AN OLD PORTUGUESE-BUILT CHURCH STAND ON TOP OF THE CAVES.
THE CAVES ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN BUILT APPROXIMATELY 1500 TO 1600 YEARS AGO, NEARLY AROUND THE SAME TIME AS JOGESHWARI CAVES (WHICH WERE BUILT BETWEEN 520-550 CE).
MOST OF THE EARLY ROCK-CUT TEMPLES AND ROCK-ART IN INDIA WAS CREATED BY BUDDHIST MONKS.
DURING THE OCCUPATION OF THE KHANERI CAVES, THE BUDDHIST MONKS FOUND ANOTHER LOCATION WHERE THEY CREATED A HALL OF PAINTINGS. THE CAVE WAS CREATED BY THE BUDDHIST MONKS AND THEN THEY HIRED TRAVELLING PERSIANS TO PAINT. THE BUDDHIST MONKS ASKED THE PERSIANS TO PAINT THE LIFE OF LORD SHIVA.
THIS CAVE HAS SEEN THROUGH TIME, WORLD WAR. DURING THIS PERIOD THE MONOLITHIC PAINTINGS WERE BADLY DEFACED. AFTER THE INVASION OF THE MARATHAS IN THIS AREA IN THE YEAR 1739, THE ENTIRE AREA WAS PILLAGED AND BURNT. THIS INCLUDED THE COLLEGE, CHURCH AND EVERY OTHER BUILDING AROUND. FOR YEARS THIS AREA WAS DESERTED.
SOMEWHERE IN TIME THE CAVES WERE AGAIN DISCOVERED, THE CAVES ARE DECLARED AS AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE SITE AND THEREFORE ARE PROTECTED UNDER LAW.
REACHING TO CAVE IS EASY FROM DAHISAR RAILWAY STATION, MUMBAI.

Mandapeshwar Caves is an 8th Century rock-cut shrine dedicated to Shiva located near Mount Poinsur in Borivali, a suburb of Mumbai in Maharashtra, India.
One must have heard about the caves of Elephanta, Ajanta, Ellora, Mahakali and Kanheri near Mumbai. But not many would have come across the caves of Mandapeshwar. Forgotten as a result of the passage of time and rapid development of the city, these caves are isolated between Dahisar and Borivali.
Mandapeshwar when translated means the hall of paintings of the lord. Built approximately around 1500 to 1600 years ago, these are the only caves which are dedicated to Lord Shiva, unlike other caves which were predominantly dedicated to Buddhism. The caves were originally located on the banks of the Dahisar river, but later the river changed its course.
In the 17th century these caves were burnt down by the Marathas; at present the surviving caves are preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
**Best Time To Visit**
The caves can be visited throughout the year as the weather remains pleasant most of the time; however, the summer months may tend to get hot and humid.
**More About The Place**
The Mandapeshwar caves are relatively smaller and lesser known as compared to the Kanheri caves which are found in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali East. The caves at Mandapeshwar are believed to have been built approximately 1500 to 1600 years ago which is nearly around which the Jogeshwari caves were built.
1600 Year's Old Mandapeshwar Caves Mumbai Maharashtra {MY DIARY EP 42}
This video is all about how to reach Mandapeshwar and some information about it, The caves are built approximately 1500 to 1600 years ago, The sculptures in these caves are estimated to have been carved out at the same period as of those seen in the more splendid jogeshwari caves, The caves were originally cut by Buddhist monks later on it was occupied by brahmins, the name mandapeshwar means Hall of the Lord, Most of what can be seen on the walls now are just broken down remains which are sad reminders of its glorious past, After the invasion of the marathas in this area in the year 1739, for years this area was deserted, somewhere in time the caves were again discovered, it under the protection of Indian Archaeology Society, This cave has seen through time, World war, General people used to stay, Initial Portuguese used it as a place of prayer. These caves were witness to a series of invasions in the surrounding areas by different rulers and each time the caves were used for a different reason, sometimes even for things like housing by the armies or sometimes by refugees.

Mandapeshwar Caves
The caves are situated in Mount Poinsur, Borivali, a suburb of Mumbai. Originally, the caves were on the banks of the Dahisar River but later the course of the river changed. The name of the neighbourhood was derived from this temple. It is believed that the name of Mount Poinsur, on which the Saint Francis D'Assisi High School is situated, is a corruption of the name Mandapeshwar. The Mandapeshwar caves are smaller and lesser known as compared to the Kanheri caves in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali East. The ruins of an old Portuguese-built church stand on top of the caves. The Immaculate Conception Church is located to its south end. There is an open ground in front of the caves which is used as a playground and parking area by slumdwellers from the slum in front of it. The Swami Vivekanand Road runs in front of this cave.

काँहेरी गुफा का रहस्य । मुंबई । mumbai | Canheri caves
Mandapeshwar caves | Mumbai | Dahisar
Mandapeshwar Caves is cut out of a hill in the quiet suburb of Borivali, hidden in a nook behind an open plot of ground just behind the “Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church”. It was built around 550 AD, around the same time as the nearby Jogeshwari Caves and the Kondivite / Mahakali Caves. But the history of these caves is filled with strife, and the cave has gone through several iterations of being converted back and forth between a Hindu temple and a Chapel.
Originally built on the banks of the Dahisar river which flows nearby, it is now separated from the river due to a change in the river’s course over the years.
