Today we celebrate summer with our annual open-air fashion show in the heart of Helsinki. This year the event, arranged for the 27th time, celebrates equality in honour of the 50th anniversary of the iconic Tasaraita stripe.

Marimekko is a finnish fashion brand that introduced pioneering printed fabric patterns, created fashion shows to promote these patterns and gained worldwide presence and influence.
Veljekset installation at Lux Helsinki light festival 5–9.1.2017
Designer Maija Louekari created a new Marimekko pattern called Veljekset (brothers) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Finland´s independence. At Lux Helsinki, the Veljekset pattern will come to life in Maija Louekari's artwork, displayed on the wall of the Bank of Finland on Kirkkokatu street.
The Lux Helsinki light festival will illuminate the Helsinki city centre from 5 to 9 January 2017.

Vintage Finland Marimekko
Marimekko has made important contributions to fashion, especially in the 1960s, particularly through the work of designers such as Vuokko Nurmesniemi (renowned for the use of bold stripes), Maija Isola (who focused on large simple flowered prints) and Annika Rimala (strong and cheerful graphic patterns). Between them and the many other designers, the Marimekko business has created a portfolio of hundreds of distinctive patterns. This business played an instrumental role in the early recognition of fashion as an industrial art form, a point recognised by Finland's leading industrial designer Timo Sarpaneva, who invited the company to present a fashion show at the 1957 Triennale in Milan.

Armi Ratia founded her brand Marimekko in Helsinki, Finland, in 1951. “Armi had this vision of creating something that would inspire people to live a happier life,” says Sanna-Kaisa Niikko, Director of Global Brand Marketing at Marimekko. Ratia wanted to empower women to be active in their clothes, so she and a team of young designers developed abstract shapes in bold colors, designs that would pop on the a background of white canvas and free women from the constricting silhouettes of the time.
Today, nearly 70 years since Ratia started on her mission to improve lives with design, the Marimekko brand has expanded to men’s and children’s clothing, and homeware. Now everyone has the opportunity to add an element of Marimekko, bringing joy to everyday life.
