La Marina è uno dei quattro quartieri storici di Cagliari. I suoi confini sono delimitati a nord dalle mura del Castello, a sud dalla via Roma (oltre la quale si trova il porto), a est dal viale Regina Margherita e ad ovest dal largo Carlo Felice.
La Marina venne fondata dai pisani nel XIII secolo come zona destinata ad ospitare magazzini e dimore di quanti lavoravano presso il vicino porto di Cagliari. Denominato inizialmente come Lapola o La Pola (termine di significato incerto, il quale forse identificava una banchina o altra parte del porto e poi utilizzato per indicare l'intera area), il quartiere venne cinto da mura e bastioni, riammodernate in seguito dagli spagnoli e demolite a partire dalla seconda metà del XIX secolo per far posto ai tre importanti assi viari sopra citati.
Dal XIV secolo, con la dominazione aragonese prima e spagnola in seguito, Marina crebbe come numero di abitanti e assunse sempre di più la connotazione di quartiere vivamente trafficato e animato da commerci, dove per lo più dimoravano mercanti e pescatori, e in cui sorsero numerose comunità rappresentanti delle terre e città con cui vi erano più stretti rapporti commerciali (ad esempio si ricorda una comunità di siciliani, che faceva capo alla chiesa di Santa Rosalia e quella dei genovesi, facente capo alla chiesa dei Santi Giorgio e Caterina)

Cagliari is the capital city of the Italian island of Sardinia. It’s known for the hilltop Castello, a medieval walled quarter situated high over the rest of the town. Architectural highlights include the 13th-century Cagliari Cathedral. Housed in a former arsenal, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari displays bronze objects, Roman ceramics and artifacts from the Nuragic age to the Byzantine era.
An ancient city with a long history, Cagliari has seen the rule of several civilisations. Under the buildings of the modern city there is a continuous stratification attesting to human settlement over the course of some five thousand years, from the Neolithic to today. Historical sites include the prehistoric Domus de Janas, very damaged by cave activity, a large Carthaginian era necropolis, a Roman era amphitheatre, a Byzantine basilica, three Pisan-era towers and a strong system of fortification that made the town the core of Spanish Habsburg imperial power in the western Mediterranean Sea. Its natural resources have always been its sheltered harbour, the often powerfully fortified hill of Castel di Castro, the modern Casteddu, the salt from its lagoons, and, from the hinterland, wheat from the Campidano plain and silver and other ores from the Iglesiente mines.
Cagliari was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia from 1324 to 1848, when Turin became the formal capital of the kingdom (which in 1861 became the Kingdom of Italy). Today the city is a regional cultural, educational, political and artistic centre, known for its diverse Art Nouveau architecture and several monuments.
It is also Sardinia's economic and industrial hub, having one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean Sea, an international airport, and the 106th highest income level in Italy (among 8,092 comuni), comparable to that of several northern Italian cities. It is also the seat of the University of Cagliari, founded in 1607, and of the Primate Roman Catholic archdiocese of Sardinia, since the 5th century AD.
Forget flying: the best way to arrive in Sardinia’s historic capital is by sea, the city rising in a helter-skelter of golden-hued palazzi, domes and facades up to the rocky centrepiece, Il Castello. Although Tunisia is closer than Rome, Cagliari is the most Italian of Sardinia’s cities. Vespas buzz down tree-fringed boulevards and locals hang out at busy cafes tucked under arcades in the seafront Marina district.
Like many Italian cities, Cagliari wears its history on its sleeve and everywhere you go you come across traces of its rich past: ancient Roman ruins, museums filled with prehistoric artefacts, centuries-old churches and elegant palazzi. Edging east of town brings you to Poetto beach, the hub of summer life with its limpid blue waters and upbeat party scene.
Considerable remains of the ancient city of Karalis are still visible, including those of the Tuvixeddu necropolis, the Roman amphitheatre, traditionally called Is centu scalas (One hundred steps), and of an aqueduct used to provide generally scarce water. Still visible are also some ancient cisterns of vast extent, the ruins of a small circular temple, and numerous sepulchres on a hill outside the modern town that appear to have formed the necropolis of the ancient city. The amphitheatre stages open-air operas and concerts during the summer.
The Palaeo-Christian Basilica of San Saturnino, dedicated to a martyr killed under Diocletian's reign, Saturninus of Cagliari, patron saint of the city, was built in the 5th century. The old medieval town (called Castello in Italian, Casteddu de susu in Sardinian, the upper castle) lies on top of a hill with a view of the Gulf of Cagliari (also known as Angels' Gulf). Most of its city walls are intact and include two early 14th-century white limestone towers, the Torre di San Pancrazio and the Torre dell'Elefante, typical examples of Pisan military architecture.

