Matsumoto is a mountain city on Japan’s main island, Honshu. It’s known for Matsumoto Castle, a 16th-century stronghold nicknamed “Crow Castle” for its distinctive black walls.
Nearby Nakamachi Street is lined with old merchant houses reminiscent of a bygone Japan. The Japanese Alps loom overhead, with hot springs, ski runs, and hiking trails. In summer, a road to Mount Norikura is carved through deep walls of snow.

A Beautiful Trip, Three Days in Matsumoto

My second home here... just a random day with some touristy facts. Matsumoto is a 3 to 4 hour ride on the Azusa line from Shinjuku station. Nice way to get outta Tokyo for a long weekend if you can come up with the train fare.... about 17000yen round trip.

Daily Life in Nawate-Dori Street - Matsumoto ᴴᴰ ● なわて通り商店街 松本
► Nawate Dori is a nice little, old fashioned shopping street (dori means street in Japanese) alongside the canal in Matsumoto, halfway between Matsumoto Station and Matsumoto Castle.
It's lined with mostly craft shops, snack foods and little restaurants.
A great little spot for a walk, well worth a visit if you happen to be in Matsumoto. - Enjoy.

Japan 2016 Day 3 Matsumoto Castle
This was my trip to Matsumoto Castle with the other chaperones. It was a bit crowded inside, but absolutely incredible. The castle dates back to the late 1500's and had a very interesting history with its early contact (though indirect) with the western world. Several of the displays had muskets from Tanegashima, another historical site I will be visiting. This castle has 6 floors and is brilliantly crafted and is quite ominous to stand below. I certainly wouldn't want to attack it.
I want to thank Tanaka and Uesugi for taking us on this wonderful day trip and the city of Takayama as well.

Natürlich ist Matsumoto berühmt für seine Burg, aber es gibt noch ein Paar andere Dinge zu erleben. Wer etwas mehr Zeit mitgebracht hat, kann im Matsumoto Art Museum Werke Japanischer Künstler bewundern. Eine der berühmtesten Töchter der Stadt ist sicherlich Yayoi Kusama, deren Arbeiten sich besonders durch die konsequente Darstellung von Polka Dots auszeichnen. Da sie in Matsumoto geboren wurde, hat sie die Gestaltung der Außenfassade des Museums übernommen und gleich wieder ihr Markenzeichen zum Einsatz gebracht. Außerdem ein bisschen schmusen mit John????Love you!

Japan's Largest Illumination Theme Park! Japan Trip Episode 3 - Matsumoto and Nagoya
After an amazing time in Nagano with the snow monkeys, we stopped in Matsumoto for 1 night, just to see the castle and relax a little bit. Then we made our way to Nagoya to visit Naba No Sato, Japan’s largest illumination display.
It was a quick trip to both cities, but we had a good time. Next stop Kyoto!

☆Bits of knowledge〜Matsumoto castle〜
Matsumoto Castle (松本城 Matsumoto-jō) is Japan’s oldest castle. It also known as the “Crow Castle” (烏城 Karasu-jo) because of its black exterior. Matsumoto Castle is the oldest existing castle in Japan and one of Japan’s premier historic castles.
With 400 years of history, Matsumoto Castle is a National Treasure that every Japan visitor should see. Formerly called Fukashi Castle, it was a branch castle of the Ogasawara family during the long period of the warring states. It is located in the city of Matsumoto, in Nagano Prefecture and is within easy reach of Tokyo, Nagano and Hakuba by road or rail (see getting to Matsumoto below). Matsumoto Castle is a flatland castle (hirajiro) because it is not built on a hilltop or amid rivers, but on a plain. Its complete defences would have included an extensive system of inter-connecting walls, moats and gatehouses.
