Marciana Marina liegt auf der nordwestlichen Seite der Insel und ist wohl einer der landschaftlich schönsten Flecken der Insel. Von der Hafenmole aus sieht man die beiden Bergdörfer Poggio und Marciana Alta unterhalb des Monte Capanne am Hang liegen. Besonders vom Boot aus ist diese Panorama wirklich einzigartig! Es gibt in Marciana keinen Strand, der Touristen gleich auffallen würde, jedoch gibt es am linken Ende der Uferpromenade (Richtung Wasser blickend) einen kleinen Kiesstrand mit großen, teils eiförmigen Granitsteinen, von wo aus sich schöne Tauchgänge buchen lassen. Bezaubernd und ein häufiges Fotomotiv sind auch die Felsen und der Ortsteil am äußersten rechten Ende der Promenade. Marciana Marina è il più piccolo comune della toscana. Le sue origini risalgono al dodicesimo secolo con la costruzione della torre Pisana, detta anche torre saracena che serviva appunto a scopo di avvistamento contro le incursioni di Musetto, re dei saraceni. La parte antica della cittadina è quella detta del Cotone nella parte est del paese che conserva ancora il caratteristico aspetto di un antico borgo di pescatori.
L'anima del paese è la piazza della chiesa che durante l' estate ospita una ricca stagione culturale. In questi ultimi anni, infatti, sul palco, in una piazza gremita di folla, si sono alternati nomi famosi della politica, della cultura e dell' arte quali Enzo Biagi, Gio Pomodoro, Ferruccio De Bortoli,Maria Luisa Trussardi, il ministro Martino, Nava, Anna Corradini Porta, Fossa, Feltri, Unberto Veronesi . Particolarmente suggestivi i festeggiamenti in occasione di Santa chiara, patrona di Marciana Marina.

Every time I go back to Marciana Marina I am embraced by a multitude of pleasant emotions, but the one that fascinates me the most is the plenitude of panoramic views
Unfortunately, a lot of this glamour is of difficult perception, that’s why I feel compelled to provide a little bit of my creativity and leave an advice that I hope will be appreciated
The idea is the one of the “four views”
“The first view” cannot be anything but the one that welcomes you at the entrance of the gulf in the Victoria Plaza, a view that embraces the sea and the history of the place
On one side “Torre Saracena” known as “Torre degli Appiani”, on the other the access to “Borgo del Cotone”, and in between the sea with the touristic port
The ideal cue is the one of the info point
I thought about a tower shaped construction that would serve as a counterpoint to the historical tower
Created with the characteristic traits of the old boroughs and coated with the granite from Elba to emphasize the spirit of belonging to the land
A building with areas that serve as reference for tourists
In addition, its terrace constitutes a new and breathtaking panoramic view point, free from the inconvenience of parked vehicles and accessible through a broad staircase, but most of all by a ramp that embraces the tower, designed as well as an advantage for people with limited mobility
The tower at its height represents the starting point of the path of the four views and becomes a landmark for tourists and residents
Moving forward we get to the area of “Piazzale Bonanno”, a space located half way through the seafront
When I think about the town that renovates, the first thing that I want to suggest is the creation of a multifunctional and versatile complex, whose main function is the auditorium
A building with a front characterized by light and transparent forms, projected toward the sea, supported by granite pillars
A recipient suited to welcome shows, concerts, meetings, and able to transform into a grand hall for mundane and cultural events, like the Literature Prize “La Torre”
Even the area on the ground level is a multifunctional space, that converts from parking lot for the events to indoor market
An important attraction even during rainy days
The rooftop of the building, designed as lounge bar, equipped with a wide terrace becomes of course “the second view point” of the journey, that literally dominates the entire gulf
From the auditorium we continue on to “the third view point”, a catwalk on the sea.
This time the sight is captured by the immense beauty of the sea
By eliminating the parking area that obstructs the view of the port, the visual field is placed at sea level and continues all the way to the harbor office.
