On top of Mexican Hat Rock SE Utah
The view is pretty much the same as from the bottom except you don't have a big hat shaped rock in front of you.
Unless you look down.
Bandito Route: An easy(A0) 5 bolt aid climb. 3 bolts had nice SS hangers, the other two(including the start) looked a bit light in the loafers. This was November 2011. There was a register at the top in a PVC tube but no writing utensils. Thanks to Ann S for the trusty belay.

Mexican Hat Flyover
A short clip from my QAV500 in Mexican Hat Utah. Gusty winds for the last few weeks made flying in this part of the country difficult. You can see several times the image shift as the aircraft is buffeted by the wind. The gimbal stabilization did an impressive job of smoothing the bumps, making the gusts look like little more than yaw errors.
Shortly after passing over the rock, I lost video from the aircraft and all LOS contact. These formations are much larger and much further away than they appear from the ground. I really thought the aircraft was a goner when I flipped into failsafe mode as a last ditch effort to recover. I had all but given up and was thinking of packing up and leaving when I heard the familiar buzz overhead. Naza flight controller to the rescue, the aircraft was descending directly over the launch site. I flipped out of failsafe and guided the aircraft to a nice soft landing next to my car.
Then I changed my underwear.
Valley of the Gods Camping - Mexican Hat, Utah
One of our bucket list items on our trip through Utah was to camp out at the incredible Valley of the Gods which is located in the Mexican Hat area. A few years ago we discovered the Valley of the Gods while driving through the area and were so taken by its beauty that we were looking forward to coming back one day and spending a few days of free camping in the midst of the stunning monoliths, pinnacles and rock formations that were eroded by wind and water over time.
Since the Valley of the Gods is owned by the Bureau of Land Management, which is the administration that oversees public land, wild camping is free and open to the public:
This means dry camping without any amenities, carry in and carry out and leaving no trace is an important part of wild camping on this public land.
Since Monument Valley is only a short drive away we combined a visit to these iconic desert landscapes and enjoyed a couple relaxing nights under the stars. The night sky is incredible out there and one can see the Milky Way with the bare eye. A great place for night photography for sure. The gravel and dirt road through the Valley of the Gods is a 17 mile long loop which is great for mountain biking, hiking or taking a scenic drive.

Behind the Mexican Hat
This video is the second video I've made of the Mexican Hat formations and focuses on the rock formation on the east side of the San Juan river. Like my other video on the Mexican Hat it's in 4K and was shot using a DJI Inspire 1 Pro drone. For a more detailed look at the Mexican Hat formation itself I'd recommend checking out my other video as seen in the link below.
Among the interesting features in this video are the Hoodoo like formations at the top of the Mesa on the east side. Also of interest, to me at least, are the chevron like formations seen in the background both south and east of the mesa in the foreground. I would like to hear from any geologists out there on the mechanisms that may have formed those chevron formations.
My primary interest in shooting these videos was an aesthetic/artistic one, but the use of the drone provides a perspective that causes me to ask questions I might not have asked myself if viewed from the ground. I'd be interested to know what a geologists view of drones is in this regard.
Mexican Hat, the area, is more than the Mexican Hat formation and in addition to this video which focuses on the east side of the San Juan river the area is also very near to the Valley of the Gods, the Moki Dugway, Goosenecks State Park, and Monument Valley.
Please check out some of my other videos from this area including drone videos in 4K of Mexican Hat, the Valley of the Gods, and the Moki Dugway. And feel free to check out my other videos on my channel. See links...

Chanboys 2018 Summer Road Trip pt. 4 - Denver, Moab, Mexican Hat and Zion NP
We finally arrive in the Mile High city: Denver, CO. Besides visiting all our relatives the highlight for the Chanboys was definitely fishing for crawfish. Over the course of 2 days they caught 16 crawfish using only a stick, some fishing line, a paperclip as a hook, and some sausage as bait.
Heading back west we took the I-70 through the rocky mountains and across the rest of the state. Most interstates are long boring stretches, but this section of I-70 was breathtaking. I even noticed a separate bike path that went along the interstate. The rest stop we stopped at (Grizzly Creek) was absolutely gorgeous.
Somewhere between Grand Junction, CO and Moab, UT we ran out of gas. It wasn't too bad. We were treated to an amazing Utah sunset and had to wait about 1.5 hours on the side of the road before AAA came to the rescue.
We woke up the next day at the Red Cliffs Lodge in Castle Rock just east of Moab. Another beautiful property nestled along the border cliffs of Arches NP. The rest of the day we visited Dead Horse Point state park and Canyonlands NP. Both were absolutely amazing albeit a bit hot towards the middle of the day.
As we drove south into Indian country we decided to stay in a tiny little town called Mexican Hat (named after a nearby rock formation resembling a large mexican style hat). We randomly picked the Hat Rock Inn to stay in and it quickly became our favorite hotel of the trip. The newly renovated swimming pool was on the edge of a cliff with the San Juan river running below. We played in the pool area all night while watching a lightning storm off in the distance with a constant warm breeze blowing by.
The next day we found ourselves at a spot made famous by Tom Hanks in the movie Forrest Gump, where Forrest decides to stop running. Its a gorgeous vista overlooking Monument Valley with a 2 lane stretch of road going straight towards it. This is where Parker discovered that he loves Indian fry bread with powdered sugar and honey.
By the end of the day we found ourselves at the west entrance of Zion NP. Tired and hungry we got a room at the Majestic View Lodge. We spent the evening in the swimming pool surrounded by the Zion rock formations. Not a bad way to end the trip.
Valley of the Gods. Monument Valley. Mexican Hat. Navajo Nation. RV Life.
On our way up to Moab we took a side turn to find some boondocking in the Valley of the Gods. While we had seen other Youtubers review this place it really was one of those you have to see it to really feel it's awesomeness.
Near the boarder of Arizona and Utah and Navajo nation the Valley of the Gods is a 17 mile dirt road on public lands. It is a scenic day trip or a 14 day camping experience.
Not far from Monument Valley. You can get away from the crowds and tourists and still experience the old west where many commercials and programs were filmed.
With tall red sandstone formations in the high desert landscape its a transport back in time and to remote places.

