I always enjoy seeing folks make that transition from being just victims to being folks that are able to help other folks, and leaders in the community. It's the root of our democracy at work when it happens. - Beverly May, resident of Wilson Creek, KY
Beverly May's family has lived on Wilson Creek in Floyd County, Kentucky, for five generations, and was one of the first settling families in the region. Located in the heart of coal country in eastern Kentucky, Floyd County is dotted with small, quiet communities and families with stories similar to Beverly May's. The region, which lies within the Big Sandy Valley of eastern Kentucky, houses the Mountain Arts Center and the Kentucky Opry, and the Country Music Highway runs through the county seat of Prestonsburg. Country music stars such as Loretta Lynn, Ricky Skaggs and Dwight Yoakam were born in neighboring counties. The Middle Creek National Battlefield in Floyd is the site of the largest and most significant Civil War battle in Eastern Kentucky, and the beautiful Jenny Wiley State Resort Park lies near the center of the county.
Floyd - part of the Appalachian Mountains' Cumberland Plateau and once lush with beautiful hardwood forests - is one of the twelve major coal-producing counties in eastern Kentucky. In the last 30 years, Kentucky coal counties have seen a decrease in the amount of deep mined coal and an increase in the amount of strip-mined and mountaintop removal coal mining. Simultaneously, the number of mining jobs have decreased by 82%, resulting in high unemployment numbers for Floyd County.
Today, Miller Brothers Coal Company is trying to move into the small community of Maytown and mine the unspoiled ridge top above Wilson Creek. Plans include three valley fills, which would bury the headwaters of Wilson Creek and Big Fork. The Big Sandy River, which Wilson Creek flows into, is already known as the most polluted river in the state.
Hard experience has taught eastern Kentucky that a large mine can devastate a community. Homes can be severely damaged by blasting, water wells are lost, dust from coal trucks and the mine itself can make it difficult to breath and flash flooding is a worry every spring. Flooding is already so frequent and severe in Floyd County that the Army Corp of Engineers is relocating the small town of Martin. Many families become discouraged or intimidated and leave. Two families on Wilson Creek have sold their land to Miller Brothers and a few absentee landowners have leased their rights, but the majority of the 94 families who live in the community are fighting to save their homes.
If you get put in this position you find out real fast that you can't do nothing [on your own], you have to organize and you have to fight it however you can, said Beverly.
Beverly May has joined with other local residents to oppose the planned mine and save her community. With help from the regional group Kentuckians for the Commonwealth (KFTC), they have succeeded in banning coal trucks on the curvy one-lane road that runs along Wilson Creek, but their fight is far from over.
If enough land owners say no I absolutely will not sign, it means that it's not profitable, so what we have done is very vocally and publicly said no...not in my lifetime this is not going to happen, said Beverly.
To support Beverly and her community contact Kentuckians for the Commonwealth at 606-878-2161 or at kftc.org

WorldStrides Civil War Contest Participant -- [Breaking News: The Battle of Griswoldville]
Although there obviously was no CSATV, all reports offered in this video were of actual events and their corresponding dates.
The Battle of Griswoldville was the first battle of what would come to be known as Sherman's March to the Sea. After the failing of the Confederate forces under the command of Major General Joseph Wheeler the Georgia militia, which was mostly a pickup force of boys and old men began to fight against Indiana the Indiana Regiment and the Kentucky and Pennsylvania Calvary. These makeshift confederate forces were annihilated. By the end of the battle, the Union counted 79 wounded, 2 missing, and 13 killed. On the other hand, Confederates suffered 472 wounded, 600 captured, and 90 deaths (our report softened those numbers because the time frame of the report was before accurate details had arrived). After this brigade, led by Brigade Generals Charles C. Walcutt and Charles R. Woods, defeated the Confederate the forces, they continued on as part of General Sherman's march to Savannah.
Our slogan, Newscast of Civilization, is based off of the Harper's Weekly slogan, A journal of civilization.
The reporters' and pundits' names in this video were based off of real people. David Ross Locke was a political commentator of the time, most famous for his Nasby Letters, written under they pseudonym Rev. Petroleum V. Nasby. Abraham Lincoln was once quoted as saying, I intend to tell him if he will communicate his talent to me, I will swap places with him! Matthew B. Brady is by far one of the most recognizable names to come from journalism in the civil war. Many consider him the father of photojournalism. It is because of him that we have many of the famous images of the Civil War and the historical figures surrounding it. Mary Boykin Chesnut was a Confederate author made famous for her diary which was published years later under the title Mary Chestnut's Civil War. This is widely considered to be the most important work of literature by a Confederate author. Also, the quote featured in the film, They say no living thing is found in Sherman's track - only chimneys, like telegraph (telephone) poles, to carry the news of Sherman's army backward, was a direct quote of hers pulled from her diary. Joshua Hill was a US Senator from the state of Georgia who lived a relatively quiet life during the civil war, then became vocal again during Reconstruction. However, he is relevant to the events in this video due to his close friendship with General Sherman. Because of this friendship, and Hill's reputation as a Unionist, Hill's home in Madison, Georgia was spared by Sherman and his men.
The news stories scrolling along the news ticker at the bottom of the screen were actual events found in a newspaper of the time, The Richmond Daily Dispatch. The actual stories were pulled from the issue of November 22, 1864, the same date as the Battle of Griswoldville, and the same date that a breaking newscast like this would have aired. Thanks to Richmond University and the Perseus Project for compiling editions of the newspapers onto the Internet. They can be found at

