Graz, Mausoleum, Kaiser Ferdinand II. - Austria HD Travel Channel
Graz, the capital of Styria, entered the historical stage late. Although settlement activity in this area could be detected already in 3,000 BC., Graz received its town charter only in the 12th century. In Styria resided the Traungauer - earls, margraves and dukes of the line of Otakar. Emperor Ferdinand II, regarded as trigger of the 30-year war, was born and buried in Graz. With him Graz became the center of European history although he had his government in Vienna.
Ferdinand II was considered as good-natured but easily influenced ruler, who was all too much under the negative influence of his advisers Ulrich von Eggenberg and Wallenstein, who enriched themselves at his expense. Educated by the Jesuits in Ingolstadt, Ferdinand could cancel the principle of freedom of religion and forced especially Protestants into exile, a development that culminated in the Thirty Years War.
His burial plot in the St. Catherine's Church right next to the cathedral is considered the biggest mausoleum of the House of Habsburg. The oval dome of the chapel is the first of its kind outside of Italy.

Graz is the capital city of the southern Austrian province of Styria. The roots of Graz can be traced back to Roman times, when a small fort was built where the city centre is today; Slovenians later built a larger fortress in the same place. The name Graz is derived from the Slovenian word gradec, which means small castle. At its heart is Hauptplatz, the medieval old town’s main square. Shops and restaurants line the narrow surrounding streets, which blend Renaissance and baroque architecture. A funicular leads up Schlossberg, the town hill, to the Uhrturm, a centuries-old clock tower. Across the River Mur, futuristic Kunsthaus Graz exhibits contemporary art.
Other museums include the Landeszeughaus, with its weaponry collection, entered via the imposing arcade courtyard of the Landhaushof. The city’s cathedral, the late-Gothic Domkirche, stands next to Ferdinand II’s Mausoleum on the old town’s eastern edge, near the sprawling Stadtpark. Traditionally clad figures emerge 3 times a day from the nearby Glockenspiel, or bell tower. The Murinsel, a twisting steel island linking the River Mur’s banks, contains an amphitheater, playground and cafe. Eggenberg Palace, set in a park on Graz’s western outskirts, features ornate rococo decor, plus art, archaeology and coin exhibitions.
The old town of Graz is easily explored on foot and is reachable with a 20 min walk from the main train station. Stop at the Tourist Information at the train station, or any hotel lobby that you come across to pick up a brochure on attractions in Graz. This brochure also contains a map with most of the sights marked, as well as recommended self-guided walking routes through the town.

On the main square of Graz, the provincial capital of Styria in Austria, dominated by the town hall, there is a monument of Archduke Johann, who rendered outstanding services to the Styria. He promoted the progress in technology and agriculture and also in art, culture and on a social field. His solidarity of the people made him a role model of the Styrian people. Due to his marriage to the civil Anna Plochl he had to give up the succession to the throne. His wife and son were granted 15 years later the hereditary title Countess and Count of Meran. It is to him that we owe the foundation of the Universal museum Joanneum.
In the Herrengasse – a baroque boulevard in the center - you can see the house in which Napoleon had his accommodation.
A few steps away is the Landhaus, seat of the government of Styria. It is considered one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Central Europe. Of particular interest is the arcade court inside.
Past the opera that presents itself quite artistically packaged, we reach the old center of power with the castle and the mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II.
The imperial court has influenced the architecture of the surrounding shops.

Ferdinand II.
450 Jahre Tiroler Landesfürst
Jubiläumsausstellung
Vor 450 Jahren, am 17. Jänner 1567, hielt Erzherzog Ferdinand II. (1529 - 1595) seinen feierlichen Einzug in Innsbruck.

A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999, the Graz Old Town is one of the best preserved districts in all of central Europe. Graceful Graz
I got the opportunity to visit a beautiful city called Graz. It is the capital of Styria and the second-largest city in Austria after Vienna. We stayed nearby in a small Austrian village in an authentic countryside house with a beautiful view of the green hills.
I found the architecture of the buildings in the city very interesting. Very colourful, some houses even had painting on them. We also climbed up to the Schlossberg which is a hill dominating the old town (475 m (1,558.40 ft) high) with a site of demolished fortress, with views over Graz. The Uhrturm clocktower is the symbol of Graz on the top of Schlossberg. We also visited the gorgeous Lipizzaner horses.

MAXIMILIAN I. »Zu Lob und ewiger Gedachtnus« Sonderausstellung in Schloss Ambras, Innsbruck
