Snorkeling at Ulua Beach, Maui, Hawaii
On the Hawaiian Island of Maui, the town of Kihei offers a wide range of rental condominiums, shops and restaurants. For visitors who enjoy shallow water snorkeling, Kihei provides access to many popular underwater sites. Daily, dive boats from the Mā‛alaea Harbor and the Kihei Small Boat Harbor make early morning offshore trips to the partially-sunken crater of Molokini. For shoreline dives, Ahihi Bay and Ahihi Cove in the Ahihi Kinau Area Natural reserve are sites noted for abundant fish, but rocks and pebbles make for a difficult water entry. For a pain-free entry from a sandy beach, the Ulua Beach diving site is extremely popular with both snorkelers and beginner-level scuba divers. This beach is in the Wailea Resort area, with a large public parking lot (best to arrive before 9 a.m., though) showers, and rest rooms. As with all Kihei-area dive sites, the morning hours provide the calmest and clearest water conditions ---- in the afternoon, clouds tend to arrive from the Haleakula volcano area, and brisk Trade Winds create waves.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
I shot the JPEGs and video clips in this YouTube video using a CANON PowerShot ELPH 100HS point-and-shoot digital camera in an inexpensive, waterproof DiCAPac WP-ONE “plastic pouch” (from Amazon.com).
This pouch uses a heavy-duty zip-lock seal, rolled up tightly and held in place with Velcro. The porthole is coated glass, and the soft vinyl body is flexible enough for operation of camera buttons. (I added a desiccant capsule from a bottle of over-the-counter pills). I also set the CANON camera for wide-angle operation (underwater, this setting is effectively normal angle), and used the Program mode set as Underwater ----- this boosts red to counteract the overall blueness of underwater scenes (just remember to reset to a normal auto mode for dry-land pictures!).
Underwater, I found that viewing the camera's LCD screen was a lot easier than squinting through a viewfinder. Having 8 GB of camera memory, of course, left me free to take lots of images, and even lots of 1280x720 HD movie clips. Overall, with clear seawater and bright sunshine, the camera/camera pouch combination produced amazingly realistic underwater digital images.
Molokini Crater and Makena Snorkeling (GoPro Hero 4)
Molokini Crater and Makena Maui Snorkeling Tour through our NCL Pride of America Excursions.
The Pacific Whale Foundation snorkeling tour boat embarked at 9am and we sailed about an hour out to Molokini Crater. I've never been snorkeling before and must say that I wasn't expecting the view. Wow. The water was perfectly clear in and around the Molokini Crater. Saw tons of fish, coral, and other sea life.
After an hour we all got back on the boat and went to the Makena beach area. This was an open water dive against the coast. The captain told us we'd be lucky to see a few turtles. It didn't take long and we saw a whole family of them.
All of the video was shot on my GoPro Hero 4 Silver using 1080p at 60fps.

Snorkeling Molokini Crater and Turtle Town???????? Maui, Hawaii
Maui Magic Snorkel Trip to Molokini Crater and Turtle town. This was a 5 hour snorkel morning tour that included breakfast and lunch. Unlimited alcoholic drinks and non alcoholic drinks were also included with the price. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone coming to visit or any local looking for a fun snorkel activity. Staff was very friendly, food was decent, and drinks were awesome. As you can see we had no shortage of visuals!
Molokini Crater ~
Molokini is a crescent-shaped, partially submerged volcanic crater which forms a small, uninhabited islet located in ʻAlalākeiki Channel between the islands of Maui and Kahoʻolawe, within Maui County in Hawaiʻi. It is the remains of one of the seven Pleistocene epoch volcanoes that formed the prehistoric Maui Nui island, during the Quaternary Period of the Cenozoic Era.
The islet has an area of 23 acres (9.3 ha),[2] a diameter of about 0.4 miles (0.6 km), is 161 feet (50 m) at its highest point,[3] and is located about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of Makena State Park and south of Maʻalaea Bay. The islet is a Hawaiʻi State Seabird Sanctuary.
Turtle Town ~
Green sea turtles hang out all around Turtle Town, which is located in a beautiful patch of ocean near Makena. The healthy and expansive coral reef there is a perfect place for the turtles to graze. They can also find all kinds of places to rest on the bottom. Be sure to consider the shape of a turtle as you float above the reef. Sometimes you will see just one back flipper sticking out from under the coral, and it can look like a large leaf.

Places to see in ( Maui - USA ) Kihei
Places to see in ( Maui - USA ) Kihei
Kīhei is a census-designated place in Maui County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 20,881 at the 2010 census. Although its official city designation is Wailuku, the Kīhei Junction Park and Ride lot is a frequently-used commuter parking lot at the corner of highway 310 (North Kihei Road) and highway 30 (Honoapi'ilani Highway). There is no public bus service that stops here; however, it is located near Ma 'alaea Harbor Village, where there is a public transportation stop. It's primarily used for hikers, bicyclists and ride sharers looking for a meeting place that is centrally located between Kīhei, Lahaina and Wailuku. There's no charge to park; the lot is unattended.
Kihei is beach-combing territory on Maui’s southwest shore, the sunniest, driest end of the island. Once a regular destination for sojourning Hawaiian royalty, Kihei features 6 miles of beaches offering clear views of Kahoolawe, Molokini, Lanai and West Maui. Along with swimming and surfing, you can also find great snorkeling and kayaking — and you may even spot a giant humpback whale spouting or breaching the ocean’s surface.
Kihei’s Kalama Beach Park’s 36 oceanfront acres are dotted with shady lawns and palm trees. The park is home to “the Cove” surf spot, beach volleyball courts, a roller-skating rink, a skate park, basketball and tennis courts, two baseball fields, picnic pavilions and a playground designed for younger kids.
A blink away are Kalpolepo, Waipuilani and the three beaches of Kamaole. Birdwatchers and nature lovers will find what they’re looking for at Kealia Pond on the north end of Kihei. This National Wildlife Conservation District features endangered Hawaiian stilts and coots.
Also north of Kihei is Maalaea Bay, where pleasure boats launch to take visitors on whale watching expeditions, charter fishing excursions and snorkel trips to Molokini. Maalaea is also home to the family friendly Maui Ocean Center.
The town has a collection of affordable accommodations, with condominiums, small hotels and cottages to choose from along Kihei’s beach road. You can also browse small shopping malls, a bustling farmers market and a spate of restaurants, all of which cater to residents and visitors alike. Nightlife here includes karaoke spots, dance clubs and sports bars ensuring your Kihei nights are just as fun as your days.
Several research facilities are located in Kihei, including the main offices for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, seed operations by DEKALB Genetics Corporation and Monsanto Company, and the Maui Research and Technology Park, which is home to the Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC), and the Pacific Disaster Center and is overseen by the Air Force Maui Optical and Supercomputing observatory (AMOS).
Major employers in Kihei include Safeway, Monsanto, the Hawai'i Department of Education, the Kihei Canoe Club, Keller Williams Realty Maui, Goodfellow Bros., Fred's Mexican Cafe, and NextHome Pacific Properties.

