The 2.6-acre urban greenspace at the heart of South Beach was transformed in 2011 with a $1.2 million landscape renovation designed by South Florida landscape architect Raymond Jungles. The new landscape showcases Florida native plants and trees, significant new water gardens and cascading fountains, a welcoming entrance plaza, enhanced lighting and pathways and an expanded Great Lawn for corporate and social events.
HISTORY - In 1962 the City of Miami Beach created the Garden Center on a vacant site opposite the Miami Beach Convention Center that was built in 1957. Operated then as a City park, the Garden was situated on the historic Collins Canal, an integral part of the beginnings of Miami Beach. In the early 1900s pioneer John Collins dug the canal to transport mangos and avocados (called alligator pears) by boat to the Port of Miami from groves along what is now Pinetree Drive.
In the 1920s pioneer Carl Fisher developed Lincoln Road, luxury hotels such as the Flamingo and the Nautilus with polo fields and golf courses. The Garden site was originally a golf course. Fisher promoted tourism with the help of a baby elephant named Rosie who in 1921 served as golf caddy to vacationing President-elect Warren Harding.
By 1922 Miami Beach boasted the largest avocado and mango groves in the world, but Miami's agricultural roots wouldn't last much longer, sacrificed for the tourist trade. Tourism has long been a driving force in Miami Beach, but the City also experienced the impact of economic recessions, World Wars, and destructive hurricanes. The Garden had sadly deteriorated before the Art Deco renaissance of the 1980s and after Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
A group of residents approached the City in 1996 to create the Miami Beach Garden Conservancy as a non-profit organization with a mission to restore the Garden. Today's Miami Beach Botanical Garden is a public/private partnership, owned by the City of Miami Beach and operated by the Conservancy. The Garden has again become a dynamic venue for arts and cultural programming, environmental education and cultural tourism.

Botanical Garden Tour | Miami Beach
This is just a little video of my visit at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden during Memorial day weekend. This Botanical Garden, although quite small (2.6 acres), is one of Miami beach hidden gems. I find it really charming and has some of the most intoxicating smell of Ylang-ylang trees. It has a Japanese Garden, Native Garden, Butterfly Garden, Wetland Garden, Turtle Pond and many more unique and charming features. A must visit if you’re ever in Miami Beach.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami - must visit!
Fairchild gets its name from one of the most famous plant explorers in history, David Fairchild (1869-1954). Dr. Fairchild was known for traveling the world in search of useful plants, but he was also an educator and a renowned scientist. At the age of 22, he created the Section of Foreign Seed and Plant Introduction of the United States Department of Agriculture, and for the next 37 years, he traveled the world in search of plants of potential use to the American people. Fairchild visited every continent in the world (except Antarctica) and brought back hundreds of important plants, including mangos, alfalfa, nectarines, dates, cotton, soybeans, bamboos and the flowering cherry trees that grace Washington D.C.

Ep 24: Plant Tour of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami Florida
The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is a 83-acre garden located near Miami, FL and not to be missed. Founded by Robert Montgomery and named after his close friend and legendary plant explorer David Fairchild, this amazing garden has an extensive collection of rare plants. One of its primary missions is the conversation of rare tropical plants worldwide. I was fortunately enough to visit and walk the grounds during the International Aroid Society Show 2019. Please visit and support; you won’t regret it!
Cheers plant friends!
