Pure Michigan Fall In Manistee Town and Lighthouse 4K Drone Footage
The Manistee Pierhead lights are a pair of active aids to navigation located on the north and south pier in the harbor of Manistee, Michigan, Lake Michigan’s Victorian Port City.
History
The first light was on the south pier in 1870. Unfortunately, it burnt in the Great fire of 1871, October 8, 1871, along with the town of Manistee.[3][4] Coincidentally, Manistee burnt on the same day as the Great Chicago Fire, Peshtigo Fire in Wisconsin, and fires in Port Huron and Holland, Michigan.[5]
Two lighthouses were built, one on each pier in 1875. Over the years the lights have been moved several times, including moves to and from the mainland, and to and from the south to the north pier. Lights have been torn down and rebuilt.
The current tower is located on the north pier. It is constructed of cast iron, and was first listed in 1927. The tower is a white cylinder, and the keepers house is separate. The original lens was a Fifth Order Fresnel lens.[6] The tower has also been rebuilt as the pier has been extended. Other changes have involved the placement and configuration of the fog horn.[2] The present tower is 39 feet (12 m) tall. The catwalk is one of only four that survive in the State of Michigan.[7] National Register of Historic Places, Reference # 90000718 The tower is capped with a ten-sided steel lantern. The light uses a 5,000 candlepower incandescent electric bulb, and has a flashing mechanism which displays a group occulting white light over 30 seconds. Its focal plane is 55 feet (17 m), and is visible for 12 nautical miles (22 km; 14 mi) in clear weather. The Type C diaphone is powered by an electric compressor housed in the tower, and emits a group of three blasts every 30 seconds.[2] There is also a radio beacon.[8]
The northern pier light is located on the same side of the river as the Manistee Coast Guard station, and within shouting distance of the Manistee South pier light.[4]
The south pier has a 37-foot (11 m) steel tower navigational aid. This was constructed when the lighthouse was moved to the north pier in 1927
Manistee Pierhead Light was put up for sale under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act in 2009.[9] On June 30, 2011, ownership of the light was transferred to the City of Manistee. The Manistee County Historical Museum will maintain the light.

RV Travel: Manistee, Michigan - the town we fell in love with
Come check out awesome Manistee, Michigan. A quiet little town on the shore of Lake Michigan that we fell in love with. It truly is a beautiful and quiet town. We stayed at the Little River Casino RV Park, just north of town. Freighters travel from Lake Michigan down the Manistee River through town. There are two draw bridges that they have to pass through before reaching Manistee Lake, where Morton Salt is located. We didn't get to see any ships while we were there, but we have seen photos and videos online and it's a sight to see as they meander down the narrow river. There is even a Facebook group called Manistee Ship Watch where they keep up with all the info of the ships, when they arrive, depart, and even post pictures. Go check it out!

Manistee deputy chokes and allegedly fractures leg of protester
Shaun Carpenter, a Manistee County man, was arrested while protesting on a Manistee public sidewalk in 2017.
According to Jonathan R. Marko, a civil rights attorney at Ernst & Marko Law -
The incident took place while Shaun Carpenter was exercising his constitutional right to peacefully protest and was picketing various government actions on a public sidewalk. As Mr. Carpenter was exercising his right to speak freely and protest, he was approached by Manistee County Sheriff Deputy Fitch who told Mr. Carpenter that he was not allowed to exercise his free speech if anyone complained. Deputy Fitch told Mr. Carpenter and told him that if someone did not like what Mr. Carpenter was saying then he was violating the law.
Mr. Carpenter knew he had done nothing wrong and informed Deputy Fitch of the same. Deputy Fitch, angry that he had no authority to silence Mr. Carpenter's constitutionally protected speech, demanded Mr. Carpenter's name and identification. Mr. Carpenter explained to the police officer that he would not give his name and was not required by law to give his name since he had violated no laws and was not suspected of violating any laws. Deputy Fitch then lied to Mr. Carpenter and told him he was required by law to identify himself and that he would be arrested if he refused. Mr. Carpenter continued to protect his freedoms and refused to give the Deputy his ID.
Enraged, Deputy Fitch slammed Mr. Carpenter into a wall, started rifling through his backpack, and pinned him against the wall by his throat. Deputy Fitch then spun Mr. Carpenter around and, in an action movie-like display, kicked in Mr. Carpenter's knee and took him to the ground. Although Mr. Carpenter never once resisted, Deputy Fitch kicked Mr. Carpenter so hard that he fractured and cracked Mr. Carpenter's tibia.

