Wo einst riesige Halden die Landschaft dominierten, wo sich Abraumbagger in den Boden fraßen, wo auf Sperrgebieten russische Atomsprengköpfe lagerten und prächtige Städte verfielen, sieht es heute völlig anders aus. Die Landschaft vor unserer Haustür ist eine andere geworden. Knapp 28 Jahre nach dem Mauerfall sind zwischen Altmark und Vogtland, Oberlausitz und Harz völlig neue Industrie-, Natur-, Verkehrs-, Stadt- und Kulturlandschaften entstanden.
In der ersten Folge entdecken wir aus der Vogelperspektive, wie auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen Truppenübungsplatzes Königsbrücker Heide das einzige Wildnisgebiet Deutschlands entstanden ist. In der Lausitz beweist Marianne Löwa Mut und Unternehmergeist – sie hat ihre eigene Reederei gegründet. Aus einer kargen Mondlandschaft wurde hier eine der größten künstlichen Wasserlandschaften. Wenn aus 40 Gruben 25 Seen entstehen, hat die Lausitz die Mecklenburgische Seenlandschaft übertrumpft.
In der zweiten Folge wird die Neue Landschaft in und rund um Leipzig entdeckt. Wo sich einst gigantische Braunkohletagebaue bis unmittelbar an die Stadtgrenze heran gefressen hatten, liegt heute die Leipziger Südsee. Der Cospudener See ist die Hausbadewanne der Leipziger. Zur Jahrtausendwende war er der erste Bergbaufolgesee des Leipziger Südraums. So wie heute in der Lausitz, brauchte man damals auch hier Fantasie um sich vorzustellen, dass das alles einmal eine Wasserlandschaft wird. Heute werden im Kanupark am Markkleeberger See sogar Europameisterschaften ausgetragen.
Die dritte Folge widmet sich unter anderem dem Thema, wie der Straßenbau die Landschaft verändert hat. So ist zum Beispiel die 2668 Meter lange Unstruttalbrücke Teil der neuen Verkehrslandschaft. Sie ist die zweitlängste Eisenbahnbrücke Deutschlands. Gebaut für die ICE Schnellverbindung zwischen Erfurt und Halle/Leipzig. Sie spannt sich über die breiteste Stelle im Unstruttal, das den klangvollen Beinamen Toscana des Ostens trägt.
Sehr eindrucksvoll wird in drei Folgen aus der Reihe Der Osten – Entdecke wo du lebst gezeigt, wie sich das Gesicht unserer Heimat gewandelt hat und mit ihm die Menschen, die hier leben.

Leipzig is a city in the eastern German state of Saxony. On central Marktplatz, the Renaissance old town hall houses the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig, chronicling city history. Composer J.S. Bach is buried in the late-Gothic St. Thomas Church, known for concerts by its boys’ choir. St. Nicholas Church was a meeting point for the “Monday Demonstrations,” which led to the 1989 overthrow of communism.
'Hypezig!' cry the papers, 'the New Berlin', says just about everybody. Yes, Leipzig is Saxony's coolest city, a playground for nomadic young creatives who have been displaced even by the fast-gentrifying German capital, but it's also a city of enormous history, a trade-fair mecca and solidly in the sights of music lovers due to its intrinsic connection to the lives and work of Bach, Mendelssohn and Wagner.
To this day, one of the world's top classical bands (the Gewandhausorchester) and oldest and finest boys' choirs (the 800-year-old Thomanerchor) continue to delight audiences. When it comes to art, the neo-realistic New Leipzig School has stirred up the international art world with such protagonists as Neo Rauch and Tilo Baumgärtel for well over 10 years. Leipzig is known as the Stadt der Helden (City of Heroes) for its leading role in the 1989 ‘Peaceful Revolution’ that led to the reunification of Germany.
Leipzig acquired the nickname Klein Paris (Little Paris) in the 18th century, when it became a center of a classical literary movement largely led by the German scholar and writer Johann Christoph Gottsched. The city is also the home of the Nikolaikirche (Church of St. Nicholas) – the starting point of peaceful demonstrations against the communist regime which led to German Reunification. The collapse of communism hit Leipzig's economy very heavily (as did communism itself), but after being on the mend for over twenty years, it has emerged as one of the success stories of the New German States.
Traces of Leipzig's history are everywhere: the ring of streets around the city center marking the former course of the city wall, the city trade houses, abandoned and repurposed industrial buildings in Plagwitz, small town structures in the outskirts where surrounding towns were incorporated during phases of rapid growth, the battlefields of the Napoleonic wars in the south and southeast of the city, and much, much more.

