Nasi Goreng and Durian: Indonesian Street Food Tour at Mangga Besar, Jakarta, Indonesia!
Check out my Nasi Goreng blog post here ►
Mangga Besar is a small area of Jakarta that’s known for its street life and for its bounty of all kinds of street food. My wife and I were staying in the Mangga Besar area, and we headed out onto the street one evening to eat a plate of nasi goreng.
When I was a kid I used to love fried rice. Now, I don’t eat fried rice all that often, but occasionally it does really sound good. You’ll find street food carts selling nasi goreng all over Indonesia and there are many different variations of fried rice that you can order. When I saw the petai (stink beans) hanging from the cart, I knew I immediately needed to order nasi goreng petai, or Indonesian style fried rice with stink beans.
He first added in some oil and a little dab of margarine to the wok, before tossing in a few ingredients. Then in went the rice, and he fried it up expertly along with a few seasoning, including the signature to nasi goreng, kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) to give it the Indonesian fried rice touch. It was a nicely satisfying plate of nasi goreng, and it wouldn’t have been the same without the addition of the stink beans.
Mangga Besar is also one of the most well known areas of Jakarta for durian, and as soon as it becomes evening, an abundance of stalls that sell durian, especially from Medan and Palembang, will set up. Right next to the nasi goreng stall that I ate at, there was a durian stall, and so the natural thing to do was go next door for a durian dessert. We ended up choosing a medium sized Palemnbang durian. When it comes to dessert, nothing can compare a good durian!
Mangga Besar - Jakarta, Indonesia
Nasi goreng petai - 20,000 IDR ($1.50)
Durian - 65,000 IDR ($4.88)

Jakarta Street Food - BEST BBQ in Indonesia - BEST Street Food in Indonesia 2018
Four Days in Jakarta
Our honeymoon was fantastic. We spent our time in Indonesia, and while we were on our own in Jogjakarta and Bali, we were fortunate to have locals to guide us around. After arriving, we promptly headed into the mountains to explore a volcano, but upon returning, it was time to explore Jakarta, the nation's capital.
One might think that there's nothing to do, but you'd be wrong. In the morning we headed off to National Monument. Due to it being a public holiday, we couldn't get tickets to go up the spire, but the scenery around the place was fantastic.
From there we went to the National Museum of Indonesia. It was closed, but a few thousand Rupiah greased some wheels and we were able to go inside. True to form, it included artifacts from the entire archipelago. Not only that, the exhibit included examples of local cultures.
Then it was off to Masjid Istiqlal, the largest mosque in South-east Asia. it happens to have been designed by a Christian... and right across the street is the Catholic Cathedral of Jakarta.
Our day then took us to Mangga Dua for discount shopping. You can't believe the deals here.
The highlight of the trip was authentic ox tail soup on Mangga Besar. The place with the green sign: Sop Buntut! The meal was fantastic, and if you're in the area, make sure you stop by!
Our last stops in Jakarta were at Sea World to go SCUBA diving in the main tank with all the fish and Taman Safari. I love diving. It was Jo's first time and she pulled through like the amazing woman that she is. Taman Safari is a wild animal park. The drive through the paddocks was a blast, but not as fun as holding the baby animals.
As always, thanks for watching. Music, used with permission from Jason Shaw.