By day we enjoy the contact with the water and by night we are driven by a line of lights that represents the skyline of the house fronts on the way, in a series of emotions that will amaze the tourists
“The fourth view point” is another terrace
An element that brings to mind the idea of the ancient elevations, that goes perfectly with the architectural style of the old tower
Built in the vicinity of the harbor office with the purpose of concealing the old and anonymous harbor building without, however, altering it to insert new public restrooms and at the same time to expand the beach through the creation of a series of big steps that are positioned on the terrace as if they were rocks suited for laying down and sunbathing
The journey is now complete
I am sure that the four viewpoints will be attractive gathering sites on the night of Santa Chiara’s festival, to admire the spectacular fireworks of Marciana Marina

Isola d'Elba
L'Isola d'Elba è la maggiore dell'Arcipelago Toscano e la più estesa (223,52 km2) fra quelle italiane dopo la Sicilia e la Sardegna. Fa parte amministrativamente della prov. toscana di Livorno ed è situata nel Mar Tirreno sett., tra la Corsica e la Toscana, da cui dista una decina di chilometri e dalla quale è separata tramite il Canale di Piombino; ha forma all'incirca triangolare e sviluppa un perimetro di 118 km, con una lunghezza di 27 km e una larghezza massima di 18.
Prevalentemente montuosa, culmina a 1019 m nel m. Capanne. Le coste dell'Elba, in genere alte e rocciose, sono molto frastagliate e caratterizzate da numerose sporgenze e da profonde insenature, costituite dai golfi di Procchio, di Biodola e di Portoferraio a N, di Campo, di Lacona e della Stella a S, di Mola a E.
La struttura geologica è piuttosto complessa: la sezione occid. è costituita essenzialmente dalla vasta massa granitica del m. Capanne; nella sezione centr. prevalgono formazioni di rocce effusive, mentre in quella orient. sono diffusi le rocce calcaree e arenacee, i micascisti gneissici e gli scisti ardesiaci e carboniosi. Il clima è molto dolce con inverni miti ed estati relativamente fresche.
La popolazione dell'Isola d'Elba(29.274 ab.), distribuita negli otto comuni di Campo nell'Elba, Capolìveri, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Porto Azzurro, Portoferraio, Rio nell'Elba e Rio Marina, si dedica in prevalenza al turismo in continua espansione. Da tempo inattive sono le miniere di ferro (peraltro di modesta entità) di Rio nell'Elba, di Calamita e di altre località, situate tutte nel settore orient. dell'isola: il minerale veniva interamente esportato ed era lavorato negli altiforni di Piombino, Cornigliano Ligure (Genova) e Bagnoli (Napoli).
Occupata dapprima dai Liguri, poi dagli Etruschi di Populonia, che sfruttarono il ferro nelle loro fornaci, e quindi dai Siracusani (453 a. C.), divenuta romana (Ilva), fu adibita a base navale e vi fu intensificata l'estrazione del ferro. Possesso dei duchi longobardi della Marca Marittima Toscana, fu difesa dalle incursioni saracene e genovesi dai Pisani, finché dopo la battaglia della Meloria (1284), l' Isola d'Elba cadde in mano di Genova che nel 1309 però riconobbe il dominio di Pisa. Nel 1399 tutta l'isola entrò a far parte del Principato di Piombino, possesso degli Appiani (riconosciuto dall'imperatore Massimiliano soltanto nel 1502). Nel corso del sec. XVI subì più volte gli attacchi dei pirati turchi che la devastarono, specie con le incursioni comandate da Khayr ad-Din più noto come il Barbarossa (1534). Carlo V la vendette (1546) a Cosimo I de' Medici duca di Firenze, il quale per difenderla dai Turchi incrementò la costruzione di fortificazioni.
Disputata tra Borboni di Spagna e Asburgo durante la guerra di successione spagnola, venne occupata dagli Inglesi (1796), poi dai Francesi (1799) che con la Pace di Amiens (1802) se la aggiudicarono. Ritiro di Napoleone (dal maggio 1814 al marzo 1815) prima dei Cento Giorni, per il Trattato di Vienna fu unita al Ducato di Toscana fino al 1860, quando venne incorporata al Regno d'Italia.
Nell'isola esistono tracce di cultura neolitica della fase a ceramica impressa, ruderi di forni etruschi per la fusione dei metalli e vari resti di età romana, tra i quali i ruderi di una grande villa romana in opera reticolata in località Le Grotte a 10 km da Portoferraio.
