Chinese V-Day Ceremony Begins with 70-Gun Salute
A flag-raising ceremony and a 70-gun salute opened a grand ceremony held at Tian'anmen Square in Beijing on Thursday morning to mark the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the world anti-Fascist war.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, together with 24 heads of state and government, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Republic of Korea President Park Geun-hye and South African President Jacob Zuma, stood on the Tian'anmen Rostrum overlooking the packed square.
Other dignitaries on the rostrum were government representatives from 19 countries, heads of 10 international organizations, including United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and six former world leaders, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and former Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama.
At 10:00, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang announced the beginning of the ceremony.
The ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the world anti-Fascist war now begins, announced Li.
The 70-gun salute was fired by 56 guns placed in the southern part of the square. The number of 56 represents 56 ethnic groups of China.
The gun salute ceremony was performed by the Gun Salute Battalion of the People's Armed Police Force Beijing Contingent, who served several National Day celebrations as well as the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
Amid the 70-gun salute, the guard of honor carrying a furled national flag walked down from the platform of the Monument to the People's Heroes in the center of the square, and marched northward on a red carpet toward the national flag post.
While the five-star flag was being hoisted, the crowd sang the national anthem to the accompaniment of a 1,200-member military band and a 1,200-member choir.
A total of 12,000 troops, 500 pieces of military equipment, and nearly 200 aircraft will be reviewed by President Xi Jinping in the coming hour.

San Francisco's homage to 'comfort women'
San Francisco plans to erect statues of 'comfort women' as grim reminders of the terrible fate of sex slaves under Japan's wartime aggression. On Monday, the San Francisco Arts Commission gave the final approval to a planned memorial to the sex slaves, which will be placed in the city's Chinatown. Statues of four women will be placed in September, representing those who were forced into sex slavery. Japan strongly lobbied against the plan, but Tokyo's opposition fell short in the face of anger over the fate of war-era sex slaves. Are these statues a forceful reminder of a past that wartime aggressors simply want to forget? Or are they a warning to future generations of the horrors of war? The answers from Joseph Yi of Seoul's Hanyang University and Kurt Piehler from Florida State University.

STORYLINE:
Chinese legislature chairman Li Peng continued his visit to the Philippines capital, Manila, on Friday.
In the morning, he placed a wreath at the foot of the monument to national hero Jose Rizal.
Li Peng is visiting the islands at the invitation of the Philippines' speaker of the House of Representatives, Jose de Venecia.
Li is scheduled to meet President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Saturday, as well as de Venecia and other congressmen.
During his stay, Li is to discuss proposed Chinese government assistance worth 100 (m) million US dollars to help modernise agriculture and fisheries in the Philippines, including a project to develop better rice seeds.
He is also expected to announce Chinese help in modernising an old commuter and cargo railway system in the northern Philippines.
Li arrived in Manila on Thursday, with his wife and about 170 delegates, to a red carpet welcome by lines of women in traditional garb chanting welcome in Mandarin Chinese.
He will stay until Sunday before flying to Australia.
But not everyone is happy with his visit.
About 50 protesters staged a rally near Rizal's monument in Manila to tell Li that he is not welcome in the Philippines.
The protesters denounced what they called the Chinese invasion of the Spratlys - disputed islands in the South China Sea.
The islands are being claimed in part or in whole by the Philippines, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei.
China has built some structures in some parts of the Spratlys.
Chinese and Philippine officials are also trying to hasten the release of 122 Chinese fishermen who have pleaded guilty to charges of illegal entry and illegal fishing in Philippine waters.
The fishermen, arrested separately over the past six months, are being held in jail in Palawan province, southwest of Manila.
The waters west of Palawan, where many Chinese fishermen have been apprehended, are part of the South China Sea, which include the disputed Spratly islands.
Li is also expected to discuss the plight of 180-thousand Filipino workers in Macau and Hong Kong.

