Dr. John McLoughlin, baptized Jean-Baptiste McLoughlin, (October 19, 1784 -- September 3, 1857) was the Chief Factor of the Columbia Fur District of the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Vancouver. He was later known as the Father of Oregon for his role in assisting the American cause in the Oregon Country in the Pacific Northwest. In the late 1840s his general store in Oregon City was famous as the last stop on the Oregon Trail.

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is a United States National Historic Site located in the states of Washington and Oregon. The National Historic Site consists of two units, one located on the site of Fort Vancouverin modern-day Vancouver, Washington; the other being the former residence of John McLoughlin in Oregon City, Oregon. The two sites were separately given national historic designation in the 1940s.[4] The Fort Vancouver unit was designated a National Historic Site in 1961, and was combined with the McLoughlin House into a unit in 2003.

Visiting Oregon City, Oregon on a very rainy day. Started the day by grabbing breakfast at Yvonne's Restaurant. Then strolled through the downtown area and to the Oregon City Municipal Elevator, the only municipal elevator in the United States. We tried to go through the historic McLoughlin House Museum, but were unable to due to school field trips. We finished up our day in Oregon City at the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center.

Oregons most historic site not in Oregon!
Fort Vancouver was one of the most influential sites in Oregon's history. It was the center for the Hudson Bay Company fur trading operation in the Northwest. Dr. John McLoughlin, the father figure of our state, was in charge of the operation, established relationships with indians in the area and helped the early pioneers as they made their way to settle in the Oregon Territory.

John McLoughlin was the first Governor of Proto British Columbia after the UK extended governmental powers to the coast. He governed through the hybrid government/business the Honorable Hudson Bay Company, the direct predecessor to the BC government. It was similar to the Hon East India Company that governed India. He established a strong, multicultural society with close relations with First Nations through intermarriage. Because of his efforts, the US and ambivalent UK politicians would have to accept the reality of a Columbia on the Pacific Coast.
John McLoughlin hired and mentored James Douglas who is now considered the most important person in the creation of British Columbia.

Dr. John McLoughlin was for many years the chief factor of Fort Vancouver in what is now Vancouver, WA, and founder of Oregon City. Against the wishes of his superiors at the Hudson's Bay Company, McLoughlin showed great hospitality to American emigrants coming on the Oregon Trail and founder of Oregon City, the last major stop on the Oregon Trail. He later became an American citizen and mayor of Oregon City.

State of Oregon's Birthday Celebration Invitation
Put on your favorite pair of frontier pants and join us at the Oregon State Capitol on Saturday, February 17, between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Experience pioneer life during the state’s 159th birthday party. Pound on an anvil and test your blacksmithing skills, have a conversation with Dr. John McLoughlin as you arrive off the Oregon Trail, help build a log cabin and test your skills at many other stations. All activities are free, and you are invited!
There will be music, costumed historic interpreters, games, free birthday cake while supplies last, a pioneer wagon, a stagecoach, and photo opportunities with the Oregon Pioneer and Dr. John McLoughlin, the Father of Oregon.
Oregon Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting an interpretation of the historic vote at Champoeg by the House Chambers where the mural depicting that scene is hung. This is the 175th anniversary of that historic event, and of the Oregon Trail.
The newly preserved Oregon State Constitution will be on display in the East Galleria starting on the actual birthday, February 14th, and will be displayed through the celebration. Members of State Archives will be on hand to discuss the document and its history. There will be an exhibit of winning essays from the Salem Keizer School District “Why I Love Oregon” essay contest.

Dr. John McLoughlin, also known as the Father of Oregon for his role in shaping the Pacific Northwest, would've turned 235-years-old this October 19 -- and people are happy to celebrate.

Old Town Pizza is a landmark in Portland that has been serving tasty pies for many years. Thousands have visited this place from locals to celebrities, including Jay Leno, and Rachael Ray. Many claim this charming restaurant, located in a historic building, is haunted. The ghost of Nina has been seen here, and her presence felt by many.
Wearing a black dress, Nina wanders amongst guest and spends time in the basement. They say sometimes if you are really quiet you can hear her breathing. The restaurant is located in, what used to be a merchant motel and legend has it that Nina was found dead in the hotel. Rumor has it she was pushed to her death down this very elevator shaft and has remained here ever since.
It was a woman in a black dress, who was coming down the stairs, which was very odd because there was nobody in the restaurant except myself, and I saw somebody moving downstairs and went to go investigate, and there was no one there. The building itself sits on Portland's infamous Shaghai tunnels. They have an intriguing and tragic past, the history dates back about a hundred and fifty years.
When you enter the underground you start getting a cold dark feeling. The tunnels travel all around the waterfront areas in the city. They are made of basements and underground passageways that connect underneath places like bars and hotels. They have served many purposes but most noticeably to kidnap men and hold them until sold to ship captains passing through. There are many accounts of these tunnels being haunted.
Visitors of the area claim to hear voices and footsteps, and even see the occasional apparition down the tunnels. Along the way you will also get to see the many trapped doors that were used to capture their victims. They are also called dead falls, by the people at the time. This is a very mysterious piece of American history in a place that leaves a lasting impression. I am Mary Piercing, showing you Portland.

This is the time of year when we tend to notice an extra resident or two on campus. Like the impression of a woman who's often spotted in the window on the top floor of Waldo Hall, or the spectral lights and the spirit of a young girl seen sitting on the ends of beds in Sackett Hall. But this is all to be expected when OSU has the state's only designated National Historic District on a campus, and our school colors are black and orange.
