The Redwood Highway - Skunk Train & Willits California
ROAD TRIP! Much like old Route 66, The Redwood Highway, US-101, was covered with Epic Roadside Attractions, old Auto Courts, Motels, Historic sites, Abandoned buildings, old filling stations, and so much more!
California's Redwood highway travels through the far northern part of the state, North of San Francisco and up to the Oregon border. On this stretch, We visit Willits, California, the Gateway to the Redwoods and ride the historic California Western Railway, or The Skunk Train from the golden hills to some of the big trees, as well as look into some of the epic roadside history of a town that millions of people get gas in without realizing that this town has some Epic Roadside history!!
This is only one part of many Redwood Highway Adventures - each different! There are some amazing Roadside attractions, natural scenes, and historic then-and-now adventures ahead! While there are far less Redwood Highway travelers than Route 66 travelers, it contains much of the same kind of history and architecture, as well as having the added bonus of the world's tallest living thing, the California GIANT Redwoods. Although there are eco-tourists, crusty hippies, and family road trippers passing through, Hopefully these videos will encourage more Route 66 style Historic road travelers to take up the redwood highway challenge. The more visitors who ask these places about their history, leave tips and suggestions for old motels and businesses to embrace their history, etc etc, the more often these old highways preserve and restore that history. 5. Consent Calendar
a. minutes for March 13, 2019
b. Resolution authorizing amendment no. 2 to the Total Service Agreement with Conduent Enterprise Solutions, LLC
c. Resolution Awarding a contract to Striping Graphics, Inc., in an amount not to exceed $51,290 for the 2019 Annual Striping Project (Project No. 2019-06) and Authorize the City manager to Execute the Contract and Approve Change Orders up to a Cumulative Total of 10% of the Total Contract Amount.
d. Letter of Supoort for the Transfer of the The Benbow Property to the Mendocino County Resource Conservation District (MCRDC).
Consent Calendar was approved with a Motion by Vice-Mayor Stranske, seconded by Council member Strong.
10. Department Recommendations

California Drives - Redwood Forest Institute | Willits, CA USA
The Redwood Forest Institute is seeking caretakers. My husband and I drove 12 hours from south of Los Angeles to the 400-acre private property to meet the owner and discuss a potential future together, caring for the property and helping the nonprofit with its mission to provide access to the redwoods for education and recreation.
Although we will not be moving there, we will be volunteering for Redwood Forest Institute in technical, administrative, marketing, and fundraising capacities.
You will find quite a bit of information about the Redwood Forest Institute, and its founder Charles Bello, already on YouTube & Google, including several interviews and videos about him, his love for the trees, and what he's done since he purchased 400 acres in 1968.
What you won't find is a video of the drive down Immulco Road. In our video, you can experience it as we did the first time. After over 10 hours driving up from south of Los Angeles, this is the final hour of the drive, in the middle of nowhere, down more than 11 miles of an old dirt logging road. Enjoy!
Reminder: This is a private road and you are only allowed to drive on it by permission.
Riding the Historic Skunk Train in Fort Bragg
The Skunk Train has been a staple of the Fort Bragg and Mendocino area for more than a century. This train was used for logging, but now it is used to transport passengers from the coast into the redwoods.

The Cedar Creek Grist Mill is a historical grist mill located in Woodland, Washington listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The mill was built in 1876 by George W. Woodham family and A.C. Reid. The remains of the dam which supplied water to the mill were removed in 1950s. The mill was restored to working condition in the 1980s and now operates as a museum.[2] Wikipedia

The SKUNK Train! - California Western Railroad
All aboard! Take a ride through the coastal Redwood trees of California on the Skunk Train! We will travel to Fort Bragg, California for a ride on the California Western Railroad. Located about 150 miles north of the San Francisco Bay Area, this train passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. Watch the train as it travels from Fort Bragg on the coast to North Spur, where the locomotive is turned around. On the return trip, you will see scenes from the train as it passes along the Noyo River and between tall stands of redwood trees.

Ep. 9 Skunk Train through the Redwoods! Life Goals
FIRST TRAIN RIDE EVER! Mike and I boarded the Skunk Train in Willits and rode 2 hours east to Northspur, California. We thoroughly enjoyed the onboard entertainment and standing inside a HUGE redwood tree.

Who are we?
We are best friends who love to travel. Mike and I met during our first year in college while living in Ohio. Ten years later, we quit our jobs and decided to travel together full-time.
What do we do?
We travel full-time! Our first goal was to travel the United States in a camper. We bought a 1979 Class A RV and headed straight for the Florida Keys. Since then, we’ve been through several vehicle and camper changes and are currently living in a 2008 Prowler travel trailer and driving a 2017 Ram 2500. We’ve driven across the U.S. twice and are currently located in Northern California.
Our second life goal is to travel by sailboat. We are currently researching, learning, and saving up to complete this goal. Our thoughts right now include moving back to the Florida Keys while we gain sailing experience and then take off to circumnavigate the globe.
Our third life goal is to travel by airplane. We plan to work on our pilot’s licenses and continue to travel by air.
Why do we do what we do
Freedom: We have total control over our time. We are free to travel where, when, and how we want. We also have the freedom to pick our work and vacation schedules.
Experience: We get out of the routine life and enjoy different scenery. We meet different people, grow, experience, learn, and challenge ourselves in every way possible.
Change in mindset: Fears seem to disappear. We have the mentality that we are only going to be in one place for a short time, so we take advantage of everything that place has to offer.
We want to live a life that is much more meaningful to us.
How do we do it?
While traveling the country, I currently work as a traveling physical therapist with a travel healthcare agency, and Mike finds different trade jobs on the road. My work assignments are 3 months each, with freedom to pick the locations and take as much time off as we want between assignments. We stay in campgrounds while we are working for convenience, and boondock on our time off.
We are currently in transition to part two. We are saving up for our future sailboat and sailing life. Plans will evolve as we continue to research and learn about sailing.

Amie and I got a chance to ride the Skunk Train last week and while we were there we found out that they have a new experience called railbikes which are used to bike ride on the train tracks. It was one of the most fun things we did on our trip and if you get up to Fort Bragg, check it out.
