A Map at Simiane-La-Rotonde (France)
I made this clip in one of the main restored rooms at the castle at Simiane-La-Rotonde in the South of France.
For this visit, I arrived in Avignon and drove to Dauphin, where I stayed a week and then I stayed an additional week in Arles. This was not my first visit to the area -- I've been here at least two other times. This is the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence département in a part of France known generally as Provence. This area is either on or fairly near the Mediterranean sea, to the Southeast of the country somewhat.
This ancient, stone village has a Medieval castle, with a beautiful rotunda. There is an arompatherapy lab here, too.
As I visited various points around this part of France, I kept seeing the same coats of arms and ancient family names here and there. France was once a very different country from what it is today.
I am slightly disabled and was barely able to walk in this near-vertical village, so if you are mobility challenged, this might not be a doable place for you to see.
Occitane is still spoken in these parts, and many of the signs are bilingual.

Very, Very Vertical Simiane-La-Rotonde
I know, I know, I am getting older ... but really, I cannot easily remember a village I have ever visited, where I was stone sober and nearly fell backward as the incline on a street was so great. Such was the case in Simiane-La-Rotonde, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department of France.
Along where the Alps meet the Mediterranean, you can expect perched villages, put there for strategic and defensive purposes. This one boasts an extraordinary castle with a famous rotunda, and has an aromatherapy section. You can see there how things are distilled and learn about perfumes and such.
The ancient castle is lovely and if you can walk or climb up here, more the better I suppose, but it was a challenge for me.
Provence is a gorgeous region of France to the Southeast along the Mediterranean, known for sun, lavender and mistral winds. I took a train down from Paris to Avignon, rented a car, and stayed for a week in Dauphin, then moved over to Arles, in Bouches-du-Rhône. This was not my first visit to this area by any means, but I was struck by the romantic and historic aspects of these places. I recommend this for lovers or for those who love love, the arts, nature and beauty. Fall in love here, take someone you love, look for love. Love is in the air.

Simiane-La-Rotonde (Inside the Rotunda)
I really enjoyed this visit. It's a tiny perched village in Provence, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence département. This castle has origins going back ... well, we could say a thousand years and that wouldn't be stretching it much.
A German tour group was here so part of the noise is their guide explaining the attributes of the rotunda to them.
I once again visited the South of France (Provence) just recently, staying for a week in Dauphin and a week in Arles. The more I visit this region, not far from or directly on the Mediterranean sea, the more I learn and the more I like it. I tend to travel off-season a bit for better prices. This clip was made during the second week of September, 2013.

Provence is an enormous area in France to the Southeast. It is very favored. It tends to have hot and warm weather, sun and a lot of olives, lavender and grapes grow there. I rented a house in Dauphin for a week. It has six terraced gardens and is called Gîte Le Jardin. If you go to fancy areas a bit early or late in the high season, it costs less, so that is what I did. The house was under 300 euros for the week and sleeps six, so you can imagine the potential low cost for a family or a few friends who get along well. Dauphin is an ancient Medieval village, fortified, and this house is extraordinary and was all built by hand. I made this clip in Simiane-La-Rotonde in the region.
This is very near the Mediterranean sea and the mountains are the old Lubéron range and also the Alps. It is quite dramatic, very quiet and there is almost no light pollution at night so stargazer alert!
I like to be right on the sea the best but some people prefer it slightly inland like this. Dauphin actually is not convenient, no shops or services really, but Manes and Forcalquier are not far away. You have to plan and organize. The rented house has at least six terraced gardens. Almost half of it can be slid open to the sun and wind. There are even gardens of succulent plants on the roofs. I enjoyed listening to jazz music here, cooking, serving my husband espresso (he liked the third level terrace best) and hearing pretty much only some church bells and a rooster. At night, I think I saw spook lights in the distance and so did my spouse but we are not sure. This is the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence département.
This short clip was made in Simiane-La-Rotonde, which has an ancient castle.

FORCALQUIER PLAZA
I don't think I posted this clip on YouTube or Dailymotion yet. Forcalquier is in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence département in France, in the Southeast kind of. It is known as the city of four queens and has a rich history. I was living in a rented house in Dauphin and the nearest village with any semblance of a basic shop was in Manes, so came to Forcalquier a lot to get things. I tired to get up to the citadelle but they are just wild paths up there and it seemed to be closed.
This town has an excellent market every Monday morning, and most days of the week there are other markets. One day focused only on organic things grown locally. There is a free range pig grower near here, for example. This is a popular choice for a vacation rental, but prices are generally higher here, since pretty much all the services you might need are right in place. You could stay here and just walk out daily and get what you needed. That is a consideration.
This plaza was inaugurated in '10 and seems to incorporate the old lavoir. Places had lavoirs for doing the laundry annually, with ashes.
The city redid this part of town to be functional but to keep its old character, too. Public housing, subsidized housing, and artist's studios were included. As you can see, this is a peaceful place, and by keeping people here, this town is very vibrant. Right nearby, you can get used vinyl records, used books, cinemabilia, fancy pastry and chocolate, original art, food and excellent pottery. I wished I needed more pottery -- the stuff looked really good. Very functional and beautiful. Fabrics, French-milled soap, herbs and spices, and bakery were also excellent here in Forcalquier. You have a good selection of restaurants, from the elegant and pricey to the relaxed and quirky. I kept noticing things such as an English language school, a library, a good tourism center, and a lot of buildings which were a thousand years old.
I really like how this housing project turned out. It seems to have been a success and is yet another good aspect of Forcalquier. Bear in mind, this was not set up to be pricey market rate lodgings and spaces, this was meant to find a solution for regular people.