Auenhain/Wachau am Markkleeberger See 2018 im Leipziger Neuseenland
Das Naherholungsgebiet Leipziger Neuseenland waren einst Braunkohletagebaue (Espenhain). Heute sind aus den riesigen und tiefen Löchern Badeseen geworden. Auf ihnen wird auch Wassersport betrieben. Der Markkleeberger See und hinter der A38 (rote Brücke) liegt der Störmthaler See mit VINETA, einer schwimmenden Insel, die an die abgebaggerten Orte wie Magdeborn erinnert. Mutige (Männer) dürfen auf der VINETA ihr JA-Wort geben.
Der Bergbau-Technik-Park (im Bild sind die Bagger zu sehen) eignet sich für Technikfreunde und all jene, die sich für die Tagebau-Geschichte der Region Leipzig interessieren. Den Kanupark kennt mittlerweile halb Europa. Ihn können Sportfreunde für Rafting nutzen. Das Auenhainer Feuerfleisch und die vegetarischen Kartoffelpuffer schlemmen Gäste auf der Wildwasser-Terrasse. Diese ist ganzjährig geöffnet. Wachau und Auenhain sind Ortsteile der großen Kreisstadt 04416 Markkleeberg in Sachsen.

Südfriedhof is, with an area of 82 hectares, the largest cemetery in Leipzig. It is located in the south of Leipzig in the immediate vicinity of the Völkerschlachtdenkmal. The Südfriedhof is, along with the Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg and the Südwestkirchfriedhof Stahnsdorf in Berlin, the largest park-like cemetery in Germany.
The plans for the cemetery began in 1879. Initially it was created on an area of 54 hectares. Responsible for this were the horticultural director of Leipzig, Otto Wittenberg and the architect Hugh Licht. The conduct of ways is in form of a linden leaf, which reflects the Slavic name of Leipzig The Town of the Linden, and fulfil the aims of Art Nouveau as a Gesamtkunstwerk.
With the rapid development of the city during its industrialisation, incorporation of nearby settlements and the consequent steady population growth a new cemetery was needed. On 1 June 1886 the Südfriedhof was opened by Mayor Otto Robert Georgi after the Nordfriedhof (North Cemetery) was opened in 1881. Shortly after, the first burial was made and the grave is still preserved in the I. Division. However, this burial ground was very unpopular at first. Many citizens of Leipzig chose to be buried at the Neuer Johannisfriedhof (New St. John's Cemetery) but this changed when it began to fill up and the trees on the Südfriedhof became greater and the proposed park character was recognisable.
Visitors to the nearby Völkerschlachtdenkmal notice at first the chapel with its 60 meter high bell tower, which was opened in 1910. The Neo-Romanesque building ensemble, was built on a filled-up plateau and under the direction of Leipzig's building director Otto Wilhelm Scharenberg. It had the Romanesque Maria Laach Abbey in the Eifel region as a model and is the largest cemetery monument in Germany. The symmetrical complex of chapel facilities, crematorium and columbarium blends inconspicuously into the overall picture and is justified to the main north-south axis of the cemetery. Until 1924 the cemetery was enlarged to 63 hectares. During World War II the most recent cemetery extension was made to the present area of 82 hectares. They buried the 3474 victims of the World War II bombing of Leipzig in today's XXVIII. Division.
