TTDC Maritime Heritage Museum - INS Vagli - near Mahabalipuram
INS Vagli, the decommissioned submarine, will be converted into Tamil Nadu Maritime Heritage Museum in Mamallapuram by March 2015, said Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam on Wednesday.
Speaking as the chief guest at a ceremony at which the Navy handed over INS Vagli to the State government, he said the submarine would be beached near the Mamallapuram Shore Temple by 2013 and converted into a museum by 2014.
On conversion, it will act as the centrepiece to attract domestic and foreign visitors and make youth take up a career in the Navy. Besides, the Chief Minister has also announced setting of an Oceanarium on East Coast Road at a cost of Rs.250 crore to provide more facilities to the tourists, he said.
While thanking the Indian Navy for towing the submarine from Visakhapatnam to Chennai Port free of cost, he requested the Navy to berth it at Mamallapuram at their cost as was done in the case of ex-submarine Kursura in Visakhapatnam.
Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, PVSM, AVSM Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, East Naval Command, formally handed over INS Vagli to Mr. Panneerselvam and said when commissioned the proposed museum would be second one in the country and would help students, academicians, historians and tourists understand the intricacies on board the life of mariners.
Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) will be the nodal agency for setting up the museum with exhibits on maritime heritage and marine technology and facilities such as food courts, audio-visual studio, souvenir shops and aquarium on Build, Own, Operate and Transfer model.
The submarine, which arrived on March 25, will be berthed in Chennai Port for three months and thereafter it would be towed to Mamallapuram for beaching it on a specially erected platform near the Shore Temple, said a TTDC official.

India Seashell Museum is the largest seashell museum in India and is located at Mahabalipuram, a famous tourist destination of South India, just 50 kms south of Chennai. It houses over 40,000 specimens of rare and unique seashells, fossils, shark teeth and whale fins which offers visitors an amazing visual treat and a unique perspective on conchology.
Mr.Raja Mohammed, a man with an imperishable will power, is a living example of a good old saying Dedicated passion can make amazing wonders.
India Seashell Museum is a personal initiative and vision of Mr. Raja Mohammed.
His passion for shells and extensive knowledge in the field, along with 33 years of untiring efforts and hard work bore fruit in the form of India's first ever seashell museum of this magnitude.
This opens a vista for the public as well as enthusiasts to experience first-hand, an amazing and rare private collection of seashells and other Molluscs.
Devoting 33 years of his life and his hard-earned money to this zeal has brought him unprecedented fame and recognition.
There was a glow of eternal happiness in his eyes as he stated,With the financial support of my maternal uncle,i have been successful in accumulating sea shells from small to large and from the ordinary to the exotic. My collection is from all parts of the world. I had to part with plots of family land to make long-held dream a reality. That was establish an exclusive sea shell museum.
His idea was to unearth marine treasure of the world and share the knowledge so gained with the rest of the world. His enthusiasm and vibrancy are astonishing. Words are inadequate to describe his bubbling interest in this rare field of work.
Born as a second in his family of four in Rameshwaram, a famous coastal town of Tamil Nadu,he loved taking a stroll on the beach along the edges of the water. His hunt for sea shell was propelled by those walks. When his peer group enjoyed the waves, he was busy collecting shells in the sand. His initial hobby grew into a much loved passion right from his teenage. His obsession became a full-fledged shell seeking spree due to the diversity and miraculous creation of shells and the incomparable identity of the collection.
It is absolutely captivating to know that a 53-year old fish merchant by profession with no formal education on the subject of Conchology has established the largest India Sea Shell Museum in Asia. On the 6th sep 2013,displaying more than 2000 various species of the mollusk family, a Museum was inaugurated in the historic town of Mahabalipuram. Needless to say this provides an added attraction to the thousands of visitors and tourists.
Continuous encouragement and support from a Professor of Anna University has been one of the long standing motivations in his perennial interest. His first enchanting tour was to Thailand manner in Sri Lanka in 1982.Then to Thailand in 1984 and Kenya in 1985. He had an extensive collection of 500 types of shells by 1985.Sea shells became more valuable when shared and compared with other collections. It is with this nucleus that he started the Museum. In fact, a Thai businessman too mooted the idea of sea shell museum.
With this intention, he travelled widely round the world to countries like the USA, Mexico, Australia, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc. The itinerary of his travels is as wide as his shell potpourri.
Despite getting drenched in the flood of appreciation from a wide range of admirers, his thirst for shells ceases to end.He still pines to add rare shells to his mass potpourri. He intends to advance his maiden venture to the forefront of an institution promoting marine biological studies. A giant leap in this aspect is his growing compendium of resources on Conchology which would later offer a plethora of opportunities for research.

J.jayalalitha dream project !! submarine museum & maritime history museum of Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu Minister for Tourism S.P. Shunmuganathan and Principal Secretary, Tourism, R. Kannan on visited the Kursura Submarine Museum on the Beach Road here. The visit was made to learn from the experience of setting up the submarine museum, the first of its kind in South Asia, as Tamil Nadu is also coming up with a submarine museum at Mahabalipuram. The Minister said the visit was made on the instructions of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.
Mr. Kannan said there would be two components at Mahabalipuram. One is the submarine museum, ex Vagli and another, maritime history museum of Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation had taken delivery of the decommissioned submarine and it was to be converted into a museum, Mr. Kannan said. “There is no point in reinventing the wheel and so we came to learn from the experience of establishing it in Visakhapatnam so that it can be done in a similar manner or even better,” he said.
He, however, did not indicate any timeframe but said it would be done very soon. On the maritime museum, he said an expert committee would suggest measures on how to go about it. The two later visited the National Maritime Museum on the Beach Road.
In charge officer of Kursura Submarine Museum Commander N. Rajesh and curator Phaniraj explained the history of the submarine and how it was hauled up the shore to make it a major tourist attraction in Visakhapatnam.
Secretary of VUDA G.C. Kishore Kumar, who accompanied the Minister and the official, said VUDA would share its experience with Tamil Nadu Government. VUDA maintains the submarine museum with technical support from the Eastern Naval Command.
The Kalvari class submarine was decommissioned in 2001 and was hauled up the shore in a joint venture between Indian Navy and National Ship Design Research Centre. The museum was inaugurated in 2002.
