Columbus City Council Meeting Highlights:
• RECOGNIZING SOMALI INDEPENDENCE DAY: Council President Shannon Hardin is presenting resolution 0201X-2019 to Recognize and Celebrate July 1st, 2019 as Somali Independence Day in the City of Columbus.
• LEVERAGING PRIVATE INVESTMENT TO CREATE A NEW COMMUNITY SPORTS PARK: Council President Pro Tem Elizabeth Brown, chair of the Recreation and Parks Committee is sponsoring ordinance 1730-2019 to authorize the Development Director, on behalf of the City, to enter into a Development Agreement with Franklin County and Crew SC Stadium Company, LLC, regarding the redevelopment of the MAPFRE Stadium site into a new Community Sports Park and the development, construction, and operation of a new downtown Crew stadium. Public dollars will leverage a $140 million private investment in the construction of a new stadium by investing $50 million in the Sports Park and public infrastructure at the site of the new stadium and mixed-use development project.
• INSTALLING NEW SIDEWALKS FOR SCHOOL ROUTE SAFETY: Councilmember Shayla Favor, chair of the Public Service and Transportation Committee, is sponsoring ordinance 1662-2019, to authorize the Director of Public Service to execute agreements with the Ohio Department of Transportation relative to the Pedestrian Safety Improvements-SRTS Sidewalks-McGuffey and Duxberry project. This project supports the installation of sidewalks through the Safe Routes to School program which aims to improve the safety and mobility of children by encouraging them to walk and bike to school.
• INSTALLING STREETLIGHTS IN LINDEN: Councilmember Rob Dorans, chair of the Public Utilities Committee is sponsoring ordinance 1823-2019 to fund upgrades of underground utility infrastructure and the installation of 78 street lights in North Linden. The lights will be installed on Cleveland Avenue from Weber to Dunedin Road.
• AWARDING A GRANT TO ALL PEOPLE’S FRESH MARKET: Councilmember Priscilla Tyson, chair of the Health and Human Services Committee is sponsoring ordinance 1711-2019 to authorize the Board of Health to enter into a $20,000 grant agreement with Community Development for All People to support All People’s Fresh Market. Community Development for All People (CD4AP) opened the All People's Fresh Market in 2014 and reopened in its new location in March of 2018. CD4AP responded to the community’s desire for access to fresh fruit and vegetables by opening this new Fresh Market. Families, at no cost to them, can get a basket of fresh, non-processed foods including fruits, veggies, meat, bread and dairy items every day the market is open. Increasing access to fresh wholesome produce is one powerful way to impact the health of families and help them stretch their food budgets.
• ADVANCING ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: Councilmember Emmanuel V. Remy, chair of the Economic Development committee is sponsoring ordinance 1595-2019 to authorize the Director of Development to enter into contract with Columbus Next Generation Corporation in an amount up to $4,350,000 for the purpose of purchasing, renovating or constructing real property assets in targeted central city areas to advance economic and community development initiatives. Columbus Next Generation Corporation was formed with the purpose of identifying underutilized property in core neighborhoods that have the potential to thrive for future commercial development.
• HONORING DR. DAVID KESEG: Councilmember Mitchell J. Brown is sponsoring resolution 0202x-2019 to honor the career of Dr. David P. Keseg, who is retiring after 32 years of Distinguished Service with the Columbus Division of Fire.
