The fine buildings of the Benedictine monastery of Melk majestically rise up from a plateau above the fascinating town on the River Danube. The elegant, yellow buildings of the monastery have become well-known far beyond Austria.The monastery’s eighteen hundred manuscripts are extremely valuable and although many treasures were destroyed by a devastating fire the oldest texts date back to the early 9th century. The 18th century marked the beginning of extensive construction work in the monastery that subsequently transformed the church into an enchanting example of Baroque design. The exquisite design of the church’s splendid interior was mostly the work of Italian architect, Antonio Beduzzi. But it is the remarkable architecture of the central Baroque buildings that have given Melk its reputation as being an icon of occidental monastery culture.

A Self-Guided Tour through the Beautiful Melk Abbey in Austria
The following video will highlight our self-guided walking tour around the Melk Abbey in Austria. Audio Tours are also available in different languages as well.
Unfortunately, you aren't allowed to video or photograph the beautiful rooms located in the Abbey or the Church, so we do our best to give you an idea of what you can expect via descriptions and postcards.
The Melk Abbey Church is stunning with I really loved the Melk Abbey Library and the Marble Hall is beautiful too. (If you are rushed with time, you could easily skip the gardens and the Observation deck)
Melk Abbey is a Benedictine abbey above the town of Melk.
You can easily visit the Melk Abbey from Vienna on a day trip or you might prefer to get up really early and tackle a combination Melk Abbey and Danube Valley day trip from Vienna instead. We loved visiting Dürnstein and Weißenkirchen (see videos of both on our YouTube channel).

Melk Abbey (German: Stift Melk) is a Benedictine abbey above the town of Melk, Lower Austria, Austria, on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube river, adjoining the Wachau valley. The abbey contains the tomb of Saint Coloman of Stockerau and the remains of several members of the House of Babenberg, Austria's first ruling dynasty.
The abbey was founded in 1089 when Leopold II, Margrave of Austria gave one of his castles to Benedictine monks from Lambach Abbey. A monastic school, the Stiftsgymnasium Melk, was founded in the 12th century, and the monastic library soon became renowned for its extensive manuscript collection. The monastery's scriptorium was also a major site for the production of manuscripts. In the 15th century the abbey became the centre of the Melk Reform movement which reinvigorated the monastic life of Austria and Southern Germany.
Today's Baroque abbey was built between 1702 and 1736 to designs by Jakob Prandtauer. Particularly noteworthy are the abbey church with frescos by Johann Michael Rottmayr (The triumph of the Monk), the library with countless medieval manuscripts, including a famed collection of musical manuscripts and frescoes by Paul Troger. the staircase between the library and the church, the pulpit, choir stalls, ceiling and cupola, the marble hall and the impressive baroque entrance leading up to the Prelate's courtyard.

Due to its fame and academic stature, Melk managed to escape dissolution under Emperor Joseph II when many other Austrian abbeys were seized and dissolved between 1780 and 1790. The abbey managed to survive other threats to its existence during the Napoleonic Wars, and also in the period following the Nazi Anschluss that took control of Austria in 1938, when the school and a large part of the abbey were confiscated by the state.
The school was returned to the abbey after the Second World War and now caters for nearly 900 pupils of both sexes.
Since 1625 the abbey has been a member of the Austrian Congregation, now within the Benedictine Confederation.
In his well-known novel The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco named one of the protagonists Adson von Melk as a tribute to the abbey and its famous library[citation needed].
Melk Abbey is also the metaphorical climax (a peak in a mountain range of discovery) of Patrick Leigh Fermor's autobiographical account of his walking tour across pre-WW II Europe in A Time of Gifts, which provides an lyrical, impressionistic description of the Abbey at that time

Dad and I head on with our roadtrip throug Austria and I have to say the Salzkammergut region is just so stunning. We made an unplaned stop at Traunsee which is a Lake, and took a walk in Traunkirchen an idyllic little village named after the lake.. or the other way around.
Moving on from there we drove out of the alps into a flatter landscape heading north east. I first heard of Melk Abbey through Souldtravelers3 and just thought it looked impressive and really wanted to check it out. Dad was up for it, so we made a stop at the Abbey on our way to Vienna.
Milk Abbey was founded in 1089 and is known for mainly 2 things. It’s frescoed ceilings and it’s extensive and impressive library.
The value of the books seems to be the reason why Melk Abbey was never seized or dissolved like many other Abbeys.
When the Abbey needed a renovation 20 years ago, they partially funded it by selling their famous Gutenberg bible to Harvard University.

The Wachau is the most famous stretch of the Danube in Austria, thirty six kilometres of romantic Danube Valley. Today’s townscape of Krems brings back bygone days and a particularly beautifully-preserved street complex. More than a hundred buildings provide an authentic picture of the Old Town. Today, the buildings’ façades and entrances are decorated in the traditional way and show off the town’s splendid Renaissance and mediaeval buildings. Sacred monuments recall the victory of Catholicism over Protestantism following two centuries of hostilities. Up the Danube to Dürnstein, a place with a long history and unique appearance. Arrival by boat is particularly scenic and a jetty leads to a wall from where a gate and steps provide access to the Old Town. The small mediaeval town clings picturesquely to the cliffs above the Danube, guarded by castle ruins and fortified walls. In Roman times, vines were cultivated in this picturesque area due to the region’s ideal growing conditions and Weissenkirchen has always been a wine-growing centre. The steep river valley and its terraced vine gardens enjoy a temperate climate. The small village has a long and dramatic history and its old houses and lanes are indelibly evocative of the past. Spitz is picturesquely embedded within its surrounding vineyards, and the legendary Thousand Bucket Mountain is an imposing sight. It was not only due to wine but also the trading of both wood and salt that Spitz attained an important position in the Middle Ages and at the beginning of modern times. Since the year 2000, the Wachau has been a World Cultural Region, a gem on the long route of the Danube, a picturesque river valley where both mediaeval and Baroque create an exceptional atmosphere, and nature, the perfect setting.
