GOODworks: Big Bugs at Memphis Botanic Garden
The Memphis Botanic Garden is excited to announce the arrival of
David Rogers’ Big Bugs at the Garden on September 16, 2017. Representing eight different species, the traveling art exhibit, presented by Terminix®, will feature ten giant wooden bug sculptures towering up to 18 feet tall. Big Bugs will inhabit all 96 acres of the Botanic Garden through January 1, 2018.
The sculptures will be set around the Garden in environments where each insect would naturally be found. The exhibit will not include any fenced or blocked off areas, allowing guests an opportunity to experience the sculptures from all angles. Unique nighttime lighting and sculpture positioning promises to make this exhibit a truly visual experience.
“The Memphis Botanic Garden is hosting Big Bugs at the Garden in an effort to raise awareness of the Garden and our programs, to drive more attendance and increase membership ranks—particularly among families with young children,” said Mike Allen, executive director of the Memphis Botanic Garden. “It’s the first traveling exhibit we’ve hosted, and the opportunity to work with Terminix made for a great partnership. We’re also appreciative of International Paper, The Speer Charitable Trust, Orion Federal Credit Union and AutoZone for their underwriting support.”
“The Big Bugs exhibit, in partnership with the Memphis Botanic Garden, is the perfect opportunity to support our local community and continue our commitment to the study and research of entomology,” said Tiffany Matthews, corporate communications manager of Terminix. “We are thrilled to welcome the exhibit to our city and participate in this unique educational program.”
The exhibit will also host local school field trips and a series of events to continue providing insect and science education. “There will be ‘date night’ activities, tram tours, ‘brown bag’ educational programs on home gardening, and a broad outreach to teachers and schoolchildren from all neighborhoods of Memphis and Shelby County,” said Gina Harris, director of education and events for the Botanic Garden. “There really is something for all insect enthusiasts.”
David Rogers’ Big Bugs has been touring public and private botanical gardens since 1994, educating on conservation and preservation of the planet. The exhibit has been featured at the United States National Arboretum, the United States Botanic Garden and Disney World’s Epcot Center.
