Boating in Miami, Florida : Stiltsville, Nixon Sandbar, Key Biscayne
In this week's video we join our friends Raul and Dany for a whole day of fun in the water, cruising in Miami, South Florida aboard their power boat.

Our first point of interest is Stiltsville, nowadays a ghost town on the water. It began early in the 20th century as a gambling and bootlegging operation, as it was legal one mile offshore. From the 60's until the late 80's it was very much a party scene. There was even a place called Bikini Club where ladies wearing a bikini would get free drinks. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew was the last nail on the coffin of what was a town on stilts. Only seven structures remain, most of them in ruins.
Next we go to the famous Nixon Beach Sandbar for a swim. It is located right by the entrance of Hurricane Harbor. This area is home to many lavish waterfront mansions. Nixon Beach Sandbar is notorious for the numerous boat parties that happen here. People tie their boats together, and the flow of booze and loud music go on throughout the day. When we went, May 20, it wasn't so crowded. Perhaps because the water had not reached that magical 90ºF mark. After our swim and some drone flying we cruised around the harbor to see the homes of the rich and famous, and their boats up close and personal.
After all this we have worked up an appetite, so we navigate east, towards Cape Florida State Park and the creatively named No Name Harbor. After a pitcher of sangria, some minuscule conch fritters, and a delicious seafood paella, we decide to call it a day, sailing into the sunset, back to the marina.

Scenic drive from Miami to Key West, Florida, USA
We decided to take a day trip down to the southernmost point in mainland United States, Key West.
The drive takes you along Highway 1 Overseas Highway and passes through some 40+ islands before reaching Key West. Journey time from Miami to Key West is approximately 4 hours, but you pass through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world.
The Overseas Highway is a single lane Highway which passes over on one side, the Atlantic Ocean and on the other side, the Gulf of Mexico.
You basically cross from Mainland Florida and into the Caribbean without flying and the transition happens within minutes of starting the journey over the Overseas Highway. You see the sea turn all different shades of blue and all the way to an emerald colour.
This is the full journey from the Florida Turnpike all the way to Duval Street in the centre of Key West.
Enjoy!

Close, but not too close. One of Florida's oldest attractions, the Alligator Farm in St Augustine,
VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:
Florida tourists trying to get a close, but safe, look at some of the wilder life in the south are heading up.
The Alligator Farm in St Augustine is fascinating enough on foot.
At 120-years-old, it's one of the state's oldest tourist attractions and it is the only zoo in the world that displays all 23 crocodilian species, including the nearly extinct Philippine crocodile.
About 150 visitors a day head to the overhead canopy at the farm.
A combination of zip lines, bridges and lines in a 49-station obstacle course gives tourists an eagle eye view of the farm's inhabitants.
Strapped into harnesses, visitors can swing on 10 zip lines over swimming alligators and crocodiles.
The most amazing, awesome thing I've done ever, said Ava Martin, 53, who lives just north of St. Augustine. She and her 21-year-old son Corey were taking the course for the second time.
Most awesome thing, it is worth it if someone asks me, Corey Martin said.
He added that being over a big alligator was freaky.
It's just a totally different perspective, says Scott Brown, who designed and now manages the Crocodile Crossing at the zoo.
You can go to any zoo in the world and look at them through the glass, but you can't go anywhere and look at them over the top of the enclosures like you can here.
In addition to the crocodiles and alligators, the zipline also takes visitors over lemurs, giant tortoises and vultures.
The longest zip-line on the course is 300-feet, or the length of a football field.
There are some very fast lines, requiring some quick breaking.
The zoo spaces out the guests to ensure they aren't rushed through the course, which takes about 90 minutes to complete.
That includes behind-the-scene views that other guests won't get.
The course is a do-it-yourself adventure.
Guests are given instructions at the beginning on how to clip and unclip themselves to safety lines.
A guide then follows on the ground and makes sure they're following safety rules, while at the same time providing facts about the animals they're seeing.
Visitor Jackson Lawson, 12 years old from Hahira, Georgia, said he saw the whole alligator farm from above while celebrating his birthday.
I stopped on a zip line just to hang there for a second to look at mostly the alligators because we were just so close to them above them. It was really pretty. It was cool.

