Messines Mine Craters - Part 1
Part 1 of a 3 part series. 7th June 1917 saw the detonation of 19 mines in Belgium at the start of the Messines attack. The explosion was heard in London.
This short film examines the St Yves sector and its remaining three craters.

In the early morning of June 7 the area around Messines Ridge is shattered by huge explosions beneath the German positions. Miners and sappers had dug tunnels and filled them up with tons of explosives. Up to 10,000 German soldiers are killed in this inferno. At the same time, the Romanian Army seems to be in shape for an attack against the Germans again and the 10th Battle of the Isonzo continues.

A ceremony has taken place to the mark the centenary of the Battle of Messines Ridge in Belgium. Irish nationalist and unionist fought and died alongside each other in World War One.

On 7 June 2017, New Zealand will commemorate its involvement in the Battle of Messines in
Mesen/Messines, Belgium with a National Commemorative Service at Messines Ridge Cememtery at
8.00am and a Sunset Ceremony at the New Zealand Battlefield Memorial at 7.30pm.
The services are open to the public, regardless of nationality, and are not ticketed.
Information for those wishing to attend the services can find more information on the WW100

For two years Australian, British, and Canadian miners had engaged in subterranean warfare, digging an intricate tunnel system under the enemy's front line. The Allies used these tunnels to further tactical advantage, packing massive charges of the
explosive ammonal to obliterate enemy defences. The main Australian effort was at Hill 60, where Tunnelling Companies worked for months, reinforcing and protecting the large mines in their zone. The professionalism and skill of all the Allies was
demonstrated by the Germans' inability to locate mines.
The New Zealand National Service Commemorating the Battle of Messines
On 7 June 2017, New Zealand marked its involvement in the Battle of Messines in Mesen/Messines, Belgium.
The New Zealand National Service commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Messines took place at 8.00am in the Messines Ridge British Cemetery.
The Official Party included Her Excellency Dame Patsy Reddy, Governor-General of New Zealand, His Excellency Sir David Gascoigne, His Excellency Mr Gregory Andrews, New Zealand Ambassador to Belgium, Mr Steven Vandeput, Belgian Minister of Defence, Mr Geert Bourgeois, Minister-President of the Government of Flanders, Mr Carl Decaluwe, Governor West Flanders, Mr Sandy Evrard, Burgemeester of Mesen/Messines, General Marc Compernol, Belgian Chief of Defence Force, Vice Admiral Mark Mellett, Irish Chief of Defence Force, Major General Tim Gall, Commander Joint Forces New Zealand, and Sir Tim Laurence, Vice Chairman of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
The service was conducted by the New Zealand Defence Force and narrated by Ms Nicole Jamieson.
The New Zealand Government thanks the following for their support and assistance with the New Zealand Services to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Messines: the Government of Belgium, the Government of Flanders, the province of West Flanders, the Belgian Ministry of Defence, the Mayor and community of Mesen/Messines, the Police of Mesen/Messines and Ieper, the New Zealand Pilgramage Trust and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

The New Zealand Sunset Ceremony for the Battle of Messines
On 7 June 2017, New Zealand marked its involvement in the Battle of Messines in Mesen/Messines, Belgium.
The New Zealand Sunset Ceremony for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Messines took place at 7.30pm at the New Zealand Battlefield Memorial in New Zealand Park, Mesen/Messines.
The Official Party included Her Excellency Dame Patsy Reddy, Governor-General of New Zealand, His Excellency Sir David Gascoigne, His Excellency Mr Gregory Andrews, New Zealand Ambassador to Belgium, Mr Sandy Evrard, Burgemeester of Mesen/Messines and Major General Tim Gall, Commander Joint Forces New Zealand.
The ceremony was narrated by Ms Nicola Jamieson and conducted by the New Zealand Defence Force. ‘The Ridge’ was arranged by Flight Lieutenant Simon Brew, Director of Music, Royal New Zealand Air Force. The arrangement tells the story of the Battle of Messines through music and ceremony featuring vocalist Leading Aircraftman Barbara Graham. The marching in of the 2nd Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Battalion Regimental Colour symbolises the soldiers heading to the battlefield. Faint sounds of tunnelling can be heard while the nightingale sings. The still of the night is broken by by a colossal explosion and the battle begins. After the fighting many soldiers lie dead, the drummers beat a retreat and the Catafalque Guard is mounted. A battlefield prayer is offered for those who lost their lives.

Messines Model excavation Inside Out Oct 21st 2013
The Messines Model excavation during Spetember and October 2013 at Brocton on Cannock Chase in Staffordshire. The model of the Belgian town of Messines, was constructed in early 1918, (the battle took place in June 1917) in order to train New Zealand troopsAfter first being re-discovered by Lee Dent and Richard Pursehouse of The Chase Project in 2006 (not by archaeologists as the programme claims!), the model was finally uncovered in 2013. The Chase Project invited Liuetenant Colonel Mike Beale of the New Zealand Defence Force to visit the area, as the model was constructed by New Zealand troops.

The Battle of Messines
The Battle of Messines took place in June 1917, almost one year on from the beginning of the Somme Campaign. The battle is remembered particularly for the role of Nationalist and Unionist soldiers from across Ireland who fought alongside each other for the first time during the First World War.
This new film examines the events leading up to the beginning of the battle, the part played by Irish soldiers and the aftermath and consequences for those men.
The film accompanies a new exhibition at the Somme Museum, Newtownards launching June 15, 2017.
St Yvon Mine Craters, Belgium
The St Yvon mine craters, just south of Mesen, were detonated on 7th June 1917 as part of the Allied action to capture the Messines Ridge during World War One.
These two craters are located at the southern end of the assault line and have today become large ponds. The northern crater is sometimes referred to as Trench 122 while the southern one is called Factory Farm.

The Battle of Messines (7–14 June 1917) was an offensive conducted by the British Second Army, under the command of General Sir Herbert Plumer, on the Western Front near the village of Messines in Belgian West Flanders during the First World War.