Civil War - Battle of Richmond | Kentucky Life | KET
The Kentucky Life feature on the 1862 Battle of Richmond has been nominated by the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for a Regional Emmy Award.
The Battle of Richmond, Aug. 29-30, 1862, was the largest Civil War battle in Kentucky until the troops met again in October in Perryville.
In the hot, dry summer of 1862, Confederate and Union soldiers met in Madison County for a two-day battle.
Confederate Gen. Kirby Smith was pushing deep into the heart of Central Kentucky from the south. There was disagreement on the Union side on how to defend Richmond against the more experienced Confederate troops. The abolitionist Cassius Clay, a Union major general, wanted to make a stand on the bluffs of the Kentucky River. His view lost out and he was relieved of command four days before the battle.
Instead, Union Maj. Gen. William Bull Nelson ordered troops deployed in nearby Lancaster and Danville. Brig. Gen. Mahlon D. Manson however, did not receive the message to move toward Lancaster. He moved just south of Richmond instead, and Smith's Confederate forces were waiting. Retreating Union forces were at Richmond Cemetery when Nelson arrived to rally them. A large man at 300 pounds, he is reported to have said, Boys, if they can't hit something as big as I am, they can't hit anything. He was shot in the thigh and there his rally ended.
Of the 6,500 Union troops, 206 were killed, 844 were wounded, and 4,303 were missing. In contrast, the Confederate losses were 98 killed, 492 wounded, and 10 missing.
Now the Battle of Richmond Association works to preserve these hallowed grounds where almost 300 soldiers died. Battlefield Park is located on U.S. 421 across from the Blue Grass Army Depot.
There were 751 total Ohio Valley Regional Emmy Award entries this year, a record number, and only 291 received nominations. Nineteen KET productions and programs were nominated for an Emmy Award. This segment was produced by Paul Smith.

The song is Tennessee by Hans Zimmer
Therefore this video has not or ever will be sold for profit, The soul creation of this video & my other videos are totally nonprofit, as a biography, as a teaching tool, to bring attention and demonstrate the beauty of Harlan County.
For years sadly most of the media has betrayed us so terribly. Hardly ever showing the hard, honest working people of this county, never pointing out the gifts this area has too offer.
These videos are a personal biography through my eyes and what I see every day, the love for my family & the beauty of this county. All I ever wanted was for everyone to have a chance to see the Harlan County that we are proud of and that we love so much.
THANK YOU to Hans Zimmer & many others for allowing us this wonderful chance to make just a little bit of magic : )
Thank You so much : )
DISCLAIMER: THE MUSIC IS COPYRIGHTED TO THEIR RESPECTIVE OWNERS, NO INFRINGEMENT WAS EVER INTENDED.
I'm truly sorry, but I don't know how long this video will be allowed to be played on youtube. sadly many companies are beginning to force youtube to start blocking videos.
It's going to break my heart when they begin to block my videos of Harlan County..
Thank You to The Kingdom Come State Park
Kingdom Come State Park, with an elevation of 2,700 feet, is the crowning jewel in the crest of Pine Mountain. Named after the popular Civil War novel, The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come, by Kentucky author John Fox Jr., the park preserves 1,283 acres of unspoiled wilderness.
Some of the most extraordinary rock formations in the state are featured at this park, including Log Rock, a natural sandstone bridge, and Raven Rock, a giant rock exposure that soars 290 feet into the air at a 45-degree angle!
Black Mountain Gazebo Overlook is the first overlook visitors discover when driving from US 119. This southern view renders the city of Cumberland, the Poor Fork River valley, and the girth of Black Mountain.
Creech Overlook, at the park's northeastern extent of paved roads, unfurls the great Cumberland Plateau beneath the visitor. Because Pine Mountain is taller than the hills to its north, a crisp autumn day yields an endless ocean of brilliant fall foliage from Creech Overlook.
12 O'Clock Overlook, At over 2700 feet in elevation and is the highest point in any of the Kentucky state parks.
Bullock Overlook, elevation over 2680 feet, you can walk out on this awesome cat walk over looking beautiful views of Whitesburg.
Hi Everybody
Here is just a few of the beautiful overlooks in Kingdom Come State Park.
At first you will see the 12 O'Clock Overlook and then on to Bullock Overlook and then to the Creech Overlook. Each one having gorgeous breath taking views.
But sadly we didn't get to film the Halcomb Overlook and many others beautiful Overlooks.. there are so much to see and so little time in one day.
I hope so much you might like the video : )
God Bless You
