Hollande opens Jewish memorial centre in Drancy
France has inaugurated a memorial and museum to honour the memory of Jews deported during the second world war.
President François Hollande went to Drancy, north of Paris, the transit hub for the deportees. A lone railway carriage already sits there in memory of the 65,000 Jews who passed through the town. Only 2000 survived.
Today what is important is to transmit the message, that's the spirit of this memorial. The transmission of testimony that's the future of memory, said Hollande.
For decades after the second world war an ashamed France refused to acknowledge the role the Vichy republic willingly played in the Nazi's anti-semitic nightmare.
Only in the 1990s did President Chirac recognise, and apologise, and steps were taken to ensure the Holocaust was included in school programmes. Several monuments were also erected.
The leader of France's Front Nationale Marine le Pen, out in the cold somewhat since the May elections, got a foot in the news by saying that if the Muslim veil were banned in public places, then so should the Jewish Kippa, or any other religious clothing. Her outburst was widely condemned by the mainstream parties and religious groups.

France: Macron warns against 'moral weakening' as he visits Shoah Memorial in Paris
French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron warned against moral weakening, relativism and negationism after he visited the Shoah Memorial in Paris, Sunday.
He stated, French people have the duty to remember and the duty that never again will there be this moral weakening, which could tempt some people, [or] relativism which could tempt others, the negationism which some take refuge in. Because what happened is unforgettable and unpardonable, it should never happen again.
SOT, Emmanuel Macron, presidential candidate (French): Today we have a duty which is double: the duty to remember, as Simone Veil already said - her name is engraved here among all those who were deported - and the duty that never again will there be this moral weakening, which could tempt some people, [or] relativism which could tempt others, the negationism which some take refuge in. Because what happened is unforgettable and unpardonable, it should never happen again.

Macron visits holocaust memorial, makes address
(30 Apr 2017) Amid worries about rising nationalism, French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron visited the Holocaust Memorial in Paris on Sunday with a sombre message: never again.
Excitement at his appearance was mixed with sorrowful remembrance as he walked past panels bearing the names of tens of thousands of French Jews deported to their death in Nazi camps.
Holocaust survivors and children of its victims were among those present.
Macron looked at documentation showing the collaboration by French authorities with the Nazis.
It was the second time in three days that Macron visited a site tied to France's wartime history. He is seeking to remind voters of the anti-Semitic past of his rival Marine Le Pen's far right National Front party. The two face off in a 7 May runoff.
Inside the memorial he was shown around by Francois Heilbronn, historian and vice president of the memorial, and Memorial director Jacques Fredj. They showed him lists of Jews slated for deportation, and he lay flowers in the crypt before signing the guest book.
At the memorial of martyrs, he said that he would concede nothing to Le Pen, who had accused him of exploiting the Holocaust for electoral purposes.