Elegant Sarasota, FL with rentals and homes for sale & Real Estate Investments
SARASOTA GULF TO BAY TO GOLF
The European type city of Sarasota is truly the cultural capital of Florida. World class art, culture and entertainment abound, such as ballet, opera, shows, symphony, theater and the famous Ringling Museum of Art.
The walkable, active and vibrant downtown has many art galleries and studios with many masterpieces, spectacular international restaurants and cuisine, sidewalk cafes, waterfront dining and chic nightlife.
With the Gulf of Mexico as part of its tropical backyard, Sarasota has five islands or keys as us Floridians call them. To the North is Longboat Key. The key offers a cosmopolitan atmosphere consisting of upscale condos on the gulf-side and bayside homes with canals and marinas for the boating community.
Lido Key is directly west of downtown. It is much smaller in size and is famous for the St. Armands shopping and restaurant circle. Art, fine jewelry, designer clothes, and novelties are featured. The famous Columbia Restaurant is a landmark. Also, Lido Key is home to the famous Mote Marine Aquarium.
Between downtown and Lido Key is Bird Key. Bird Key is an exclusive high-end residential community. Waterways, canals and boating are a dream come true. The Sarasota Yacht Club is sailor's heaven.
To the South is the most popular and more casual, Siesta Key. It is a large key with upscale bay front residences and delightful canal homes for boaters. Siesta Key is famous for its Crescent Beach. The beach is five miles long and is recognized as the number one beach in the entire United States. It has the finest, cleanest and most dazzling white sand which consists of 99% pure quartz grains. Many luxury condos border the beach and gulf. On the northern part of Siesta Key is Siesta Key Village. Again, shops, restaurants, and night life welcome tourists along with the locals.
The most southern key in Sarasota County is Casey Key. It is long and narrow with a quiet conclave of secluded multi-million dollar gulf and bay front homes. A scenic drive on Casey Key is an unforgettable experience. This is truly a high priced paradise.
Also, in the southern part of Sarasota County is a large development called Palmer Ranch. Palmer Ranch consists of 14 separate gated communities with residential homes, condos and villas. One of the communities is Prestancia which is home to the famous Tournament
Players Golf course. Some of the other gated communities include Deer Creek, Turtle Rock and Silver Oak, which are all outstanding high scale residential areas. Just to the South is an elegant and sophisticated community called the Oaks Club.
Also, Sarasota boasts many golf course communities. There are eight private clubs and many semi-public and public courses. To the East is the Concession, developed by Jack Nicklaus, the Founders Club and Laurel Oaks. To the South are the Tournament Players Club of Prestancia and the Oaks Club.
Sarasota is fascinating, fun and is Heaven. It's like living in Paradise every day.
Boating Timelapse in the Keys - Islamorada Florida
Fishing in the Keys - Islamorada Florida. We left around 7AM and were back by 11AM. Enjoy!
Saltwater fishing boats vary widely in length and are once again specialized for various species of fish. Flats boats, for example, are used in protected, shallow waters, and have shallow draft. Sportfishing boats range from 25' to 80' or more, and can be powered by large outboard engines or inboard diesels. Fishing boats in colder climates may have more space dedicated to cuddy cabins and wheelhouses, while boats in warmer climates are likely to be entirely open.
Islamorada, a Village of Islands, is an incorporated village in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It is located on the islands of Tea Table Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Windley Key and Plantation Key in the Florida Keys.

