Places to see in ( Milan - Italy ) Monumental Cemetery
The Cimitero Monumentale is one of the two largest cemeteries in Milan, Italy, the other one being the Cimitero Maggiore. It is noted for the abundance of artistic tombs and monuments. Designed by the architect Carlo Maciachini (1818–1899), it was planned to consolidate a number of small cemeteries that used to be scattered around the city into a single location.
Officially opened in 1866, it has since then been filled with a wide range of contemporary and classical Italian sculptures as well as Greek temples, elaborate obelisks, and other original works such as a scaled-down version of the Trajan's Column. Many of the tombs belong to noted industrialist dynasties, and were designed by artists such as Adolfo Wildt, Giò Ponti, Arturo Martini, Dante Parini, Lucio Fontana, Medardo Rosso, Giacomo Manzù, Floriano Bodini, and Giò Pomodoro.
The main entrance is through the large Famedio, a massive Hall of Fame-like Neo-Medieval style building made of marble and stone that contains the tombs of some of the city's and the country's most honored citizens, including that of novelist Alessandro Manzoni.
The Civico Mausoleo Palanti designed by the architect Mario Palanti is a tomb built for meritorious Milanesi, or citizens of Milan. The memorial of about 800 Milanese killed in Nazi concentration camps is located in the center and is the work of the group BBPR, formed by leading exponents of Italian rationalist architecture that included Gianluigi Banfi.
The cemetery has a special section for those who do not belong to the Catholic religion and a Jewish section. Near the entrance there is a permanent exhibition of prints, photographs, and maps outlining the cemetery's historical development. It includes two battery-operated electric hearses built in the 1920s.

MILAN WWII BRITISH COMMONWEALTH MEMORIAL (ITALY)

A Trip to the Cassino War Cemetery in Italy - WWII
While in Naples, we took a side trip to the Cassino War Cemetery in Cassino, Italy. Within the Cassino War Cemetery is the Cassino Memorial.
49,261 members of the British Commonwealth died in the fighting in Italy and many of them have no known grave. These soldiers are memorialized on the walls of the Cassino Memorial.
Of the 4,054 names on the Cassino Memorial panels, 194 are Canadian. The Memorial itself consists of 14 marble pillars rising 5 metres on either side of a reflecting pool. The 4,054 names are inscribed on the pillars.
My wife's great uncle Wilfred Nelson Nadon is among the names, so we paid him and the other Canadians memorialized and interred at the cemetery a visit in May 2008.

GENOA, EXPLORING the spectacular monuments of MONUMENTAL CEMETERY (STAGLIENO), ITALY ⚱️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno which is an extensive cemetery located on a hillside in the district of Staglieno of Genoa, Italy, famous for its monumental sculpture. Covering an area of more than a square kilometre, it is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe.
It is a stunning cemetery famous for its extraordinarily delicate & lifelike mourning sculptures
Designed by the famous Genovese architect Carlo Barabino in a Neo-Classical style, the Staglieno Cemetery (Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno) opened in 1851. A compromise between the formality of the traditional orderly camposanto layout and the newly fashionable wilderness style of boschetto irregulare, seen in Père Lachaise in Paris, the grounds included cloisters, garden paths, and a reproduction of the famous Pantheon in Rome. The new cemetery quickly became the fashionable death option, and increasingly was a showcase for world-class sculpture.
Italy, a European country with a long Mediterranean coastline, has left a powerful mark on Western culture and cuisine. Its capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, with Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David and Brunelleschi's Duomo; Venice, the city of canals; and Milan, Italy’s fashion capital.

Lake Bolsena, British Military Cemetery, Italy
On 3 September 1943 the Allies invaded the Italian mainland and five days later Italy switched sides and joined the Allies. The Allies had a number of problems mainly due to the terrain and eventually the advance stopped at the Gustav Line which was hinged on Monte Cassino. The line was breached in May 1944 and as the Germans fell back, Rome was taken by the Allies on 3 June 1944.
The Germans made their first stand after being driven north of Rome at Bolsena and to the east of Lake Bolsena, there was a tank battle in June 1944 between the 6th South African Armoured Division and the Hermann Goering Panzer Division.
The site for the cemetery was chosen in November 1944, and graves were brought in from the battlefields between Bolsena and Orvieto. Almost one-third of those buried at Bolsena were South Africans. In 1947, 42 graves were brought into the cemetery (into Plot 4 Rows G and H) from the Island of Elba. The cemetery is on the actual site of the first camp occupied by General Alexander's advanced headquarters after the liberation of Rome and it was here that King George VI visited General Alexander at the end of July 1944.
Bolsena War Cemetery contains 597 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 40 of them unidentified.
The cemetery was designed by Louis de Soissons.
Bolsena War Cemetery is situated on the eastern side of Lake Bolsena just west of the SS2, between Rome (104 kilometres) and Siena (115 kilometres). Take the Orte exit from the autostrada A1. Go 30 km west towards Viterbo then turn right on to the SS2.
The two nearest towns are Montefiascone, 8 kilometres to the south, and Bolsena on the shores of the lake, 7 kilometres to the north. The cemetery entrance can be clearly seen from the main road.
Cemetery address: SS2 Cassia (Nord) K106 - 1027 Montefiascone (VT) Lazio.
GPS Co-ordinates: Latitude: 42.586337, Longitude: 12.001811.
The cemetery is permanently open and may be visited anytime.
Please note that as there are steep steps and a long steep path within the cemetery, wheelchair access is impossible.
