Mercedes Leadership Changes
VANCE -- Officials from across the state were on hand for a leadership change at the Mercedes Benz U.S. International plant in Vance.
It was a bittersweet day as Markus Schafer handed over the steering wheel to Jason Hoff as the new President and CEO of the North American Plant.
Hoff has worked for Mercedes for 18 years, starting his career at the Vance plant. He spent the last two and a half years in Germany working with Procurement Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans at Mercedes headquarters. But he says Alabama is home.
It's a homecoming for me, Hoff said to workers and media on Thursday. It's a homecoming back to Alabama and my family is really happy to be back.
The Plant has grown about five percent each year, so as Hoff takes the reins to the MBUSI company, expectations are high.
We've got a very challenging two and a half years ahead of us, maybe the most challenging two years that this company has ever seen... some that are either going to make or break us, Hoff said. I know that Germany is counting on us, but I also know that we're ready for it.
Workers at the MBUSI plant have a 99.4% attendance rate. That is something Governor Robert Bentley says is instrumental in getting the business world's attention.
I have used that number there in speeches all over the state, all over the country, and all over the world, because I've been bragging on you, because you are the ones that help me recruit jobs, Bentley said.
Another state leader, Alabama head football coach Nick Saban has also taken notice of the MBUSI work ethic. He was in attendence Thursday, telling the crowd that he chose to come speak because, I wanted to honor the folks that have made this place special.
It makes living in Tuscaloosa, being a citizen of the state of Alabama something that we can be proud of, he said.
The day was also about good byes, as Markus Schafer addressed his Alabama workers for the last time.
I can tell you I'm going to miss you, he told the crowd of employees. I'm going to miss you and there's no team like this team here in Alabama, like Mercedes... and as we say here, only one team wins and that's really my belief, thank you very much for coming today, I wish you good luck and keep up the good work, and God bless you, thank you very much.
With that, Schafer was left to a standing ovation as he waved to the plant workers and turned to hug his management team on stage. Schafer will now become the new head of production planning for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars at their headquarters in Germany.

Mercedes-Benz M-Class
The Mercedes-Benz M-Class is a mid-size luxury crossover sport utility vehicle (SUV), first offered in 1997 as a 1998 model, and built by the German automaker Mercedes-Benz. Gradually, the M-Class became a sales success in the United States and Mexico. In terms of size, it is slotted in between the smaller GLK-Class (based on the C-Class) and the larger GL-Class, with which it shares platforms. For a short time, between the years 1999 and 2002, the M-Class was also built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, for the European market, before all production moved to the U.S. plant near Vance, Alabama. From late 2012, the M-Class was also assembled at new plants in Pune, India and Wanaherang, Indonesia.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
