Backpacking to Eagle Lake - Mineral King Valley - Sequoia National Park
We decided to take a quick weekend trip to backpack to Eagle Lake in Mineral King Valley, which is in Sequoia National Park. We all did a lot of fishing for some wild brook trout, and we all ate some great meals up there as well.
All the fish I caught were on Sierra Slammer jigs and Thomas Cyclones.
Sasquatch even made a visit to camp on this trip!

Atwell Mill Campground in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park is a tent only campground located along Mineral King Road in a remote part of the park. Open during summer months only this is one of the highest elevation campsites in the National Park. 21 sites available on a first come first served basis situated along the East Fork of the Kaweah River in a once logged sequoia grove. Potable water is available and pit toilets.
The long winding and slow going drive to the campground takes guests up and out of Three Rivers CA climbing along a very scenic mountain road. The majority of the drive is in a low shrub area with majestic views of the mountains and valleys around. As campers near Atwell the road starts to dart in and out of second growth Sequoia stands. The campground is on the right hand side of the road as the roadway enters the main group of trees.
All dirt roads and parking pads the best sites are 11-17. The NPS declares this a tent only campground but truck and van campers can easily utilize the sites (other RV types are not advised). Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. The campground is built along a hillside and there is some elevation difference between sites and along the roads.
Hiking trails depart this area. Silver City is a small vacation home town under 2 miles up the road from Atwell Mill Campground; guests can find food and showers at the small store.

When I first started researching King's Canyon (and Sequoia National Park), a location John Muir called A rival to Yosemite, I found numerous daytime landscape photos of its stunning vistas, but very little night astrophotography. With the Giant Sequoia Trees and the impossibly steep cliffs of King's Canyon serving as beautiful-yet-formidable obstacles to an unobstructed sky, it seemed a worthy challenge to seek out some night skyscapes in the parks, while capturing the verdant beauty of the landscapes by day. This meant a lot of serious driving across much of the combined 1,353 square miles of the two parks (with a principal focus on the Mineral King and Zumwalt Meadows areas) but it paid off with some really amazing night skies, including the biggest meteor strike I've captured on camera (1:41 & 2:26), some epic summertime milky way passes, and more wild star trails experimentations.

We arrived on the summer solstice of June 21st, 2014 and shot for 3 days and two nights. Most night shots were captured with 25 second exposures on two Canon EOS 6D's with a variety of wide, fast lenses, including a 24mm f1/4 and 28mm f1/8. The star trails effect is created by tracing rotations of the Earth's axis, using long exposures and a freeware rendering program called STARSTAX.
Unlike the desolate deserts of shoots past, these locations were teeming with wildlife - from native trout running in the streams, to deer so tame they'd walk right up to you. Our most exciting nature encounter to date came when a big brown bear stumbled upon us as we were setting up a timelapse!

Humans have traveled or lived in the Southern Sierra for at least 6-7,000 years. In the higher mountains, and also down into the western foothills, lived hunters and gatherers remembered today as the Monache or Western Mono. West of the Monache in the lowest foothills and also across the expanses of the Great Central Valley were a second group, the Yokuts.
In the late 1700s and early 1800s, Spanish began exploring the edge of the Sierras. Soon afterwards, trappers, sheepherders, miners, and loggers poured into the Sierras seeking to exploit whatever the mountains had to offer. By the end of the 19th century, San Joaquin Valley communities increasingly looked to the Sierras for water and recreation. In the struggle between all these competing interests, two national parks were born that became what we know today as Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

Backpacking Mineral King - Sequoia National Park
On this trip we backpacked in the Mineral King area of Sequoia National Park. We traveled along the White Chief Mine trail and stayed one night in the back country. The views were amazing as always in Sequoia National Park. This part of the park offered a lot of solitude along with some good animal sightings as well.

We only had one day to explore Sequoia National Park in California so we hiked some of the main trails in the park. We hiked the Congress Trail and climbed Morro Rock. Thankfully we were able to take the free shuttles around the park as there are many roads that our RV Big Booty Judy was not able to access. We had a wonderful time in Sequoia National Park and even got up close and personal with a few deer.

Mineral King Sequoia National Park
TVL Video shows the wonders of Mineral King in Sequoia National Park. The area is steeped in history, starting with the Native Americans of the time, moving forward to the mostly failed silver mining operations, a move by Disney to build a ski resort, and finally to becoming a portion of the Sequoia National Park. Much of the wildlife behave as though tame. Historical reference from the 19th century refers to the deer as tame.
Mineral King was best known, from the beginning of settlement, as a place of rest or a resort. Many would escape the summer heat of the valleys in the cool mountain air. Even though many tried and failed at mining, the joy of being in this pristine wilderness was unmatched. Walt Disney wanted to build a premier ski resort here, but after plans to build a monorail and millions spent, walked away from the idea. Mineral King was considered to be the best potential for skiing in the U. S.
Finally this high mountain valley was designated as part of Sequoia National Park. The cabins you see in the Park are privately owned. Congress established that you could own, sell or pass them to heirs, but they can't be rented. Many of them are a century old and built in the high alpine style that adds to the nature of this special place.
Few Native Americans entered the area as it was considered sacred. The first white man to enter the area was in 1869. The lure of mineral riches attracted many only to fail, but did not fail to enjoy the beauty of this remote mountain wonder that is Mineral King.
