The Mawangdui Han Relics in The Hunan Provincial Museum, Changsha, China
One of the all time best museums Travels With Sheila has ever visited would have to be the Hunan Provincial Museum in Changsha. This museum draws huge crowds for two reasons. All China museums are free and because of the fantastic 2,100 year old objects from the Han Tombs discovered in Mawangdui.
Like the Egyptians, the Chinese begin preparing for death as soon as they are born. The Han Tombs of Mawangdui were accidently found and very prominent treasures emerged. Manuscripts and paintings written on SILK. Laquerware, figures of the Dai family servants, bronze seals, musical instruments and so much more.
And, the Hunan Provincial Museum had...the Marquise of Dai's mummy (look at that mind-boggling mummy in the next video)...

Watch the video and let me know if you've ever seen such an incredibly, well-preserved mummy. Her knee caps looked to be in better shape than mine!
Mawangdui was the family graveyard in the Western Han Dynasty and had the tombs of Li Kang (The Marquis of Dai), Li Kang's wife and their son. The amount of cultural relics found in this family tomb would rank them as biliionaires today.

Xin Zhui, also known as Lady Dai or Marquise of Dai, was the wife of Li Cang, the Marquis of Dai, during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE). She gained fame more than 2,000 years after her death, when her tomb was discovered inside a hill known as Mawangdui, in Changsha, Hunan, China. After opening the tomb, workers discovered her exceptionally preserved remains alongside hundreds of valuable artifacts and documents. Her body and belongings are currently under the care of the Hunan Provincial Museum, which has allowed occasional international exhibits.
Xin Zhui lived an extravagant lifestyle. She enjoyed having her own musicians for entertainment, whom she had play for parties as well as personal amusement. She may have enjoyed playing music as well, particularly the qin, which was traditionally associated with refinement and intellect. As a noble, Xin Zhui also had access to a variety of imperial foods, including various types of meat, which were reserved for the royal family and members of the ruling class. Much of her clothing was made of silk and other valuable textiles, and she owned a variety of cosmetics.
As age caught up with her, Xin Zhui suffered from a number of ailments that would eventually lead to her death. Alongside a number of internal parasites, she also had coronary thrombosis and arteriosclerosis, most likely linked to excessive weight gained due to a sedentary lifestyle. A fused spinal disc probably caused her immense pain, which contributed to a decrease in physical activity. She also suffered from gallstones, one of which lodged in her bile duct and further deteriorated her condition.
After outliving her husband and, potentially, her son, Xin Zhui died around 50 years of age in 163 BCE. Her cause of death was a heart attack, brought about by years of poor health. She was buried in an immense tomb at Mawangdui in Changsha, with more than 1,000 items ranging from drink and food vessels, to silk clothing and tapestries, to figurines of musicians and mourners.

As the Cold War casts its fearsome shadow across the East, a team of workers in China’s Hunan province is busy digging an air raid shelter. However, as they cut their way through the earth, they stumble upon an elaborate tomb that’s lain buried for thousands of years. Its occupant died at the time of the Han Dynasty, but her body appears to have miraculously escaped the ravages of time.
Back in 1971 political tensions were flaring between the Soviet Union and the rest of the world. Moreover, just as the United States was encouraging its citizens to be prepared in the event of a nuclear attack, China was building air raid shelters in order to protect its civilians.

That year it was decided that a shelter should be built at a hospital near Changsha, a city in southern China. However, when workers began construction, they uncovered an astonishing surprise. Indeed, hidden some 40 feet beneath the city, they came across an ancient tomb.
The following year, some 1,500 students joined archaeologists to complete the mammoth task of excavating the tomb. Amazingly, they found more than 1,000 artifacts buried alongside the occupant. Clearly, they’d discovered the final resting place of an important member of Han Dynasty society.

Changsha is one of China's great inland metropolises, and it is now opening up for tourism. It is interesting for tourists because it is less touristy, more authenticly Chinese, and prices are lower than in the better known tourist locals.
Changsha, the capital of central China’s Hunan province, is a large city with a history dating to the Zhou dynasty . Today it’s known for its rare collection of excavated Western Han dynasty tombs, known as the Mawangdui. It’s also associated with Mao Zedong, who studied and lived here before joining the Chinese Communist Party in the 1920s.
Changsha is also famous for its tasty food.
2. Han Painting and Pictorial Designs
This lecture considers the growth of pictorial art during the Han dynasty (208 BCE to 220 CE), beginning with paintings on silk (including the famous flying garment) from the tombs at Changsha, continuing with pictures on tomb objects (mingqi) and lacquer designs, and ending with the remarkable relief pictures on tomb tiles found in Sichuan. Early renderings of space and the beginnings of expressive brushwork are revealed in visual analyses of all these.

Significance
Xin Zhui's body and tomb are considered one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.Besides having some of the best preserved human remains ever discovered in China, the contents of Xin Zhui's tomb revealed an incredible amount of information about life in the Han dynasty that was previously unknown.
The discovery continues to advance the fields of archaeology and science in the 21st century, particularly in the area of preservation of ancient human remains.
Scientists in 2003 developed a secret compound that was injected into Xin Zhui's still existing blood vessels to assure her preservation.
Research at the Hunan Museum continues in an effort to perfect corpse preservation, using Xin Zhui as the main candidate for such procedures.