TOP 13 MUST TRY FOOD IN JAKARTA INDONESIA
Having lived in Melbourne for quite some time now, these are the food that we miss from Indonesia. So whenever we go back to Jakarta, we always try to have these:
13. Bakso (Beef Meatballs)
Commonly sold as street food, bakso is a beef meatballs soup usually paired with rice vermicelli and/or yellow noodles. Don't forget to add the condiments, esp. the chili and the fried shallot.
12. Bakmi
The halal version comes with chicken. The non-halal is with pork. You can find this anywhere in Jakarta. So many noodles, so many varieties, so many different chilies and so many different soups to go with. Our tip is to ask a local and find a bakmi place close to where you're staying.
11. Nasi Padang
Enough said. This famous type of cuisine from Padang, West Sumatra is a feast. Literally. For your eyes and stomach. When you sit at the table, you will be given 10-20 dishes you can choose from. Pay what you touch/take. So don't get overwhelm. Out tip is to get the beef rendang, ayam pop, fish head curry, and the cassava leaves stew.
10. Bubur Ayam (Chicken Rice Porridge/Congee)
Typically a breakfast dish but can be had as a late night meal as well. The congee comes with shredded chicken, fried soybean, soy sauce, chicken stock, fried shallot and krupuk (crackers). Chili is optional:)
9. Sate
Where to start? Sate ayam (chicken), sate kambing ( lamb), sate padang.....All good. Sate ayam usually served with peanut chili sauce, sate kambing with kecap manis, shallot and chili mix while sate padang is a beef/organ satay topped with thick gravy.
8. Ayam Goreng (Fried Chicken) and Sayur Asem (Vegetables Sweet and Sour Soup)
You may say, it's only fried chicken. But what makes it different in Jakarta is the sambal a.k.a chili. One place is different than the other. Have it with rice and sayur asem. Great combo!
7. Gado Gado
Steamed vegetables salad with peanut sauce doesn't sound appetizing, does it? But wait until you try it. If you got a chance, watch how they make it. In a big mortal and pestle, they crush the fried peanuts with salt (and chili if you like) then add tamarind water until it comes a thick sauce. Vegetables are added, usually consist of kangkung, beansprout, cabbage, cucumber and tofu. Mix it through and add a few slices of hard boiled egg, fried shallot and krupuk/crackers. Enjoy.
6. Soto
Very difficult to find good soto outside Indonesia so this is definitely a must. Soto Betawi is beef and/or offal in a creamy soup. Soto Ayam is chicken in a light chicken stock with spices. Eat soto with steam rice and pickles provided. They will balance everything out.
5. Seafood
Jakarta is a city by the sea so seafood is abundant and affordable. A typical seafood restaurant usually have everything from fish, crab, and prawn to squid. So go pick what you like and cook it the way you like it. Our favorite is Crab with Spicy Padang Sauce, Fried Squid, Steamed Shrimps, Grilled Fish and Prawns and Stir fry Kangkung (Morning Glory). Don't forget the rice and the sambal.
4. Sop Buntut (Oxtail Soup)
Imagine a tender meat falling off the bone in a aromatic beef soup. That's what oxtail soup is. Forget the carrot:) Just have it with rice and pour a little bit of kecap manis and sambal. Heaven.
3. Rujak Pengantin
Old school Jakarta food. This salad dish usually consists of boiled potato, cabbage, lettuce, cucumber, hard boiled egg, tofu, pineapple and emping ( crackers with from melinjo nuts). Sweet. Sour. Sensation.
2. Tahu Telor
Another old school food from Jakarta. A simple dish but oh my...so tasty. Basically, it's an omelette with tofu filling. It's crispy around the edges and has soft texture inside. Served with kecap manis and fried peanuts. Never gets old.
1. Martabak
There are 2 varieties, savory and sweet.
The savory one is martabak telor, which is a pan fried crispy pancake filled with beef, spring onion and eggs.
The sweet one is martabak manis. Layers of butter, chocolate sprinkles, fresh grated cheese, a drizzle of condensed milk and peanut and sesame seeds are added on top of crumpet-like pancake. Fold it and add another butter/margarine. Cut it in cubes. The ultimate guilty pleasure.
If you only have a chance to eat one dish in Jakarta, THIS IS IT.
Martabak Manis. Remember that. Forget your diet. You only live once:)

Indonesian Street Food Tour of Glodok (Chinatown) in Jakarta - DELICIOUS Indonesia Food!
►Check out 50 of the Best Indonesian Dishes:
Glodok is the Chinatown of Jakarta, and my wife and I decided to spend the day walking around Glodok and exploring some Indonesian street food throughout the day. At the end of the day, we also stopped by Fatahillah Square, with is an old Dutch square in colonial Jakarta, where you'll find some interesting buildings and some street food snacks as well.
Since we were staying at a hotel (here’s information on the hotel I stayed at: not too far from Glodok, we decided to beat the traffic and just walk over there. It didn’t take more than 15 minutes to walk, and soon we arrived in Jakarta’s Chinatown. Glodok is a very interesting area to walk around and explore. There are fresh markets and plenty of restaurants and food to choose from.
The Indonesian street food I tried on this tour was siomay, an Indonesian Chinese dish. From the back of a motorbike, I chose a few of the siomay dumplings he had steaming, and the cut them up and added some peanut sauce to the plate. The texture was a little mushy, but they were alright. Right opposite the siomay, the owner of an Indonesian vegetarian restaurant greeted me and asked if I might like to eat some of his vegetarian food. His vegetarian rendang was particularly good.
One of the most famous places to go in Glodok is Kopi Es Tak Kie, a legendary coffee shop. After wandering around a while we found it. I had a cup of coffee and also a plate of nasi campur from outside the shop.
We continued on our Indonesian street food tour throughout Glodok and I tried a sweet snack called kue ape, which is a green colored little pancake. Next, I had a variety of deep fried snacks including fried bananas, and fried breadfruit. They are definitely pretty greasy, but interesting to sample, and they are very popular street food snacks in Indonesia.
It probably wasn’t the greatest idea to walk, but we decided to walk over to Fatahillah Square. The traffic was pretty intense, but we made it. And along with checking out the old colonial buildings one of my main goals was to try kerak telor, which is a traditional Indonesian Betawi street food snack. Luckily I found it and it turned out to be a very interesting and amazing snack to watch being made!
Here’s the list of the things we ate and the prices:
Siomay - 15,000 IDR ($1.11)
Vegetarian food - 20,000 IDR ($1.48)
Kopi Es Tak Kie - 10,000 IDR ($0.73)
Nasi campur - 35,000 IDR ($2.58)
Kue ape - 1,000 IDR ($0.07) each
Fried snacks - 12,000 ($0.88)
Kerak telor - 20,000 IDR ($1.48) - Possibly overcharged? Do you think?
Hope you enjoyed the Indonesian street food tour of Glodok and Fatahillah Square, I sure enjoyed eating it!
