Marubai Gavdevi Mandir: Kshetra charitram (“Temple history”)
The temple of Marubai plays an instrumental role in the history of this great city of Mumbai. Mumbai (the erstwhile Bombay) was originally a group of seven islands on the Arabian Sea. These were the islands of Colaba, Old woman’s island, Bombay, Mazgaon, Worli, Mahim and Matunga. The island of Matunga extended from the current day Parel to Sion. Sion marked the northern boundary of the erstwhile Bombay (i.e. group of seven islands) and hence was called ‘Sheev’ in Marathi which means boundary.
All these islands were group of villages with majority population of fishermen. Most of these islands, hence, had a ‘Grama devata’ i.e. protector deity of the villages as you would find in most villages in India. The Matunga cluster of villages had goddess Marubai as their grama devata.
As far as the name of the deity as ‘Marubai’ is concerned, folklore says that the villages in Matunga used to be frequently affected with various waterborne diseases (since this island was enveloped with salt-water on all sides). Villagers did 'Abhishek' over the idol and drank that water and became healthy. Hence, she came to be called “Maru-bai” i.e. one who protects from ‘Death’
Originally the area of Matunga was called ‘Marubai Tekdi Gaon’ which was later on shortened to ‘Matunga’. Some legends also state that this was the place where Sage Matanga performed penance in the days of yore and hence this place was called ‘Matangashrama’ and then to Matunga in current times.
The idol of Marubai which is a svayambhu (self-manifested) was originally under a peepul tree (ashvattha tree) in King’s circle. In the 19th century, East India company began the development of a single city of Bombay by reclaiming sea land and joining these islands. As per the historical records available with the trustee of this temple Mr. Anil Gawand (whose ancestors were sarpanch of the villages in Matunga as well as the administrators of the Marubai temple), under the City of Bombay Improvement Act (B.I.T) of 1888, the British acquired the land from the villagers of Matunga for development of the city. Hence for building of roads & other infrastructure, the idol was moved from King’s circle to the current day location. Respecting the beliefs of the inhabitants, they also built a small temple for Marubai - the ‘protector deity’ of the village. By the wish of the Goddess who is Sharada (Goddess of learning Herself), they also reserved 100 plots in the area of Matunga for educational purposes
Between 1990 and 2000, Shankaracharya of Kanchipuram performed the Kumbhabhishekam of the temple and also advised to perform Chandika Homam for every Pournami which has been happening till date.
The Goddess shines as Ashtabhuja Durga and continues to bless her children in this sacred place of Matunga.
