The Mardasson Memorial, dedicated to the American forces involved in the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944/45. The star shped memorial honours the memory of the 76,890 American soldiers who were wounded or killed during the Battle.
The video starts with a view from the top before moving down to see the various insciptions and finally moves out to see the crypt.

Het Mémorial du Mardasson (in het Engels Mardasson Memorial genoemd) is een oorlogsmonument ter nagedachtenis aan de Slag om de Ardennen en ligt op de Mardassonheuvel, ten noordoosten van de Belgische stad Bastenaken, destijds het middelpunt van de strijd.
Het Mémorial du Mardasson werd gerealiseerd op initiatief van de Belgisch-Amerikaanse Associatie, een vereniging die de nagedachtenis aan de vele hier gesneuvelde jonge Amerikanen wil eren. Het monument werd ingewijd op 16 juli 1950 en staat voor de duurzame vriendschap tussen het Belgische en het Amerikaanse volk, die schouder aan schouder vochten tijdens de overwinningsstrijd die zij voerden tijdens dit Ardennenoffensief in december '44 - januari '45 en de doorslaggevende rol die het bij de bevrijding van Bastenaken heeft gespeeld.
En ter nagedachtenis van het heldhaftige verzet van de Amerikaanse soldaten van het 101st Airborne Division. Ze werden tijdens het offensief omsingeld door Duitse troepen. Hun leider, generaal Anthony McAuliffe die zich moest overgeven, zou Nuts hebben geantwoord. Door deze weigering kon de Amerikaanse generaal Georg S. Patton jr. de stad ontzetten en zo de laatste Duitse poging verhinderen aan het westelijk front. Elk jaar herdenkt men het heldhaftig verzet tijdens de Marche du Souvenir en Memorial Day.
Het monument heeft de vorm van een vijfpuntige ster, het symbool van het Amerikaanse leger, met elk een vertakkingen van 31 meter lang. Het is ontworpen door de architect Georges Dedoyard om de herinnering aan de 76890 Amerikaanse soldaten die tijdens dit Ardennen Offensief om het leven kwamen of gewond of vermist raakten, levendig te houden. De diameter van het centrale atrium bedraagt 20 meter en heeft een hoogte van 12 meter.
Op de kroon van het gedenkteken staan in brons de namen van alle 48 Amerikaanse staten, Op de tien binnenste zuilen van de open galerij staat in het Engels met gouden letters de hele geschiedenis van deze bloedige Battle of the Bulge gegraveerd . Het verhaal van de slag waarbij 76.000 Amerikanen gewond zijn geraakt of gedood, eindigt met een boodschap: Zij die nu leven, kunnen de grootsheid van degenen die hier stierven en vochten alleen uiten met een toegenomen respect voor de vrijheid, waarvoor zij door het vuur gingen.
Op de buitenste zuilen de namen en individuele badges van de belangrijkste Amerikaanse bataljons die deelnamen aan deze strijd. De wandelgang op de top, te bereiken via een wenteltrap, levert een schitterend vergezicht op bijna alle verdedigingsstellingen die werden ingenomen tijdens het beleg van de stad. Aan de hand van oriëntatietafels is een beeld te vormen van het slagveld. Aan de voet van het gebouw is een crypte uitgegraven in de rotsen, versierd met prachtig gekleurde mozaïeken van de Franse kunstenaar Fernand Léger. Drie altaren zijn respectievelijk gewijd aan de katholieke, protestantse en joodse religies.

Le grand spectacle vivant son et lumière, qui a eu lieu en mai 2014 lors du Memorial Day, a attiré plus de 5.000 personnes !
Ce spectacle vivant était accompagné d’une projection sur le Monument du Mardasson et était présenté sous forme de tableaux thématiques et historiques qui retracaient la vie de cinq « Texas A&M Aggies » ainsi que les moments clés de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale et de la Bataille des Ardennes.

Het levendig klank-en lichtspel dat plaatsvond in mei 2014 ter gelegenheid van de Memorial Day werd bijgewoond door meer dan 5.000 personen!
Dit levendige spektakel bestond uit een projectie op het Mardasson Memorial en werd voorgesteld in de vorm van thematische en historische taferelen die het leven van 5 « Texas A&M Aggies » en de belangrijkste momenten van de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de Slag om de Ardennen vertelde.

The sound and light show that took place in May 2014 during the Memorial Day attracted more than 5.000 people!
This live show consisted of a projection on the Mardasson Monument and was presented in the form of subject-based and historical tableaux that recounted the lives of 5 « Texas A&M Aggies » and the key moments in the Second World War and the Battle of the Bulge.

-Look for the small area marked as D on the map to pull off to the left. There will probably be cars there. Park there, and walk north, where there are several foxholes.
*The Bastogne War Museum is very well done, and interactive. Very worth going to for anyone, not just history buffs.
*The Mardasson Memorial is just outside the Bastogne War Museum, so it's a great stop.
