Belgium: Ypres - Ieper
Ypres is a Belgian municipality located in the Flemish province of West Flanders.
Te town had long been fortified to keep out invaders. Parts of the early ramparts, dating from 1385, still survive near the Rijselpoort (Lille Gate). Over time, the earthworks were replaced by sturdier masonry and earth structures and a partial moat. Ypres was further fortified in the 17th and 18th centuries while under the occupation of the Habsburgs and the French. Major works were completed at the end of the 17th century by the French military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban.
During World War I, Ypres was the centre of intense and sustained battles between German and Allied forces. During the war, because it was hard to pronounce in English, British troops nicknamed the city Wipers.
Ypres occupied a strategic position during World War I because it stood in the path of Germany's planned sweep across the rest of Belgium and into France from the north (the Schlieffen Plan). The neutrality of Belgium was guaranteed by Britain; Germany's invasion of Belgium brought the British Empire into the war.
After the war the town was rebuilt using money paid by Germany in reparations, with the main square, including the Cloth Hall and town hall, being rebuilt as close to the original designs as possible. The Cloth Hall today is home to In Flanders Fields Museum, dedicated to Ypres's role in the First World War.The whole complex was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.
The Gothic-style Saint Martin's Cathedral, originally built in 1221, was also completely reconstructed after the war, but now with a higher spire.
The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Ypres commemorates those soldiers of the British Commonwealth -- with the exception of Newfoundland -- who fell in the Ypres Salient during the First World War before 16 August 1917, who have no known grave. The memorial now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men.
Every evening since 1928 (except for a period during the Second World War when Ypres was occupied by Germany), at precisely eight o'clock, traffic around the imposing arches of the Menin Gate Memorial has been stopped while the Last Post is sounded beneath the Gate by the local fire brigade. This tribute is given in honour of the memory of British Empire soldiers who fought and died there.

It was a very moving day for all concerned, to watch Family Members and Local Norfolk British Legion Branches who were proudly marching in the Parade with the Standard of their Branch.
Representatives laid Wreaths at The Menin Gate from British Legion Branches all over the British Isles, and many, who had travelled great distances from all corners of the World, to be part of this Historic day.
The day was made even more Special for one of our party (Peter) who's Daughter (who is a serving RAF Officer at R.A.F. Marham)and Her Partner were there to Represent the RBL.
This was made even more special, as she had no idea that her Dad had travelled specially to see her in the Parade !.
The playing of The Last Post with Poppy Petals falling from the roof of the Menin Gate was a moment every British person there were be proud to be a part of !.
Many a lump in the throat was there, of that I am sure, and many Old Comrades Chests ,proudly puffed out, with a smart salute held during the Last Post !
We later that day, Visited the Grave of a Resident of Spixworth, Norfolk of Coldstream Guardman H.G.V. Greenacre, who died fighting bravely for his Country on 26th March 1916 aged 24 years.
Our respects were paid to him at his graveside, with photos

Myself and Fred were there to represent the Freemasons of Naval & Military Lodge No 3678 based at 47,St Giles Street,Norwich.

Anzac Day 2017 | Ypres / Ieper
Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations and the contribution and suffering of all those who have served. Observed on 25 April each year, Anzac Day was originally to honour the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli against the Ottoman Empire during World War I.
In Ypres – Belgium, the ANZAC-Day Ceremony is held at the Menin Gate at 11 A.M. This memorial attracks many students from Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Some of them may even participate by playing music, holding flags or marching in the stud.
It's an emotional event that takes place at the Menin Gate.
The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing is a war memorial in Ypres, Belgium, dedicated to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient of World War I and whose graves are unknown. The memorial is located at the eastern exit of the town and marks the starting point for one of the main roads out of the town that led Allied soldiers to the front line. Designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield and built and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Menin Gate Memorial was unveiled on 24 July 1927. British and Commonwealth soldiers often passed through the Menenpoort (= Menin Gate) on their way to the front lines with some 300,000 of them being killed in the Ypres Salient. 90,000 of these soldiers have no known graves.

45th Ypres Cat Festival / Ieper Kattenstoet 2018
The best of the parade and onward to the cat throwing. It feels as though the entire town is involved in some way, shape or form. The festival ends with the Town Fool throwing cats from the Cloth Hall tower as a means of pest control. Hilarious.

Last Post Ceremony, Menin Gate, Ypres / Ieper, Belgium - Sept 26th 2011
...Whilst on Royal British Legion Poppy Travel Journey of Remembrance to Ypres... The ceremony takes place at 20:00 every day as an expression of the local's remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifice made by the allied troops defending Belgium during World War 1. A truly moving experience that everyone should attend.
Sanctuary Wood, Hill 62,Belgium
Leaving the historic Belgian town of Ypres via the Menin Gate, you can travel the once heavily- contested Menin Road for just a few kilometres and come across a number of familiar names and places. Sanctuary Wood is on the site of Hill 62 (as was) and is one of the long-established stops for those interested in First War sites. It claims to be an undisturbed section of the trenches and certainly, the outline of craters both big and small are easily made out amidst the dug-outs. There is also a small museum which seems largely unchanged from the first time I visited thirty years ago. Vintage stereoscopes show graphic pictures from the Western Front and each room is lined by 'finds' presumably turned up in nearby fields.I keep expecting to find this place updated but as an example of the way in which we used to remember as well as for its own value, it's a must visit for any student of the Great War.
The Last Post at The Menin Gate, Ypres (Ieper)
A day trip to Antwerp, Ghent and finally Ypres, ended with this wonderful ceremony at the Menin Gate - The 30403rd Last Post on 15/08/2016.
I was incredibly proud to find my great, great, great grandfather, Private John Bewley of the Durham Light Infantry, on the gate aswell.
A very incredible place.