La bellissima città di Cagliari è una delle tante sorprese che riserva il sud della Sardegna. Una città solare e vivace, ricca di storia, arte e cultura a pochi passi dal mare. La città, identificata dai suoi abitanti con il nome “Casteddu” ha una lunga storia segnata da un susseguirsi di insediamenti e dominazioni che hanno lasciato nel capoluogo sardo numerose tracce tuttora visibili. In questa guida vi proporremo cosa vedere a Cagliari: un’affascinate itinerario nel cuore antico della città, partendo dal quartiere Castello, fondato in epoca pisana, per ammirare scorci panoramici davvero spettacolari e gli angoli più suggestivi di questa meravigliosa città.Il centro storico di Cagliari è piuttosto raccolto e può essere visitato a piedi iniziando da Piazza Costituzione dove si erge l’imponente bastione di Saint Remy. Il bastione, costruito tra il 1899 e 1902 in pietra calcarea e granito bianco sulle basi degli antichi bastioni pisani e spagnoli, prende il nome dal primo viceré piemontese. Suggeriamo di salire sulla terrazza panoramica dedicata a Umberto I dal quale si può godere di una vista spettacolare sull’intera città e il suo porto sul Mediterraneo.Proseguendo il tour, nella parte alta del quartiere si entra nella Cittadella dei Musei, un polo culturale che comprende la Pinacoteca nazionale, il Museo archeologico e di arte orientale oltre alla Mostra delle cere anatomiche di Clemente Susini. Il quartiere di Castello domina sui tre quartieri storici di Cagliari. Oltrepassando la Porta Cristina, il primo che si raggiunge è Spampace che ancora oggi conserva il suo fascino originale e medioevale; viuzze strette e strade ciottolose si snodano tra le vie Santa Margerita e Ospedale, costeggiate da chiese di epoche diverse.In particolare ammirate San Michele, tra i maggiori esempi di barocco spagnolo costruita dai gesuiti nel 1600, insieme alla bellissima chiesa di Sant’Anna, ricostruita dopo i bombardamenti della seconda guerra mondiale, e la piccola chiesa di Sant’Efisio, dedicata al protettore di Cagliari. Interessante perché proprio da qui ogni anno, il 1° maggio, parte la famosa Sagra di Sant’Efisio, una processione tra le vie della città in cui sfilano numerosi costumi tradizionali provenienti da ogni angolo della Sardegna.Dalla via Roma inerpicandosi tra i vicoli si giunge al pittoresco quartiere della Marina, un rione multietnico ricco di botteghe artigiane, piccole oreficerie e tante trattorie dove gustare la deliziosa cucina tradizionale sarda. Se dopo un lungo giro volete fare una sosta, vi consigliamo la Piazza Yenne dominata dalla statua di Carlo Felice, cuore della movida di Cagliari, piena zeppa di bar, ristoranti e tavoli all’aperto dove bere, mangiare e divertirsi.
Spostandosi di pochi passi si raggiungono le due strade dello shopping, via Garibaldi e via Manno, affollate a qualsiasi ora del giorno. Tanti sono i negozi e boutique alla moda dove fare acquisti a Cagliari così come molti sono i ristoranti e le pizzerie nei dintorni per una piacevole cena. Ultimo ma non meno importante è il quartiere di Villanova, contraddistinto da numerose stradine caratteristiche, vecchie residenze nobiliari e luoghi piacevoli in cui rilassarsi all’aria aperta.Cosa fare a Cagliari? Non dimenticate di rilassarvi sulla Spiaggia del Poetto durante il vostro viaggio! È la più vicina alla città.
Potete prendere la vostra macchina per arrivarci, i parcheggi sono infatti disponibili lungo la spiaggia (più ci si avvicina all’inizio della spiaggia, più è probabile che si trovi un posto).
La vostra seconda opzione è quella di prendere l’autobus da Piazza Matteotti: vi ci porterà in pochi minuti.
La spiaggia del Poetto, con i suoi 7 km di estensione, è una delle spiagge più lunghe della Sardegna e dell’Italia. Troverete qui tutto ciò che vi serve per trascorrere una giornata in pieno relax: bar, ristoranti, venditori di ogni genere e beach club privati per noleggiare lettini e ombrelloni.