20 Strangest Geological Formations in the US
From rocks shaped like mushrooms to other rocks shaped like mittens, here are 20 Strangest Geological Formations in the US
Subscribe to American Eye!
9. The Devil’s Slide, Utah
Another rock formation given the name associated with the devil himself, is found on the border of Wyoming in Northern Utah’s weber valley. It almost looks like a petrified water in a sense. The slide consists of two parallel limestone strata that have been tilted and protrude 40 feet on the mountainside. Similar to some of the rock formations on this list, this one here shows how different layers of rock are more resistant to erosion than others. This is the case for the limestone that makes up the slide. It’s believed that the layer of sandstone that was once in the middle, completely eroded to the point where it’s no longer visible.
8. Mexican Hat Rock
Although the name might not be politically correct, it gets it’s name for the sombrero shape and has also been on various lists for unusual place names. A little town near by is named Mexican Hat But the rock formation is just as unusual! This formation is also found in Utah in San Juan county, located in the southeastern part of state. The rock is about 60 feet high and 12 feet wide. It appears to be perfectly balanced at the top and seems like it’d be pretty fun to climb. Climbers claim it’s fairly easy to get up but the rock at the top takes some rope.
7. Little Finland, Nevada
Possibly displaying the exactly opposite of anything Finnish, is known as little finland and it’s found in Southern Nevada just east of lake mead. It gets it’s name for the fin shaped formations that are found here. Possibly one of the strangest rock formations in the world, this one is also quite difficult to get to and may require some type of off road vehicle. It’s comprised of what’s known as Red Navajo Sandstone which is the kind that’s found at the Valley of Fire as well.
6. Angel’s Landing
Found at Zion National park in Utah, this well known hiking location doesn’t just look unusual, it’s also quite dangerous to those who aren’t taking the hike seriously. This formation juts out from the ground 1,488 feet and provides spectacular views of the valley below. The trail to get to the top has been known to be extremely strenuous and there’s no mattress at the bottom in case you fall. There’s been a recorded 5 fatalities recorded by park officials and there’s only a chain to help you get to the top. The layers of rock date back to 270 million years ago back when dinosaurs roaming the planet.
5. Waffle Rock
While many strange rock formations have somewhat believable, but mysterious explanations, not all are so clear! Believed to be 300 million years old, this rock formation has baffled geologists and has even send conspiracy theorists into frenzies! The geometric patterns we see in this photo are quite smooth and elaborate, it might make some people believe these were tire tracks from fred flintstone’s car or something! Other theories include, native american carvings, aliens and giant reptiles have all been mentioned. The geological explanation seems to simply be that the cracks in the rock were filled with quartz and other parts of the sandstone, continued to erode. What do you believe!
4. Skull Rock
Located in Joshua Tree national park, this spooky looking rock formation almost looks like a human skull if you look at it from the right angle. Although it might not perfectly resemble a skully it’s can be somewhat eery for hikers to find while passing by. It’s a favorite location for visitors at this massive national park and it’s only about a 1.7 mile hike to reach and many people claim it’s a pretty easy trail. The most notable features are the eye sockets and the fore head. Just use your imagination and it’s pretty strange!
3. Toadstools
Some more crazy rock formations in Utah, these one’s are fairly similar to the mushroom stones we mentioned early but much taller and made of red sandstone. Found near the border of Arizona the toadstools are protected under the Grand Staircase escalante national monument and this area seems quite interesting to explore. It almost seems as though you’ve reached an entirely different planet when you take a look at these toadstools, and they’re scattered throughout the land here.
2. Bisti Rock Formations
Located in San Juan County in the US state of New Mexico, this desolate area in the desert is home to some mysterious looking rock formations that we see in this photo. The photos of this place are taken in the Navajo Nation and formed nearly 70 million years ago. Geologists believe the strange appearance is due to a large amount of ash deposited into swampy land and moved around from a flowing river. Today, the rocks jut out from the ground and no two seem to match. Rock formations like these are important for us to preserve to better understand Earth’s past.

