STORYLINE:
A mass was held next to the ruins of Port-au-Prince''s Catholic Cathedral on Sunday, a building which before the devastating January 12 earthquake had been the tallest in the Haitian capital, but whose facade is now the only part still standing.
Sunday''s solemn outdoor service comes a day after the funeral was held of the archbishop of Haiti''s stricken capital, Monsignor Joseph Serge Miot, who was killed in the quake.
Only a small number of funerals have been held since the 7.0-magnitude quake struck.
An estimated 200,000 people died, according to Haitian government figures cited by the European Commission.
The United Nations said on Saturday the government had preliminarily confirmed 111,481 bodies, but that figure does not account for corpses buried by relatives.
As many as 200,000 people have fled Port-au-Prince, a city of two (m) million, according to the U.S. Agency for International Development.
About 609,000 people are homeless in the capital''s metro area, and the United Nations estimates that up to one (m) million could leave Haiti''s destroyed cities for rural areas which are already struggling with extreme poverty.
The U.S. Geological Survey said on Sunday it had recorded 52 aftershocks of magnitude 4.5 or greater since the January 12 quake.
Authorities have stopped short of explicitly directing all teams to halt rescue efforts, and hopeful searchers continued picking through the ruins, but the focus was shifting to cleaning up and aid distribution.
U.N. relief workers said the shift in focus is critical to care for the thousands living in squalid, makeshift camps that lack sanitation.
While deliveries of food, medicine and water have increased after initial logjams, the need continues to be overwhelming and doctors fear outbreaks of disease in the camps.

The Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Filipino: Basilika Menore at Kalakhang Katedral ng Kalinis-linisang Paglilihi; Spanish: Basílica Menor y Catedral Metropolitana de la Inmaculada Concepción), also known as Manila Cathedral (Spanish: Iglesia Parroquial de Manila), is the cathedral of Manila and basilica located in Intramuros, the historic walled city within today's modern city of Manila, Philippines. It is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, a title for the Blessed Virgin Mary, the principal patroness for the Philippines. The cathedral serves as the episcopal see of the Archbishop of Manila, and is also considered as the Mother Church of the Philippines, along with Basilica of Sto. Nino in Cebu.
The cathedral was originally a parish church in Manila under the Archdiocese of Mexico in 1571, until it became a separate diocese on February 6, 1579 upon the issuance of the papal bull, Illius Fulti Præsidocode: lat promoted to code: la by Pope Gregory XIII. I am so glad that I got to come to Denver, but my ability and the amount of time that I had to enjoy the downtown Denver was so little and short lived, but I wanted to make an interesting and thought provoking video while I was there!

The Immaculate Conception is the conception of the Virgin Mary free from original sin by virtue of the merits of her son Jesus Christ. The Catholic Church teaches that God acted upon Mary in the first moment of her conception keeping her immaculate.The Immaculate Conception is commonly confused with the Virgin Birth of Jesus, the latter being, rather, the Doctrine of Incarnation. While all Christians believe in the Virgin Birth of Jesus, principally Roman Catholics along with various other Christian denominations believe in the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception.
Although the belief that Mary was sinless, or conceived without original sin, has been widely held since Late Antiquity, the doctrine was not dogmatically defined in the Catholic Church until 1854 when Pope Pius IX, declared ex cathedra, i.e., using papal infallibility, in his papal bull Ineffabilis Deus the Immaculate Conception to be doctrine. The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8; in many Catholic countries, it is a holy day of obligation or patronal feast, and in some a national public holiday.
