Calumet region (The Region) steel mills + Chicago skyline (including sunset) from a great Gary beach
Hit that lower right gear symbol first for full 1080 HD on this one.
--- Info on this beach newly-featured in the NY Times ---
A 25 minute video tour of the lakeside sides of the Calumet region's steel mills + more when approaching sunset on a June day in 2017. Brief beach scenes including seagull flocks feeding and a bonfire from a distance. Chicago skyline scenes before, during and after the sunset, and, the sun going down into the water to be extinguished for the night. No music: just wind and waves (though a brief guest appearance by a cellphone beeping).
This was taken from Gary's easternmost beach, Marquette Park: a nice place at least this time of year and on a weekday evening.
The video starts with about 10 still shots of the Inland Steel plant, some video grabs and other related shots, then it gets on with business.
Multiple sweeps of the heavy industry under the changing lighting conditions. Uncounted seagulls flying in the foreground in all shots leaven the otherwise grim industrial scenes and add to the Chicago skyline views. Includes Inland Steel in Portage (plus foreground beachgoers at Indiana state and national parks) but mostly what's in Gary, Hammond, Whiting, East Chicago, etc. The armpit of the nation. Maybe even some South Chicago plants in there too, at the end of the horizon. I'm not a native nor a geographer so I don't know. Production has wound down somewhat over the years and the visible pollution has lessened. Back in the day, through the 70s at least, the locals were treated to grey-colored snow in the Winter, and drivers passing by on the way to Chicago would roll up their windows (ineffective) to try to block out the overpowering smells of the steel-making and the coke plants processing the coal. The good old days. And this doesn't touch on what an ecological disaster the elimination of the sand dunes and ecosystems was to create this area originally. Mostly just the Indiana dunes state and national parks are left.
the Chicago skyline is shown in all its lakeside glory, before, during and after the sunset, bookended by the Sears Tower and the Hancock building. These are the views that those of us more used to seeing the sunsets from places like Warren Dunes in Michigan aren't able to see (at least big or clearly on a regular basis) because of the distance, though those industry and skyline-free views and the SW Michigan part of the lake ARE the best, of course. This video is another reminder that, while the lake SEEMS like an ocean, it has this strange aspect, too, at least in Indiana. The word of the day is: Juxtaposition. Look that up in your Funk and Wagnalls.

EXPLORING A Garys Indiana historical abandoned theater
The Palace Theater was built by Maximillian Dubois' construction company Max and Sons, who also built the Marquette Park Pavilion in Gary. Construction began in 1924 and the theater opened a year later featuring live stage shows, vaudeville acts, and motion pictures.
From the time it opened, the theater was one of the grandest venues in the town, but when the US Steel plant in Gary went into decline, so did the rest of the town, including the historic theater. The theater slid into decline, and eventually shut down entirely in 1972.
The abandoned theater has since come to be a common symbol of urban decay, and is a frequent subject of photography and urban exploration. The exterior ornamentation has been largely picked away by scavengers, leaving gaping holes in the sides of the building.
In 1987, private investors planned to spend over $500,000 to renovate the theater and the nearby storefronts, but eventually abandoned the deal after the first restaurant opened was unsuccessful.
When the Miss USA pageant was held in Gary in 2002, Donald Trump renovated the front of the theater. Sheets of plywood covering the windows were painted to depict a false interior, and an external marquee was mounted, declaring Jackson Five Tonite. Google Street View and the show Life After People: The Series (Season 1, Episode 2) show the marquee unchanged as of 2009. Plastic signs reading Jackson Five Forever were placed on both sides of the marquee after the death of Michael Jackson. Both signs have since been lost to the wind.
In 2012 there is renewed interest in reviving the theater. Supporters of the Palace have established a page on Facebook to generate support for restoration of the theater.

He was a key founder of U.S. Steel in 1901, bringing together partners J. P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, and Charles M. Schwab. The city of Gary, Indiana, a steel town, was named for him when it was founded in 1906. Gary, West Virginia was also named after him.