7. Idol Rock, Brimham Moor, North Yorkshire, UK
The 50-acre expanse of Brimham Moor in North Yorkshire, England is home to a number of curious rock formations shaped by tens of thousands of years of erosion.
But the most impressive of all is Idol Rock, weighing around 200 tons, Idol Rock balances its enormous weight atop a comparatively tiny, pyramidal stone.
The whole of Brimham Moor is considered one of the UK's strangest environments. During the Victorian era, the rocks had everyone thinking it was a place created by the Druids.
6. Peyro Clabado, Sidobre, France
Peyro Clabado Nailed Rock) is perhaps the most famous of the many enormous, eroded granite boulders and rock formations that make up the Sidobre in Languedoc, France.
The rocks are all that remain of a 300 million year old mountain range that loomed over what was to become western Europe.
Today, isolated outcrops loom over intrepid visitors who have hopefully updated their wills before visiting
5. Mushroom Rocks, Kansas, USA
Mushroom Rock State Park, located in the Smoky Hills region of Kansas, may only be 5 acres in size but it holds some of the oddest balancing rocks on Earth...
Couple of them do indeed resemble very very very large mushrooms.
formed through a process of erosion in which a hard mass of Sandstone resisted erosion while the underlying softer stone weathered away, forming a mushroom shape.
4. El Torcal de Antequera, Andalucia, Spain
El Torcal de Antequera is a nature reserve in Spain. It is known for its unusual landforms
Over the millions of years the rain and wind have been able to chisel away at the limestone layers to form incredible shapes.
Tourists can ascend like stairs on these rocks in order to get up close & personal with the rocks.
3. Balancing Rock, Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada
The Balancing Rock in St. Mary's Bay on Long Island, Nova Scotia seems to defy gravity as it stands on its end at the edge of the rock below.
The 9 meter high column of rock is attached by two small sections with a gap between that you can look through.
2. Mexican Hat Rock, Utah, USA
The Mexican Hat Rock is a unique rock formation that looks like a Mexican Hat it is located in Mexican Hat Utah just 22 miles from Monument Valley.
The persistent sands, wind, and water of time have sculpted the sandstone of the Mexican Hat Rock into what it is today.
The Hat has two rock climbing routes ascending it.
1. Kjeragbolten, Norway
Kjeragbolten is a Norwegian boulder, located in the Kjerag mountain in Rogaland, Norway. The rock itself is a 5 m³ glacial deposit wedged in the mountain's crevasse.
It is a popular tourist destination and is accessible without any climbing equipment, however it is suspended above 984-meter deep abyss. It is also a popular site for BASE jumping.
It was featured in the 2006 viral video Where the Hell is Matt? where traveler Matt Harding danced atop the precarious boulder.

The Impressive Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in Utah
Video created by To Travel is to Live: samhtravels.com #samhtravels
This YouTube video shows photos I have taken of the rock formations of Monument Valley at the Navajo Tribal Park. The park straddles the border of northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah of the Colorado Plateau. It covers an area of 28.7 Square miles and with its name means “Valley of the Rocks”. It preserves the Navajo way of life and has some of the most striking and recognizable landscapes of sandstone buttes, mesas and spires in the entire Southwest.

Mexican Hat, Utah to Flagstaff, Arizona - Road Scenes
This is my final video from Utah for 2017. This video includes some scenes from Mexican Hat, Utah to Flagstaff, Arizona.
Still waiting for Adobe to release a bug fix update for Premiere Pro CC 2018, so I needed to use a less robust editing program for this video. As a result, I was not able to do as much editing as I would have liked on this video. I recently upgraded Adobe Premiere Pro to the 2018 version - and it has turned out to be incredibly buggy. Hopefully they release a patch soon, but in the meantime the program crashes frequently. It is beyond frustrating, and the forums are full of similar complaints. This experience may be enough to move me away from the already-bloated and expensive Adobe products altogether.
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy this video.

U.S. Route 163 Scenic Byway in Arizona and Utah
I drove the 64 miles of U.S. Route 163 on April 17, 2012 from Kayenta, Arizona to Bluff, Utah where it merges with U.S. Route 191. The southernmost 44 miles is within the Navajo Nation where it cuts through the heart of Monument Valley. I stopped briefly at the visitor center to buy mementos and take pictures, then rode on to Mexican Hat, Utah which is named after a rock formation (seen in the video). From there, I drove to Utah's nearby Goosenecks State Park where the San Juan River carved deep meanders into the sandstone over millions of years. I found the park a great place to picnic before moving on.