Must see Holland Big Red Lighthouse 4K Drone footage after Polar Vortex Pure Michigan
The Holland Harbor Lighthouse is an integral part of the history of Holland. A stormy history it is filled with disappointment countered by determination. Soon after the Dutch settlers came to the area in 1847, their leader, Dr. Albertus C. Van Raalte, wrote to the governor and the U.S. Congress requesting funds for the building of a harbor. Van Raalte knew from the beginning that if this new community were to flourish, access to Lake Michigan, to and from Black Lake, (now Lake Macatawa) was essential. However, the entrance to the lake from Lake Michigan was blocked with sandbars and silt.
Repeated requests for government help were made in the years that followed but to no avail. All the while, the Holland settlers made numerous attempts to establish a harbor. A permanent pier was built into Lake Michigan that was battered year after year by winter storms. Dredging was done both by hand and machine.
In 1860, citizens managed to cut a new channel-present location from Lake Macatawa to Lake Michigan. It was deep enough for barges to float from Lake Michigan into Lake Macatawa.
In 1866, harbor officials received word from Congress that they would receive an appropriation for work on the harbor.
In 1867, the Federal Government took over improvement of the harbor. Additional monies came in 1870, 1871 and 1872 but it was not until the turn of the century, fifty years after the effort was begun, that the harbor was substantially completed. It was too late for Holland to become an important commercial port, but not too late to help foster a thriving resort business. The Graham and Morton shipping lines made two trips daily from Chicago bringing eager vacationers to the lakeshore.
In 1893, a Life Saving Station opened on Lake Michigan. Ten years later it was replaced by a U.S. Coast Guard Station.
The first lighthouse was erected with $4,000 of federal funds in 1870, twenty years before the harbor was complete. It was a small, square, wooden structure that stood on an open platform on legs above the deck of the pier. On top was a lantern deck with a ten-window lantern room.
The lighthouse keeper had to carry his lighted oil lamp along a catwalk, which stretched from the shore where he lived to the lamp under a lens or magnifying device. When fog obscured the light, he signaled incoming boats by blowing an 18 inch fish horn often used on sailboats.

Polar Vortex Frozen 4K Footage of South Haven Lighthouse Must see! Pure Michigan Travel
Pure Michigan The Day after the Polar Vortex ,The South Haven South Pierhead Light is a lighthouse in Michigan, at the entrance to the Black River on Lake Michigan. The station was lit in 1872, and is still operational. The tower is a shortened version of the Muskegon South Pierhead Light, and replaced an 1872 wooden tower. The catwalk is original and still links the tower to shore: it is one of only four that survive in the State of Michigan.
History
The keeper’s house is on shore, 2-1⁄2 stories stall, wood with a hipped-roof. It was also built in 1872, and is located at 91 Michigan Avenue onshore, was transferred to the city for preservation in 2000. The Michigan Maritime Museum has renovated the keeper’s house as the Marialyce Canonie Great Lakes Research Library.
lightkeepershouse
A Fifth order Fresnel lens manufactured by Parisian glass makers Barbier and Fenestre was installed in the lantern.
The current tower was designed by Eleventh District engineer James G. Warren.
The U.S. Lighthouse Service elected to tear down the wooden lighthouse and replace it. On October 6, 1903 ten workers arrived on the USLHS tender Hyacinth and began the project. It took a little more than a month to complete the project. According to The Daily Tribune (October 14, 1903) the lantern room was brought from Muskegon, Michigan where it had spent forty years on duty.
In 1913, the location was deemed unsatisfactory, and the cast iron lighthouse was moved 425 feet (130 m) to the end of the pie.
NEW STEEL LIGHTHOUSE COMMENCED TO-DAY
A crew of ten men in the employ of the Light House service, arrived this morning, from Muskegon, via the Pere Marquette and have begun work on the foundation of the new steel light house.
The Work is under the direction of Edward Guest, superintendent of the Ninth District, and the men cannot say when the work will be completed.
A concrete foundation will be built from the water’s edge, and the stone is being thrown out for that purpose. The foundation will be the size of the present one, which is about twelve feet square, or a little more. It will require about two weeks time after which the men will do some work at Holland then return to complete the steel tower. It will probably be completed in four or five weeks.
The new tower will be the same height about 36 feet from the water.
The Daily Tribune – October 6, 1903
With a new lighthouse we will have more light on the subject.