Maui Hawaii Road Trip
Maui Hawaii Road Trip
We went on a five day road trip along the coast of Maui. Maui is a fantastic environment in that each side has a different habitat. For each of our five days, we embarked on an adventure to a new location. Each day, the habitat and animals we saw were new and unique to the days before. It is an amazing experience that we encountered many different aspects on one island.
The island is formed by the volcano, so the beaches were covered with black rocks, which are molten lava cooled down.
The atmosphere and attitude in Maui Hawaii are very relaxing. It is a escape from the busy lives of the cities. In Maui Hawaii, when I step out of my room, everything I see and do takes my mind off of work.
We concluded our trip watching the sunset on top of Haleakala, Maui's most famous volcano. The view was above the clouds, and felt like we were standing above the sky.
Our Journey:
Road to Hana - Hana - Wailea - Lahaina - Haleakala
Thanks for watching!
Fun Facts of Maui:
• Winter is 71 degrees, summer is 78 degrees, average is 75 degrees.
• The famous Banyon Tree in Lahaina is 130 years old and shades almost two thirds of an acre.
• As of 2015, Maui's population is around 150,000 people.
• Maui has more accessible beaches than the other Hawaiian islands.
• The scenic Road to Hana drive is 45 miles long, has 54 one-lane bridges and 600 hairpin turns
• Maui is about a half an hour by air from Honolulu.
• Maui Hawaii is the second largest island in Hawaii.
• There are three counties in Maui Hawaii: Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe

MOLOKINI CRATER SNORKELING
To book your next Hawaii vacations to Maui and the Molokini snorkeling adventure or any other of the Hawaiian Islands, visit or call 877-918-8941.
On the last day of our Maui trip, we went on a snorkel adventure to the Molokini crater, just off the shores of the big Maui island.
Originally, the trip had been canceled, due to early afternoon flights, but we managed to shoehorn it in with some help from Blue Sky Tours ( and the Maui Visitors Bureau (
One of the bigger summer swells that Maui's seen in a while had just happened a couple days before the snorkeling day, so the water was still a bit choppy and rough. However, inside the crater's protective walls, the water was a cool, refreshing paradise! The one change to the normal Play Paradise ( snorkel tour was the visit to Turtle Town. Typically, a calm haven for honu (sea turtles), it was just a rough mess on this day, so we didn't get to see any honu.
Our tour left from Makena Beach, just outside the Makena Beach and Golf Resort ( As you'll see in the video, at times, boarding the catamaran could be challenging with the rough seas, but the crew of the boat got us all aboard safely, even if they had to sacrifice their own bodies!
From there, it was just a quick trip out to the Molokini crater. We had plenty of snorkel time and then took a quick tour of South Maui, including Big and Little Beach and a check of Turtle Town before heading back to Makena Beach. On calm days, they will put out the sails for the return trip, but obviously, it was just too rough on our day.
More about the sunrise snorkel sail with Play Paradise:
An early riser's paradise, our Molokini Express snorkel tour gets you to Molokini Crater first for undisturbed snorkeling pleasure at one of the world's most popular snorkel destinations! After you've had the opportunity to fully experience Molokini Snorkeling, we head over to Turtle Town, another fabulous Maui snorkel site. Arriving before all the other tour boats, lets you experience these fabulous Maui snorkeling destinations with fewer crowds.
Make sure you are wearing beach clothes that can get wet -- this tour picks you up at Makena Beach right in front of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort.
More about the Makena Beach and Golf Resort:
There are few places left in Hawaii where you can stroll along quiet stretches of sand, see waves splash on ancient storied shores and feel what the Hawaiians call the mana or spirit of the land. One such place is Wailea-Makena, home to the only resort in the area. Our Hawaii resort is uniquely located on the southwestern coast of Maui away from the hustle and bustle and a five minute drive from the finest shopping & dining at the Shops at Wailea. In Makena the grass grows greener and the beaches are ranked the best in the world. Formerly the resort known as the Maui Prince Hotel, it is time to uncover Maui's hidden gem, Makena Beach & Golf Resort.
Makena Beach & Golf Resort is Maui's complete destination Resort. Sparkling Pacific ocean views from every guest room, pristine white sand Makena beaches, spectacular 18-hole Makena Golf Course, Makena Tennis Club, enticing diningoptions featuring authentic Japanese Cuisine and Pacific Rim dining favorites, premier oceanfront spa massages, state of the art Prince Gym, and the best oceanside recreation you will find on Maui.