China's Comfort Women
Follow us on TWITTER:
Like us on FACEBOOK:
On Oct. 12th a 90-year-old woman Yin Yulin, from Zheng
jia Zhai, Yangqu County, Taiyuan city, Shanxi Province, died.
The old woman's death was regrettable as she was arrested by the
Japanese army to act as comfort women during Japan invading China.
From 1992, she and other fifteen female victims come forward
to prosecute the Japanese government.
They accused the Japanese army of bestial crimes.
However, the Japanese court gave no compensation.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) stood by as its own
Citizens made efforts to pursue justice.
In the spring of 1942, the Japanese officers and soldiers broke
into Yin Yulin's home in the Yu country, Shanxi provinces.
They arrested her and her sister together.
The two sisters were gang-raped by the Japanese soldiers.
The two sisters and other women who were caught were often
forced with bayonets to the towers to act as comfort women.
This lasted more than a year.
Known as the first person of Chinese Folk comfort women
investigation Zhang Shuangbing told NTDTV that he had surveyed more than 100 Chinese comfort women.
From 1992, in 10 years, there were three batches of 16 female
victims prosecuting the Japanese government in Japanese courts.
Through three courts, the case was sentenced in 2007.
Teacher in Shanxi Province, Zhang Shuangbing: In the end,
the Japanese court's decision admitted that the comfort women stories were true,
but offered no compensation. We didn't think
it was a proper judgment, while being a barbaric judgment.
It not only can't convince the victims and their families,
but also can't convince the suffering people.
The Japanese courts pronounced no compensation
because statutory limitations had passed.
The individual weren't allowed prosecuting the government.
Zhang Shuangbing: On the statute of limitations-because
after the war, China and Japan were in a Cold War---
they did not set up diplomatic relations
so there are no conditions to prosecute.
Also, as private citizens can't prosecute the government, we
think, since the Japanese government commanded the invasion of China,
why your government can bully people, but the people
are not allowed to prosecute Japanese government?
Two Japanese non-governmental organizations, Japan Shanxi
Identify Committee and Japan Photo Exhibition Committee sent a telegram of condolences to Yin Yulin.
They said: Aunt's wish to get 'the Japanese government's
formal apology and compensation, to restore the reputation'
before her death failed to achieve this and we feel very guilty.
After Yin Yulin death, in Shanxi, only six comfort women
living witnesses remained.
While comfort women are seeking Japanese government
compensation, the CCP remained silent.
They didn't make representations to the Japanese government.
The Chinese folk Diaoyu Islands Federation members Feng
Jinghua said he could not understand the practice of the CCP.
Diaoyu personage Feng Jinghua: Why does China not do
these things? We are also very puzzled, we are very depressed.
We also hope that the relevant state departments
pay attention to this matter.
The victims are involved very widely, once it is mentioned
Along with such issues as labor, the chemical weapons issue,
the comfort women issue, then some people might think
that it will destroy Sino-Japanese relations and Sino-Japanese friendship.
Feng Jinghua said that every year, Diaoyu personage visit
the old people, but their number decreased every year.
In their view, the CCP and the Japanese government
hope these people to die as soon as possible.
They regard those people as a burden, especially the CCP.
They are blindly waiting, watching them silently die. They have
no living benefits such as pension and medical relief, either.
Feng jinghua: When we denounced the Japanese,
we should reflect on our Chinese people ourselves.
Why have we Chinese victims lived so miserably?
Why have Japanese victimizer lived so well?
I also have seen the Japanese soldiers, including victims
of the Hiroshima bomb; the Japanese government took good care of them.
But how are our Chinese victims treated? These old people
have no health insurance, no other insurance.
This is the result of our current social situation in China.
By contrast, on Oct.1st, for the first time, the South Korean
government proposed the issue of comfort women in the keynote speech of the General Assembly of the U.N.
On Aug. 30th the Korean Constitutional Tribunal claimed
judgment on the issue of former comfort women prosecuting the government for compensation.
The judgment pronounced that the Government violated
relevant provisions of the Constitution and
no serious negotiations with the Japanese government
in dealing with the former comfort women.
Subsequently, the South Korean government asked

SUMMARY
=======
Chiang Kai-shek (; 31 October 1887 – 5 April 1975), also known as Generalissimo Chiang or Chiang Chungcheng and romanized as Chiang Chieh-shih or Jiang Jieshi, was a politician and military leader who served as the leader of the Republic of China between 1928 and 1975, first in mainland China until 1949 and then in exile in Taiwan. He was recognized by much of the world as the head of the legitimate government of China until the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Chiang was an influential member of the Kuomintang (KMT), the Chinese Nationalist Party, as well as a close ally of Sun Yat-sen's. Chiang became the Commandant of the Kuomintang's Whampoa Military Academy and took Sun's place as leader of the KMT following the Canton Coup in early 1926. Having neutralized the party's left wing, Chiang then led Sun's long-postponed Northern Expedition, conquering or reaching accommodations with China's many warlords. From 1928 to 1948, Chiang served as chairman of the National Government of the Republic of China (ROC). Chiang was socially conservative, promoting traditional Chinese culture in the New Life Movement. Unable to maintain Sun's good relations with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Chiang purged them in a massacre at Shanghai and repressed uprisings at Kwangtung (Canton region) and elsewhere.
At the onset of the Second Sino-Japanese War, which later became the Chinese theater of World War II, Manchurian warlord Zhang Xueliang kidnapped Chiang and obliged him to establish a Second United Front with the CCP. After the defeat of the Japanese, the American-sponsored Marshall Mission, an attempt to negotiate a coalition government, failed in 1946. The Chinese Civil War resumed, with the CCP led by Mao Zedong defeating the KMT and declaring the People's Republic of China in 1949. Chiang's government and army retreated to Taiwan, where Chiang imposed martial law and persecuted critics in a period known as the White Terror. After evacuating to Taiwan, Chiang's government continued to declare its intention to retake mainland China. Chiang ruled Taiwan securely as President of the Republic of China and General of the Kuomintang until his death in 1975, just one year before Mao's death.Like Mao, Chiang is regarded as a controversial figure. Supporters credit him with playing a major part in the Allied victory of World War II and unifying the nation and a national figure of the Chinese resistance against Japan as well as his staunch anti-Soviet and anti-communist stance. Detractors and critics denounce him as a dictator at the front of an authoritarian autocracy who suppressed and purged opponents and critics and arbitrarily incarcerated those he deemed as opposing to the Kuomintang among others.
Poland Marks 70th Anniversary of End of WWII
Poland marked the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II (WWII) on Thursday midnight (local time) with a ceremony on the Westerplatte Peninsula in Gdansk.
Among those present at the ceremony were Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, European Council President Donald Tusk, who is Polish, and the presidents of Ukraine and several Central European countries.
Half an hour before the ceremony started, blue light beams illuminated a monument to the Polish defenders of Westerplatte to the playing of the Polish national anthem and a gun salute. Polish soldiers laid wreaths and singers sang songs in memory of the deceased soldiers.
A participant at the ceremony said the celebration is actually a lesson, which united all people and took them to the beginning of WWII and gathered necessary information about the place.
The Westerplatte peninsula is considered to be a place that witnessed the first battle of WWII in 1939. Exactly 70 years after Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945, Poland continues to hold grand event to remember the soldiers' sufferings and celebrate the victory.
In the Red Square in Russian capital Moscow, another ceremony will be held on Saturday. Many heads of state and politicians have been invited to the ceremony, including Ban Ki-moon and Chinese President Xi Jinping. More on:
