The Palace has been the creation of different rulers of Jaisalmer who ruled the former State of Jaisalmer, however the most beautiful portions of the Palace were built in the reign of His Highness Maharawal Jawahir Singh Ji in the beginning of the twentieth century who then gifted the Palace to his son Maharaj Hukam Singh Ji.
Maharaj Hukam Singh Ji and his family continue to reside in this Palace which is famous for its Handmade Stone Carvings and have transformed this Palace into a premier heritage hotel. A noticeable feature of Mandir Palace is its tower also referred as the Badal Vilas, which stands out as the tallest structure below the hill-top city fort.Open spaces and courtyards give a feeling of the bygone era. Mandir Palace - Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer, renowned for its magnificent 9th centuries old golden fort, amazing sand dunes and intricate stone carvings in the houses of the ancient city is any visitors delight.
A prominent landmark in this spectacular heritage city is Mandir Palace, which had been the residence of the rulers of Jaisalmer for more than two centuries.
Mandir Palace is an exquisitely carved architectural marvel of ornate balconies, canopies and delicately carved screens that represent a high point of local craftsmanship in its finest and purest form.
A noticeable feature of Mandir Palace is its tower called ‘Badal Vilas’, which stands out as the tallest structure below the hill-top city fort.
The Jawahir Vilas are part of a royal complex called the Mandir Palace (meaning Temple Palace as two temples were originally built here). The first temple, dedicated to Lord Rama, was built in 1770 at the request of the mother of Maharawal Mulraj II. Then, in about 1810, the Maharawal himself, got a temple built and dedicated it to Girdhariji (another name of Lord Krishna). Subsequent rulers then added palaces to the complex with Maharawal Jawahir Singh (1914-49) making it his residence on a regular basis. The star attraction of the complex is the Jawahir Vilas with its tiers of very ornate balconies, canopies and delicately carved screens that are truly exquisite and represent a high point of local craftsmanship in its finest and purest form. Inside there is a lovely glasshouse whose walls have extensive glass and lattice work in gold of different hues and designs. The Durbar Hall, for state assemblies, has latticed screens and carved balconies and motifs that are spectacular indeed. Part of the complex is now a very posh hotel.

History
Over two centuries ago the foundation stone of Mandir Palace was laid by Maharawal Moolrajji when the temples of Shri Ram and Shri Girdhariji were built along with the Palace complex around the temples. He and his successors subsequently made several additions to this magnificent Palace.
The latest and the most beautiful portion of Mandir Palace known as the ‘Jawahir Vilas’ was built by Maharawal Jawahir Singhji in the beginning of the twentieth century. Mandir Palace is well-known for its fine stone carvings. Its architecture is Indo- Saracenic : a blend of the Rajput style and some Islamic patterns that were carried to Jaisalmer through the caravans from Afghanistan & Persia.
Recently, Raj Kumar Dr. Jitendra Singh grandson of Maharawal Jawahir Singhji and owner of Mandir Palace transformed this Palace into a premier heritage hotel. He welcome's you to his home.

Tourist Places
Visiting Jaisalmer itself means a visit to the Jaisalmer Fort. Built over the Trikuta hill, this fort is the biggest and the most beautiful landmark of the city. The fort is occupied by shops, stalls, and a number of other business concerns. This fort accommodates quarter of the city's population.
• Just outside the fort is the Manak chowk, the famous marketplace of Jaisalmer. It is a good place for bargaining the local products.
• The Jain temple, a place worth visiting, is also situated inside the fort itself. The temple, made between 12th and 15th century, bears testimony to Rajasthan's unique artistry.
• Havelis are the mansions built by the wealthy merchants, which are still in very good condition. The intricate craftsmanship is beyond parallel. The havelis like the Patwon-ki-Haveli and Salim-Singh-ki-Haveli are remarkable for their exclusive cutwork, yellow and red stone treatment and the bracket-shaped decoration of peacocks.
• Gadsisar Sagar Tank is a famous place for an outing. Earlier it used to be the source of water for the entire city. A number of migratory birds flock this place during the winter season.
• Desert Culture Center and Museum is another place that would give the visitor a clear insight of the place. The museum has a number of old coins, different kinds of textile, traditional Rajasthani instruments, and some fossils that were found in the desert.
• Sam Sand Dunes, situated at the edge of the Thar Desert, is a place gaining tremendous tourist attraction these days. This sandy place is famous for watching sunset and taking a camel ride.

Jaisalmer City Guide | India Travel Video in Rajasthan Transcript:
After an 18 hour overnight train ride from Delhi, we finally reached Jaisalmer, a city of yellow sandstone that lies in the middle of the Thar Desert. This proved to be my favourite stop of our month long adventure in India; now let me take you on a tour and show you why.
With so much colour all around us, it wasn’t long before we were lured into a shop and found ourselves picking out souvenirs in the form of wall hangings, pillow cases, and a small painting or two. Our luggage gained an extra couple of pounds in this city alone.
But it wasn’t all shopping in Jaisalmer. We also made time to do a bit of sightseeing inside the fort, and one of the main attractions here are the Jain Temples.
Another thing we’d recommend doing in Jaisalmer is having dinner on a rooftop restaurant while the sun sets. There are plenty of restaurants scattered across the city and the views you get as the sun goes down are amazing. We chose one at random and it included a live music performance.
The following day was all about visiting the Thar Desert on an afternoon camel trek. It was a nice change of pace from the city, and we got to enjoy a traditional meal cooked over a campfire.
The next morning we went back to the fort because we just couldn’t stay away. I visited the Jaisalmer Fort Palace Museum & Heritage Center, while Sam and his mom picked up a few additional gifts for family back home.
This is part of our Travel in India video series showcasing Indian food, Indian culture and Indian cuisine.
