Cambodia March 1999 - Nightline - Pailin: Boomtown'
Educational and Historical purposes only. From ABC News Nightline with Ted Koppel. Program aired at 11:30 pm US eastern time. Only Nightline under Ted Koppel and EP Tom Bettag would devote time to global issues; devote 30 minutes to Cambodia. No US broadcaster would do so today. This broadcast from March 18th, 1999 provides a look at what happened to Cambodia's murderous Khmer Rouge. In short, they retired, went west toward the Thai border and made money in gems, casinos, and prostitution. That's the way it was at the end of the decade - 20 years after the KR lost power in Phnom Penh.
CAMBODIA: PHNOM PENH: ASEAN DELEGATION MEET COUP VICTOR HUN SEN
Eng/Khmer/Nat
A delegation of ASEAN foreign ministers met with the Cambodian coup victor, Hun Sen, in Phnom Penh on Saturday.
They came away from the meetings with a general call for an end to the fighting in Cambodia's northwest - where Hun Sen's forces are launching a fierce assault against opponents.
And they seemed to hint that overthrown former co-Premier, Prince Ranariddh, might return to Cambodian politics in next May's nation-wide elections.
Meanwhile, human rights investigators are questioning Hun Sen's human rights record after the body of a murdered royalist soldier was discovered on Thursday.
The second meeting between the ASEAN diplomats and Cambodia's Second Prime Minister Hun Sen - now effectively the country's leader --broke up after nearly three hours.
The previous talks two weeks ago lasted half as long and left ASEAN doubtful of Cambodia joining the regional group in the short term.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with this follow-up visit.
Yet many questions about Cambodian political stability and relations with its ASEAN neighbors remain unanswered.
For his part, Hun Sen made it clear that he wants ASEAN to deliver a message to his political rival, Prince Ranariddh.
SOUNDBITE: (Khmer)
We also ask the ASEAN delegation to convey to Ranariddh that he put a complete end and a definitive end both politically and militarily with the Khmer Rouge.
SUPER CAPTION: Hun Sen, Cambodian Second Prime Minister
He followed that statement by pointing out that those with such links to the Khmer Rouge were barred from participating in politics.
As Indonesian Foreign Minister Ali Alatas entered the talks he appeared upbeat.
His group's last meeting with Hun Sen had ended on a frosty note, with the Cambodian strongman telling ASEAN to mind its own business.
However this meeting did produce some agreements.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Prime Minister Hun Sen's own words that he agreed with us, that the general elections would have no meaning if not participated in by all political forces, all political parties of Cambodia.
SUPERCAPTION Ali Alatas, Indonesian Foreign Minister
Alatas would not commit to whether the Prince could definitely take
part.
But he said the impression was that no one wants a continuation of the fighting.
The Thais have a particular interest in an end to the fighting - they are currently hosting thousands of Cambodian refugees, both civilian and military.
Back on the political front, ASEAN is urging another initiative, to try and legitimise the government that will sit until the May elections.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Yes we discussed as I said, we particularly asked him to perhaps make once again at the highest level an announcement making clear the policy of this government that indeed all these people are guaranteed a safe return, and are guaranteed the free participation in the political processes that are now continuing on in Phnom Penh.
SUPER CAPTION: Ali Alatas, Indonesian Foreign Minister
The ASEAN group has two or three visits yet to make. The first is expected to be to meet with Prince Ranariddh.
The second will be to report to other ASEAN foreign ministers.
Meanwhile human rights investigators found the body of a royalist soldier apparently murdered while in the custody of forces loyal to strongman Hun Sen.
The body of the man, who had been strangled, was found some 100 meters from the detention center for royalist troops after the bloody July sixth ouster of first Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh.
Hundreds of soldiers and officials loyal to Ranariddh were rounded up in the aftermath of his overthrow by Second Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Visit Silver Smith Village at Kandal Province & Anlong Chrey Dam at Kampong Speu Province Cambodia
We meet up for breakfast in Phnom Penh city and then traveled to the silver & cooper smith village at Kampong Luong commune, Ponhea Leu district, Kandal Province in Cambodia. We walked into a sculpture training center to check out what they do and what they have. Local people can get a free training there but they will charge some money for foreign students. They mostly made jewelries, things that made from silver & copper like horses, elephants, rabbits... After that we're on National road 5 and turn left after Oudong market to National Road 44 heading to Thpong district in Kampong Speu province. We visited Anlong Chrey Lake and Anlong Chrey Dam. Anlong Chrey is a very big lake located small part in Kampong Speu and biggest part in Kampong Chhnang province. After this lake and dam, we're on national road 44 heading to Amleang commune turning right to Chreav area. We bought natural organic guavas from the villager along the road and eat. The video ended there.

