Happy 60th anniversary of the Milan Miracle
MILAN, Ind. (Joe Webb) -- For the last 60 years, March 20th has meant a lot more than the beginning of spring in Milan, Indiana.
It's the day everything changed when little Milan knocked off big Muncie Central 32-30 in the finals. Pat Marshall was an Indians cheerleader. Gene White was the starting center.
Pat Marshall said, How the field house just erupted. I mean it just went wild. It was so exciting.
Came back the next day and the town's full of people. Later we saw it was estimated 30,000. Cars were backed up 7-10 miles, White said.
We talked Thursday in the converted bank that is now home to the Milan '54 Hoosiers Museum. Named in part for the 1986 movie based on the 1954 season. The movie Hoosiers often tops the list of best sports movies.
Milan's win is commonly referred to as the biggest sports story in Indiana history. The Milan Miracle was a timeless David vs. Goliath story. Muncie Central had 1,600 students. Milan 160.
But both schools could only put 5 on the floor. Milan's Bobby Plump clinched the MVP award with his game winning 15-footer with 3 seconds left.
If I'd missed it I sure wouldn't be sitting here talking to you, Plump said.
Plump says the real Milan Miracle is how the win raised the bar. Four of the five starters got college scholarships. It changed attitudes for all Milan grads.
Maybe in 4 years, 18-19 total when to college. In 4 years. Of the 30 in my graduating class 17 of us went to college, said White.
60 years later the paint may be fading and the memories may be a little grainier but the message is still crystal clear: No matter how little you are you can go big and go home a winner.

Milan came through to capture the IHSAA 43rd annual basketball tourney by defeating the Bearcats of Central (Muncie) in the final
game by a 32-30 score when Bob Plump dropped in a basket in the final four seconds to break a 30-30 tie. Last year, the Milan Indians
were in the final four and were known as the people's choice. This year when they came through again, this was changed to Milan's
Mighty Men.
The Indians led the Bearcats 14-11 at the quarter and controlled the play in the second quarter. At half time they rested with a six
point margin 23-17. In the third quarter, the Bearcats came back and tied the game 26-26. Early in the fourth quarter, a Muncie player dropped in two foul tosses to lead 28-26. Milan immediately scored twice from the field with the Bearcats tying the score again
in the last minute of play to set the stage for the winning field goal.
In the first afternoon game, Muncie defeated the Elkhart Blue Blazers 59-50. The game was a nip and tuck battle during the first half with the Bearcats leading 26-23 at half-time. Elkhart came within three points during the fourth quarter but dropped behind when Muncie's fast break began to function.
The second afternoon game found Milan meeting the Gerstmeyer Black Cats from Terre Haute, the 1953 runner-up five. After a short
early lead, the Gerstmeyer quintet dropped behind and the Indians won by a 60-48 score.
During the first quarter, the Indians built up a good lead and were out in front 21-12, at half time the score was 29-21 Milan, the third
quarter was about even with the Indians still in front 39-34 and in the fourth quarter they took charge of the game by out scoring
Gerstmeyer 21-14.
All the radio stations of Indiana aired a program prior to the afternoon games entitled Salute to the IHSAA, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Association. The Purdue Glee Club and The Belles of Indiana appeared on the program. Besides the 51 radio stations carrying the games, the tourney was viewed over nine television stations.
A total of 751 schools entered the sectional tourneys. New gross receipts and attendance marks were again established.
