Maritime museum, Kochi
The Maritime Museum in Kochi is an ode to the glorious past of the Indian Navy. Located on the INS Dronacharya, the museum throws light on the genesis, history, evolution and landmarks of the Indian Navy. The Navy’s origins in Surat along with features on shipbuilding are particularly popular attractions here. We also learn about Kerala's trade links with the Arabs, its maritime hero Kunjali Marakkar; influence of India's maritime power in South East Asia and the colonisation of the Indian sub-continent by European powers.

Indian Naval Maritime Museum in Fort Kochi
Indian Naval Maritime Museum is located in Fort Kochi about 2 kms from Fort Kochi Beach. It is managed by Indian Navy near INS Dronacharya. Entry ticket 40/- rs per head, still camera 100/-. Generally I don't enjoy museums as they all keep very similar outdated stuff. However, this museum was interesting with lot of war weapons, misiles, guns and above all a big helicopter. We took a lot of pictures in the museum and near the helicopter. It is one of the top 5 attractions in Fort Kochi and never miss it when you are going to Kerala.

Kochi (Cochin) - Queen of the Arabian Sea.Kochi tourist places
Kochi (also known as Cochin) is a city in southwest India's coastal Kerala state. It has been a port since 1341 when a flood carved out its harbor and opened it to Arab, Chinese and European merchants. Sites reflecting those influences include Fort Kochi, a settlement with tiled colonial bungalows and diverse houses of worship. Cantilevered Chinese fishing nets, typical of Kochi, have been in use for centuries.
St. Francis Church was the original site of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama’s burial when he died in Kochi in 1524. Santa Cruz Basilica is known for its pastel interior, including an imitation by Fra Antonio Moscheni of Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper. Paradesi Synagogue, founded in 1568, features imported Chinese blue-and-white ceramic floor tiles. The surrounding quarter, once home to a large Jewish community, is now filled with antique shops and old spice warehouses. Mattancherry Palace, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later renovated by the Dutch, showcases vivid Hindu murals.
Kerala is known as, God's Own Country, for its breath-taking beauty and the city of Kochi lies on the South West Coast overlooking the Arabian Sea. For centuries Kochi has been a gathering place for merchants and tourists from various nations and people who have been here from Arabs to the Portuguese and British have all left their legacy and cultural imprints behind. Mattancherry is a locality in the city of Kochi, India. It is about 9 km south-west from the city center. It is said that the name Mattancherry comes from Ancherry Mattom, a ''Namboodiri illam'' which the foreign traders then pronounced it as Matt-Ancherry, gradually became Mattancherry. The place where erstwhile 'Ancherry Mattom' located is now a Tamil Brahmin settlement.
The Palace was built and gifted by the Portuguese as a present to the king of Cochin around 1555. The Dutch carried out some extensions and renovations in the palace in 1663, and thereafter it was popularly called Dutch Palace. The rajas also made more improvements to it. Today, it is a portrait gallery of the Cochin Rajas and notable for some of the best mythological murals in India, which are in the best traditions of Hindu temple art. The palace was built to appease the king after they plundered a temple nearby.
The landing of Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer at Kappad in 1498 was welcomed by the Kochi rulers. They were given exclusive right to construct factories. The Portuguese repulsed the repeated attacks of the Zamorians and the Cochin Rajas practically became vassals of the Portuguese. The influence of the Portuguese were supplanted by the Dutch and they took over Mattancherry in 1663. Subsequently, the area was taken over by Hyder Aliand still later by the British East India Company
Paradesi Synagogue is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations, located in Kochi, Kerala, in South India. Constructed in 1567, it is one of seven synagogues of the Malabar Yehudan or Yehudan Mappila people or Cochin Jewish community in the Kingdom of Cochin.Paradesi is a word used in several Indian languages, and the literal meaning of the term is foreigners, applied to the synagogue because it was built by Sephardic or Spanish-speaking Jews, some of them from families exiled in Aleppo, Safed and other West Asian localities. It is also referred to as the Cochin Jewish Synagogue or the Mattancherry Synagogue
