Visiting an old Japanese village and Matsumoto Castle
Do you want to see more of Japan's countryside and visit some hidden treasures? We explored the area around Hakuba valley and did a daytrip to Matsumoto Castle, one of the national treasures of Japan. Spontaneously, we decided to visit the old Japanese village Narai-Juku, an old post town on the Nakasendo trail connecting Kyoto and Tokyo. Both locations are perfect to learn something about Japanese history and are very picturesque. We loved this historic excursion around Japan's countryside! Did you?

*How to Travel to Matsumoto Castle by Train*
From Tokyo to Nagano it takes 1 hour and 22 mins on the Shinkansen. Then from Nagano station, you’ll take the JR to Matsumoto Station which takes about 50 minutes. From Matsumoto station, it is a short 15 minute walk to the castle.
*Matsumoto Travel Tip*
Before heading to Matsumoto I dropped off my luggage in a locker at Nagano station. It's a convenient way to not have to carry a large suitcase everywhere you go for a day. It's super easy to use - just follow the instructions on the computer.
Even though this machine is marked with Suica you can still use PASMO and vice versa. If you're using an older coin locker you should take a picture of the locker and the area around it just in case you forget where it is when you come back for your stuff.
*Does It Cost Money to Visit Matsumoto Castle?*
If you don't want to pay to go into the castle, you can walk around the castle. It is a relaxing stroll and be sure to take plenty of photos of the castle from different angles.
It cost 610 yen a person to go inside the castle courtyard and castle.
*Matsumoto Castle fun facts*
Here are some interesting facts about Matsumoto castle:
- It is unique because it is a hirajiro which is a castle built on plains rather than on a hill or mountain. Because of this the castle has to build its own defense system which includes inter-connecting walls, moats, and gatehouses. Also it makes for great picture because of the Northern Alps in the background of the castle
- There are 12 castles all around Japan but only two is five stories high: this one and Himeji castle. But there's a secret inside: there is an extra floor inside that looks like a loft.
- Matsumoto castle is also known as the black castle because of its black exterior
*Frog Street: Nawate Dori Street*
On your way back to the JR station don't forget to check out Nawate dori street, which is also known as frog street.
There used to be a ton of Kajika frogs which roamed this area. In 1959, a typhoon came and caused the river to overflow. This made all the frogs leave for higher ground and cleaner water upstream. The people worked hard to clean up the river, but the frogs never came back. The people of the city then built many artificial frogs to bring Nawate Street’s spirit back.
In 1972, the Kaeru Daimyoujin, a mini frog shrine, was created to revamp the old street. Nawate Street was then coined Kaeru Machi ('Frog Street'), a place where locals and travelers could bask in the lively atmosphere of days past.
It is Matsumoto's Edo Era-themed shopping street. It takes you back into history and see how shops back then used to look like. There are cute boutique shops and antique dealers. If you want a little snack there are bakeries and candy stories.

A day in Matsumoto, Japan
Matsumoto Japan. A relaxing place near Nagano with the popular Matsumoto castle. The Matsumoto castle in Japan is often considered the most popular castle in Japan, but that can be debated. The castle is $4 US dollars (410 yen ????) to get in but the garden is free. Outside of Matsumoto castle is a big park with a beautiful Japanese style red bridge. One of the bridges is used to get to grounds near the Matsumoto castle, which is where you can see people plays games, eating and of course taking pictures of the Matsumoto castle. Inside the castle is ancient artifacts from the history of the area, and facts about the castle.

Matsumoto Castle 松本城 and Yudanaka Onsen Town
Visited the historic Matsumoto Castle, then took the train and traveled to Yamanouchi, and stayed in Yudanaka, which is another onsen or hot spring resort town. I love hot springs in Japan and the whole experience of it all. Yudanaka is in Nagano Prefecture, and it's quite close to where the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics were held.

Matsumoto Castle Virtually - Nagano Prefecture Japan
Matsumoto Castle Virtually
I had filmed this sim back in November of 2010 but had to put it all aside to care for family Im so glad I found them so I was able to piece this together.
Here's a little about the Matsumoto Castle.
Matsumoto Castle is the oldest castle in Nagano. Nagano is a city in Japan which is located in Matsumoto, in Nagano Prefecture.
Matsumoto Castle is a fortress which has six floors. On every floor we can see the history at that time. On the first floor is the ground floor and on the sixth floor you can see the view from the top.
Matsumoto Castle is a fortress located in Matsumoto, which is one of the most complete form of palaces and old in Japan, Matsumoto. If you want to enjoy how beautiful the Matsumoto Castle then you can use ground transportation lane. By foot you can reach the Castle Matsumoto for 15 minutes. In addition to achieving Matsumoto Castle, you can also use trains in the area of Matsumoto.
Matsumoto Castle (Matsumoto-jo?), also known as the Crow Castle (??, Karasu-jo?) because of its black exterior, is one of Japan's premier historic castles.[1] It is located in the city of Matsumoto, in Nagano Prefecture and is within easy reach of Tokyo by road or rail.
The keep (tenshukaku), which was completed in the late 16th century, maintains its original wooden interiors and external stonework. It is listed as a National Treasure of Japan.
Matsumoto Castle is a flatland castle (hirajiro) because it is not built on a hilltop or amid rivers, but on a plain.[1] Its complete defences would have included an extensive system of inter-connecting walls, moats and gatehouses.
The castle's origins go back to the Sengoku period. At that time Shimadachi Sadanaga of the Ogasawara clan built a fort on this site in 1504 which was originally called Fukashi Castle. In 1550 it came under the rule of the Takeda clan and then Tokugawa Ieyasu.
When Toyotomi Hideyoshi transferred Ieyasu to the Kanto region, he placed Ishikawa Norimasa in charge of Matsumoto. Norimasa and his son Yasunaga built the tower and other parts of the castle, including the three towers: the keep and the small tower in the northwest, both begun in 1590, and the Watari Tower; the residence; the drum gate; the black gate, the Tsukimi Yagura, the moat, the innermost bailey, the second bailey, the third bailey, and the sub-floors in the castle, much as they are today. They were also instrumental in laying out the castle town and its infrastructure. It is believed much of the castle was completed by 1593--94.

Japanese castles (shiro) were fortresses composed primarily of wood and stone. They evolved from the wooden stockades of earlier centuries, and came into their most well-known form in the 16th century. The castles of Japan were built to guard important or strategic sites, such as ports, river crossings, or crossroads, and almost always incorporated the landscape into their defense. Though they were built to last, and used more stone in their construction than most Japanese buildings, castles were still constructed primarily of wood, and many were destroyed over the years. This was especially true during the Sengoku ('Warring States') period (1467 - 1603), when many of these castles were first built. However, many were rebuilt, either later in the Sengoku period, and in the Edo period (1603 - 1867) which followed