The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida, forming the southernmost portion of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern part of Key West is just 90 miles (140 km) from Cuba. The Florida Keys are between about 23.5 and 25.5 degrees North latitude, in the subtropics. The climate of the Keys is defined as tropical according to Köppen climate classification. More than 95 percent of the land area lies in Monroe County, but a small portion extends northeast into Miami-Dade County, such as Totten Key. The total land area is 137.3 square miles (356 km2). As of the 2000 census the population was 79,535, with an average density of 579.27 per square mile (223.66/km2), although much of the population is concentrated in a few areas of much higher density, such as the city of Key West, which has 32% of the entire population of the Keys.
The city of Key West is the county seat of Monroe County. The county consists of a section on the mainland which is almost entirely in Everglades National Park, and the Keys islands from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas.
The Overseas Highway is a 127.5-mile (205.2 km) highway carrying U.S. Route 1 (US 1) through the Florida Keys. Large parts of it were built on the former right-of-way of the Overseas Railroad, the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway. Completed in 1912, the Overseas Railroad was heavily damaged and partially destroyed in the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. The Florida East Coast Railway was financially unable to rebuild the destroyed sections, so the roadbed and remaining bridges were sold to the state of Florida for $640,000.
Sea Ray 550/580 Sedan Bridge Walk Through
A walk through look at a 2005 model year Sea Ray 550/580 Sedan Bridge. Looked at this during the Miami Yacht & Brokerage Show in February of 2015.
We had been on a newer 580 model Sea Ray earlier in the day, and despite almost identical specs, found that there was enough little differences to make this one preferential (both models share an overall length of 58' 7 and 16' beam). For example, the side cabin on the 580 has a more restrictive feeling bunk bed configuration, as opposed to the 550, which gains room due to the fact the boat only has a single washer/dryer combo unit, which leaves more space in this side cabin.
As nice as this yacht is, it will be a little bit of time before we move up from our current Sea Ray 400 Sedna Bridge model. That said, I am looking forward to pursuing one more 'dream boat' ;-)

The Butler Chain of Lakes: Boating, Kayaking and Fishing...How Wonderful! | Windermere, Florida
The Butler Chain of Lakes: Boating, Kayaking and Fishing...How Wonderful!
The charming, sleepy little Town of Windermere is located smack dab in the heart of 11 interconnected, sandy bottom lakes, consisting of almost 5,000 acres of pristine water.
Florida Sportsman Magazine article states that, “with its gin clear water, cypress swamps and superb fishing, the Butler Chain of Lakes has a lot to offer the angler.”
With depths of over 30 feet in most of the 11 lakes and it's clear water and deep ledges, schools of shad, crappie, bluegill, longnosed gar and of course, the largemouth bass, can all be found in the Butler Chain year-round. The Northern lakes are crystal clear and lower lakes have a more tannic or tea-like color.
The northernmost and clearest lake is Lake Down with 900 acres. This lake is great for boating, water skiing, and tubing.
Wauseon Bay was named after a town in Ohio and has 100 acres
The largest of the chain with 1600 acres is Lake Butler. Another great lake for boating, water skiing and tubing. It also has a 10 acre Bird Sanctuary called Bird Island.
Lake Louise has 140 acres and has an old 1920’s plantation along the edge of the lake called Chase House.
Luxury Celebrity Homes can be viewed from 86 acre Lake Isleworth.
Lake Tibet-Butler is the second largest of the chain with 1200 acres. The canal between Lake Isleworth and Lake Tibet-Butler is one of the most picturesque of all. Along the Southwest edge of the lake there are 440 acres of wetlands called the Tibet-Butler Preserve.
To the left of Tibet is 135-acre Lake Chase and 121-acre Lake Blanche. It has spots up to 40 feet deep. Largemouth bass can be found in this lake.
Lake Sheen is south of Lake Tibet and has 565 acres. The Orange County Sportsman Club is located here.
Further south is Pocket Lake with 126 acres, and lastly, the smallest lake along the Butler Chain is Fish Lake with 23 just acres.
There are few places to launch along the lake both public and private. Non-residents and locals without slips or docks can launch from Lake Down along Conroy-Windermere Road across from Isleworth however please note there is NO parking. For the best access, try R.D Keanes along Chase Road. It is Open Sunrise to Sunset and offers plenty of parking. Residents of Bay Hill and Isleworth that obtain memberships to their respective Golf Clubs and Marinas also have access to the Butler Chain as well as members of the private Sportsman Club located off of Lake Sheen.
First time visitors and Adventuresome orange county residents wanting to enjoy the wonders of the Butler Chain of Lakes can rent a bass boat or pontoon boat from a variety of local boating companies.
