Since January of this year, the West Coast of the United States has been experiencing an unprecedented amount of California sea lion strandings.
The world’s largest marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation facility, The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, California, is a nonprofit veterinary research hospital and educational center dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of ill and injured marine mammals, and has played a vital role in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of a large majority of these malnourished, dehydrated, and ill pups.
As a leading zoological facility focused on research and conservation, Georgia Aquarium was honored to recently have sent several animal care staff members to California to assist The Marine Mammal Center with caring for these little animals. Watch the video to hear more about the amazing and collaborative efforts being done for these stranded pups.

The Marine Mammal Center's mission is to expand knowledge about marine mammals — their health and that of their ocean environment — and to inspire their global conservation. Their core work is the rescue and rehabilitation of sick and injured marine mammals, supported by state-of-the-art animal care and research facilities, a corps of dedicated volunteers, and an engaged community.
Since 1975, their hospital facility has rescued and treated over 17,000 elephant seals, sea lions, whales, sea otters, harbor seals, fur seals, dolphins, harbor porpoises and more -- many from threatened and endangered species.

California Sea Lions Pups in Crisis
Veternarians and volunteers at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito are treating hundreds of rescued sea lion pups, By the hundreds, sick and dying sea lion pups are washing up on California shores. Scientists studying the phenomemon blame warmer coastal waters for forcing nursing mothers into deeper waters in search of food, often leaving their young stranded for days longer than normal. Gray Whale in the Klamath River, August 11, 2011
After approximately 54 days of fascinating scientists and tourists alike, the female gray whale that entered the Klamath River in late June has died.
Scientists from Humboldt State University reported yesterday afternoon that the whale's health was quickly deteriorating. Most noticeably, the whale began to breathe more frequently and appeared to have trouble swimming in an upright manner.
Finally, last night at approximately 7:00 p.m., scientists and a veterinarian watched helplessly as the whale stranded on a sandbar in the river, in about three feet of water, south of the U.S. Highway 101 bridge. Accompanied by scientists from HSU, and members of the Yurok Tribe, the whale passed away at about 4:30 a.m. this morning.
Veterinarians and researchers from The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, Calif., have arrived to assist with the necropsy that will be performed on the animal to hopefully gain some insight into what led to the whale's unusual foray into the freshwater river and what ultimately caused her death.
The female gray whale and its calf were first observed in the Klamath River on June 24th. The calf apparently weaned itself and returned to the ocean on July 23 leaving the mother behind. Attempts to move the adult whale out of the river back to the ocean using water spray, killer whale and gray whale sounds, banging of pipes and other methods were attempted but were unsuccessful.

Starving Sea Lions in California are treated and released back to the ocean
Due to warmer water along the coast of California, sea lions and seals have often been unable to get enough to eat. This hits young pups and their mothers especially hard. The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito is the largest marine hospital in the world and has worked heroically to save as many of these animals as possible.
Hooked on Marin - Discovering California Native Peoples
Hooked on Marin is a community based partnership comprised of Marin county public service agencies and educational districts collaborating to foster social, educational, and cultural enrichment opportunities in Marin.
This fall, we will be offering a series of four moderator-led events featuring a panel of people who have been or are involved in local, Marin-based topics.
These events will take place in October, November, and December of 2013 and January of 2014. A limited number of seats are available for each event and registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The gatherings will be limited to a certain number of registrants, so please sign-up early.

He also appeared in American Graffiti, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Nine Months. Terry teaches commercial and character voice, as well as scene and monologue acting, at his own Marin Actors' Workshop and at College of Marin.

Dead whale towed to Angel Island for necropsy
A dead whale is on its way to Angel Island -- towed across the Bay from the Oakland estuary, where it was discovered wedged under a bridge along the Embarcadero. The Marine Mammal Center says it's at least the fourth dead whale found in the bay this year.

The dead whale was found on Ocean Beach in San Francisco early Monday morning. Scientists will perform a necropsy on the animal Tuesday to determine the cause of death, according to The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, which has completed necropsies on eight beached gray whales in the region so far this year