Meet Cambodia's young sexuality educators
Meet the activists that boost knowledge and bust sex myths. In Cambodia, as in many countries, information of sexuality, puberty and relationships is limited. Many questions go unanswered. Therefore RHAC's youth activists travel on their bikes to villages to talk with young people on relationships and sex. Everybody wins when people are empowered to lead free reproductive lives.
Reproductive Health Association of Cambodia (RHAC) is an IPPF member and a major provider of sexual and reproductive health services in Cambodia. The RHAC head office is based in Phnom Penh but the organisation works in 14 provinces all over Cambodia. Within the cooperation with RFSU, RHAC will implement two projects; one focusing on comprehensive sexuality education and one involving transgender/transsexual health services.

Travel to Bamboo Train Station at Banon Mountain in Battambang Province
It's a long way to go on Khmer New Year 2018. We traveled from Phnom Penh city to Battambang Province. Our destination is to go to Bamboo Train at Banon Mountain. It's about 293Km. from Krong Phnom Penh to Krong Battambang and another 5Km from Krong Battambang to the Bamboo train station at Phnom Banon resort. We had a break and had picnic lunch under a big tree shade behind the food market of the bamboo train station. After lunch and a short break, we walked to the bamboo train ticket booth. The ticket for adult is 10,000riel (USD2.50) and its free for children with hight below 1.2m. I flew my drone over the bamboo train station and the bamboo train road around the Banon mountain. This place is at Phnom Banon in Banon district, Battambang Province.

Phnom Penh WALKING TOUR: WAT BOTUM to RIVERSIDE Park (Budget Travel Cambodia){Phnom Penh, CAMBODIA}
Budget Travel Cambodia #6
A Phnom Penh walking tour from Wat Botum to Riverside Park displays urban architecture amidst a lot of downtown green space and fresh air.
Wat Botum Park possesses a floral display and an unusual monument of international friendship. Nearby is Riverside Park, a newly renovated boulevard containing street vendors and a walking path at Sisowath Quay.
When linked together, these public parks offer a terrific walking tour of Phnom Penh. All in all, a pleasant atmosphere for Matt to enjoy an urban hike.
And if it gets too hot, Ice cream vendors are aplenty.
Budget Travel Phnom Penh (Cambodia) #3
Welcome back to Phnom Penh
National Highway 5 or National Road No.5 (10005) is one of the national highways of Cambodia. With a length of 407.45 km (253.18 mi), it connects the capital of Phnom Penh with Thailand.[1] NH5 leaves Phnom Penh in a north to northwest direction, it first borders the Tonle Sap, three bridges the Chroy Changvar, the Prek Kdam and the Prek Pnov link the Est of the country. Then it moves away from the river/lake because the land there is flooded part of the year and it exits Kandal Province and traverses Kampong Chhnang Province from the junction with Road 51, north to Kampong Chhnang City, then northwest to Baribour District where it crosses into Pursat Province. From there, it skirts the Tonle Sap lake and continues west to Pursat town, the provincial capital. Leaving Pursat, NH5 again turns northwest and leads to Battambang Province, passing through another provincial capital at Battambang city and continuing on to Serei Saophoan District in Banteay Meanchey Province where it meets the terminus of NH6 and bends westward towards its own terminus at Poipet on the Thai border.
