MESQUITE FLAT SAND DUNES! DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, CA.
Mesquite Flat Dunes
These dunes are the best known and easiest to visit in the national park. Located in central Death Valley near Stovepipe Wells, access is from Hwy. 190 or from the unpaved Sand Dunes Road. Although the highest dune rises only about 100 feet, the dunes actually cover a vast area. This dune field includes three types of dunes: crescent, linear, and star shaped. Polygon-cracked clay of an ancient lakebed forms the floor. Mesquite trees have created large hummocks that provide stable habitats for wildlife.

Landscape Photography in Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes | Death Valley National Park
In this weeks video, we explore the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park. After leaving Zabriskie Point with heavy gusts I was expecting there to be some amazing windy conditions for photographing the dunes in the morning and after a sleepless night with howling winds at our campsite, I headed down to the dunes for sunrise. Upon arrival, the wind had completely dissipated and it was a beautifully calm morning, unfortunately, with no wind... regardless I headed on out to capture some of my favorite dune shots and had some fun doing so!

Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes - Death Valley National Park, USA.
Death Valley National Park is in between California & Nevada border. It is one of the unique national parks with so many attractions. This is the Hottest, Driest, and Lowest National Park in the US. This is the short video of Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. Tawny dunes smoothly rise nearly 100 ft (30 m) from Mesquite Flat.
I also visited Artists Palette.
Virtual Hike: Sunset at Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park
Located in the near dead-center of Death Valley National Park, the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes are the most well-known and easily accessible sand dunes in the entire park. Visitors will find the sand dunes parking area along Highway 190, 2.2 miles east of Stovepipe Wells.
While there's no formal trail to the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, these 100-foot dunes are easy to find. It's a cross-country walk from the parking lot across the the dune field to highest dunes, about a two-mile hike each way.
The dunes are at their most beautiful (and the temperatures most bearable) in early morning or during a full-moon hike.
Expect big crowds most times of the year at the Mesquite Flat Dunes as this area is a fun place to explore with children. Park your car at the end of Sand Dune Road and you can join the countless others who come here to climb up and around the crescent, linear, and star-shaped dunes.
Despite its popularity, Mesquite Flats is not a playground. As the Park Service points out, three of the 18 heat-related deaths in Death Valley recorded since 2000 occurred here. Sand hills quickly block views of the parking area and it's easy to become disoriented: keep your car in your line of sight. Although the tallest dunes appear to be close, they are actually over a mile away: do not try walking to the high dunes in the summer heat.

Death Valley National Park, California - Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes HD (2016)
The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes are at the northern end of the valley floor and are nearly surrounded by mountains on all sides. Due to their easy access from the road and the overall proximity of Death Valley to Hollywood, these dunes have been used to film sand dune scenes for several movies including films in the Star Wars series. The largest dune is called Star Dune and is relatively stable and stationary because it is at a point where the various winds that shape the dunes converge. The depth of the sand at its crest is 130–140 feet (40–43 m) but this is small compared to other dunes in the area that have sand depths of up to 600–700 feet (180–210 m) deep.
The primary source of the dune sands is probably the Cottonwood Mountains which lie to the north and northwest. The tiny grains of quartz and feldspar that form the sinuous sculptures that make up this dune field began as much larger pieces of solid rock.
In between many of the dunes are stands of creosote bush and some mesquite on the sand and on dried mud, which used to cover this part of the valley before the dunes intruded (mesquite was the dominant plant here before the sand dunes but creosote does much better in the sand dune conditions).

From Wikipedia:
Death Valley National Park is an American national park that straddles the California—Nevada border, east of the Sierra Nevada. The park boundaries include Death Valley, the northern section of Panamint Valley, the southern section of Eureka Valley, and most of Saline Valley. The park occupies an interface zone between the arid Great Basin and Mojave deserts, protecting the northwest corner of the Mojave Desert and its diverse environment of salt-flats, sand dunes, badlands, valleys, canyons, and mountains. Death Valley is the largest national park in the lower 48 states, and the hottest, driest and lowest of all the national parks in the United States. The second-lowest point in the Western Hemisphere is in Badwater Basin, which is 282 feet (86 m) below sea level. Approximately 91% of the park is a designated wilderness area. The park is home to many species of plants and animals that have adapted to this harsh desert environment. Some examples include creosote bush, bighorn sheep, coyote, and the Death Valley pupfish, a survivor from much wetter times. UNESCO included Death Valley as the principal feature of its Mojave and Colorado Deserts Biosphere Reserve in 1984.
A series of Native American groups inhabited the area from as early as 7000 BC, most recently the Timbisha around 1000 AD who migrated between winter camps in the valleys and summer grounds in the mountains. A group of European-Americans, trapped in the valley in 1849 while looking for a shortcut to the gold fields of California, gave the valley its name, even though only one of their group died there. Several short-lived boom towns sprang up during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to mine gold and silver. The only long-term profitable ore to be mined was borax, which was transported out of the valley with twenty-mule teams. The valley later became the subject of books, radio programs, television series, and movies. Tourism expanded in the 1920s when resorts were built around Stovepipe Wells and Furnace Creek. Death Valley National Monument was declared in 1933 and the park was substantially expanded and became a national park in 1994.
The valley is actually a graben with the oldest rocks being extensively metamorphosed and at least 1.7 billion years old. Ancient, warm, shallow seas deposited marine sediments until rifting opened the Pacific Ocean. Additional sedimentation occurred until a subduction zone formed off the coast.
In 2013, Death Valley National Park was designated as a dark sky park by the International Dark-Sky Association.
