Minakuchi Hikiyama Matsuri Festival 水口曳山祭
Held on April 19-20 in Koka, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, the Minakuchi Hikiyama Festival has ornate Hikiyama floats pulled through town. On the festival eve, the floats are lit up with paper lanterns from 7 pm and Minakuchi-bayashi festival music is played. On the 20th, at 9 am, the floats are paraded through the streets as they head toward Minakuchi Jinja Shrine (near Minakuchi Jonan Station). Portable shrines also make their way to the shrine. During midday, ceremonies are held at the shrine. At 2 pm, a procession of Chigo children and portable shrines leave the shrine.
Hiking at Keimei Falls in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan
This waterfall is located to the west of Mt. Sasagatake near the border of Mie Prefecture. The ruins of an old temple can be found atop the mountain. According to legend, a golden rooster that proclaimed happiness on the morning of the New Year lived by Aka Ike, a pond on the temple precincts. The name, Keimei-no-Taki, the Falls of the Cock's Cry, comes from this story.

Tsuno Shrine in rural Takashima shi near Lake Biwa in Shiga Ken!
This is the Tsuno Shrine (津野神社) in rural Takashima-shi near Lake Biwa in Shiga-Ken. There are huge trees flanking the Sandō (参道) or the approach-way leading to the main shrine. All around or rice paddies, birds chirping and the noise of the cicada's (蝉) is overwhelming.

Rice seedlings are transplanted into the nursery beds and prayers are offered for the protection of Inari, so that the plants may grow strong and produce a rich harvest.
Inari Ōkami 稲荷大神 is the god of fertility, rice, and agriculture.
戦国武将・加藤嘉明の洋剣「水口レイピア」、国産だった
滋賀県甲賀市水口町で、戦国武将のものと伝わる西洋式の長剣「十字形洋剣」（１７世紀前半、江戸初期）は、国内で模造されたものだった。東京文化財研究所（東文研）や市教育委員会などが調査し、西洋と異なる技術跡を確認した。ただモデルの洋剣の由来や誰が作らせたのかは謎だ。
長さ１０４・５センチ、刃の幅１・５センチ前後でフェンシングの剣のように細長い。「レイピア」と呼ばれ、１６～１７世紀の欧州で用いられた突き刺すタイプの剣だ。柄には複雑な装飾が施されている。国内で唯一確認されている当時の洋剣とみられ、地名から「水口レイピア」と名付けられた。
洋剣は、豊臣秀吉に仕え、賤ケ岳の合戦で「七本槍」の一人として名をはせた戦国武将・加藤嘉明（１５６３～１６３１）の所持品と伝わる。

Tsuchiyama Saio Princess Procession あいの土山斎王群行
The Saio princess was an unmarried, young Imperial princess, often the Emperor's daughter, who was appointed (by divination) to be the High Priestess of Ise Grand Shrines in Mie Prefecture from the 7th to 14th centuries. For about 660 years, over 60 Saio princesses served at Ise Grand Shrines. The new Saio princess traveled from Kyoto to her Saiku palace near the Ise Shrine. The journey took 5 nights and 6 days, and passed through Tsuchiyama in Koka, Shiga Prefecture. Held on the last Sunday in March, this festival reenacts the Saio Gunko procession in Tsuchiyama to Tarumi Tongu which was one of the five temporary palaces where the Saio lodged along the way. You could call this festival a continuation or sequel to Kyoto's famous Aoi Matsuri procession which has a Saio-dai princess. Photos:

2012-10-19 Hikone to Omihachiman, Shiga Prefecture 滋賀県彦根市から近江八幡市へサイクリング
The second to last day of cycling from Hikone to Omihachiman. Highlights include 0:30 cycling by the castle and through the historic down town, to 6:20 leaving town and entering the rural areas, to 19:30 approaching the hills and the mountain pass at Azuchi Castle. This video is the best one I have of rural Japan.
