President Donald Trump gave Bible literacy legislation a shout-out on Monday with a tweet praising states that are “starting to make a turn back” to an unspecified time when public schools apparently relished in Bible study.
As The Washington Post’s Mark Chancy noted, there was no such time in American history.
And as Trump’s former pastor noted, in any case, the president can’t exactly speak with much authority on the subject.
Pastor David Lewicki responded to Trump’s tweet on Tuesday morning, explaining how he served as a pastor at New York City’s Marble Collegiate Church for about five years in the mid-aughts.
Despite being on the member rolls, Trump never showed. Not to Bible study ― and not even to a service, according to Lewicki.

The Power of Positive Thinking is a self-help book by Norman Vincent Peale, originally published in 1952. It proposes the method of Positive Thinking. It basically aims at ensuring that the reader achieves a permanent constructive and optimistic attitude through constant positive influence of his conscious thought (e.g. by using affirmations or visualizations) and consequently achieves a higher satisfaction and quality of life.
Norman Vincent Peale (May 31, 1898 – December 24, 1993) was an American minister and author known for his work in popularizing the concept of positive thinking, especially through his best-selling book The Power of Positive Thinking. He served as the pastor of Marble Collegiate Church, New York, from 1932 until his death, leading a Reformed Church in America congregation. Peale was a personal friend of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, and two other presidents, Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, have praised his teachings.
Peale was politically and personally close to President Richard Nixon's family. In 1968 he officiated at the wedding of Julie Nixon and David Eisenhower. He continued calling at the White House throughout the Watergate crisis, saying Christ didn't shy away from people in trouble.
Peale was also a 33° Scottish Rite Freemason.[11]
He died of a stroke on December 24, 1993 at age 95 in Pawling, New York.
As a child, Donald Trump attended Marble Collegiate Church with his parents, Fred and Mary. Both he and his two sisters were married there. Trump has repeatedly praised Peale and cited him as a formative influence.[35]

The Marble Collegiate Church, founded in 1628, is one of the oldest continuous Protestant congregations in North America.
The church congregation was founded in 1628 as the Collegiate Reformed Protestant Dutch Church and was affiliated with the Dutch Reformed Church, a Calvinist church in the Netherlands.
Norman Vincent Peale, the noted author of The Power of Positive Thinking, served as senior minister from 1932 to 1984. Under his ministry Marble's influence reached national levels and became known as America's Hometown Church.
During his successful 2015–16 run for the Republican Party's presidential nomination, President Donald Trump told a 2015 South Carolina campaign audience that he attends Marble Collegiate Church. The church is where he was married by Dr. Peale to his first wife, Ivana Trump, in 1977. In 1993, Marble's Minister Dr. Arthur Caliandro, performed Trump's marriage to Marla Maples in the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel owned at the time by Trump.

The foundation was investigated numerous times due to Donald Trump’s alleged uncharitableness; he stated that he had donated millions of dollars to various organizations, but proof from numerous examinations only presented half of what Trump had noted. President Trump was also accused of using funds from the Trump Foundation to promote his campaign during his run for office. The press also released statements declaring that Donald Trump lied about making donations to the Twin Towers Fund, New York City Public/Private Initiatives, Inc., or the American Red Cross; there were no records of the donations although they could’ve been granted personally. There are also several accounts of Trump using money from the foundation to pay for various personal things, such as paintings of himself.
13. New Jersey Generals -
Donald J. Trump has been part of an array of groups and events throughout his long career. In late 1983, he bought the New Jersey Generals, a team that played for the United States Football League; he purchased the team from J. Walter Duncan. The team’s colors were white, blue, scarlet, and gold and their logo was a five-star wreath representative of a general’s rank in the military. Unfortunately, they had to close up shop because of monetary complications. However, Donald Trump’s interest in sports remained, and he continued to fund and host numerous athletic events throughout his business career. The Tour de Trump cycling race was named after him as well, before becoming the Tour DuPont. Donald Trump also managed golf courses in several countries, including Scotland, Indonesia, and the United States.
Rural and Migrant Ministry lobbying
Rural and Migrant Ministry (RMM) began to aggressively lobby to change NYS labor laws in connection to agricultural labor soon after Richard Witt was hired to be the Executive Director in 1991. In the first brief portion of this video, taken from a documentary that appeared on RNN back in September 26, 1996, you hear Witt take credit for state legislation passed in 1996 pertaining to drinking water in the fields. Witt in fact states after three years of working for this his organization got the legislation passed. (By the way, Federal law under OSHA already required farmers to provide drinking water in the fields. The state law merely duplicated what federal law already required.) The next two brief snippets of this video are taken from a documentary produced in 2000 by an Episcopal priest named John E. Denaro entitled WE GATHER: Ministry and Advocacy with Farmworkers. In the first portion you will see the list of 3 separate pieces of state labor law legislation RMM successfully lobbied the passage for, all prior to 2000. You then see a number of church people take part in 2000 in RMM's annual Farmworker Advocacy Day. The day consists of a rally and legislative lobbying visits. According to RMM's website this annual lobby day had been going on since 1995 ( ). I point this out because prior to RMM's 2001 990 tax filing the organization claimed they did not lobby at all (I have returns from 1996 forward but it is safe to assume they claimed this prior to 1996 as well). Why did they suddenly claim to the IRS they were lobbying, starting in their 2001 filing, when they were obviously lobbying and didn't claim it beforehand? From late 2001 through early 2002 RMM was investigated by the NYS Lobby Commission for significant lobby law violations. They were fined and forced to register as lobbyists. Further, in their settlement agreement with the Lobby Commission they agreed to this statement: whereas, it is clearly established that Richard Witt, Jr. and the Mid-Hudson Rural and Migrant Ministry, Inc., failed to file timely and/or accurate report(s) as a lobbyist and client in New York State for the years 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002.... This is a tacit admission they lobbied and incurred lobbying expenses from 1999 forward. They obviously were lobbying and had expenses prior to 1999 but prior to 1999 was beyond the scope of the investigation. Starting with their 2003 990 filing RMM began filing as an electing public charity. In statement 7 of their 2003 return regarding the 501(H) election RMM clearly and unequivocally states: 2001 WAS THE FIRST YEAR OF THE ORGANIZATIONS 501 (H) ELECTION. THERE WERE NO LOBBYING EXPENSES PRIOR TO 2001.
Why is this all important? Because for an organization classified as a 501(c)3 by the IRS, which RMM is, it cannot engage in lobbying beyond a substantial part of its overall activities. The fact is, by Witt's own admission in the video and on RMM's website, as well as in other written materials produced by them and in media stories they appeared in at the time, Witt and RMM had been engaging in lobbying activities as early as 1993. The video shows their elaborate lobby day held in 2000. Yet from 1996 to 2000 they claimed they didn't lobby at all to the IRS and in their 2003 return they actually made a definitive statement they incurred no lobbying expenses prior to 2001, despite the fact that in 2002 they acknowledged in a settlement agreement with the NYS Lobby Commission they had been lobbying and incurred lobbying expenses as far back as at least 1999. IF Witt and RMM were engaged in lobbying activities before they were forced to admit it on their 2001 return and did incur expenses prior to 2001 despite what they claimed on their 2003 tax return, then Witt and the organization, with the obvious support of the board of directors, has knowingly provided false information to the IRS over the years regarding lobbying. Tax documents are signed under penalties of perjury.
