Houghton, Michigan
Home of Michigan Tech, the city of Houghton sits across Portage Lake from Hancock, spilling over the bluffs to a very scenic waterfront accented with the Waterfront Trail, a paved trail that runs the entire length of the community. The historic downtown and a string of parks, as well as part of campus, are connected by this ribbon of bike path. Atop the hill, the A.E. Seaman Mineral museum is a must-see for learning about copper mining history and enjoying the colorful displays of minerals.
Museum of Mining - Michigan Tech (Houghton, MI)
Visits by twin sisters to the Michigan Museum of Mining on the campus of Michigan Technological University, in Houghton, Michigan. Two visits because one of the sisters lost the hematite ring she got at the museum gift shop during her first visit and needed a return trip to pick up a replacement (actually five replacements -- at $1 each).

Grand Rapids, Michigan
Grand Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located on the Grand River about 25 miles east of Lake Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 188,040. In 2010, the Grand Rapids metropolitan area had a population of 1,005,648, and the combined statistical area of Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland had a population of 1,321,557. Grand Rapids is the county seat of Kent County, Michigan, second largest city in Michigan (after Detroit), and the largest city in West Michigan. A historic furniture-manufacturing center, Grand Rapids is still home to five of the world's leading office furniture companies, and is nicknamed Furniture City. Its more common modern nickname of River City refers to the landmark river for which it was named. The city and surrounding communities are economically diverse, and contribute heavily to the health care, information technology, automotive, aviation, and consumer goods manufacturing industries, among others.
Grand Rapids was the home of The First Family of U.S, Boxing: Floyd Sr., Jr., Jeff, and Roger Mayweather, World Championship Boxer James Toney, singer and song writer Anthony Kiedis, the filmmakers Paul Schrader and Leonard Schrader, the singer Al Green and U.S. President Gerald Ford, who—along with his wife Betty—is buried on the grounds of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids.

Hancock & Houghton Images
These images were gleaned from one of my old VHS video tapes. Showing different areas of Hancock & Houghton, MI; as well as the world's heaviest lift bridge that spans The Portage Waterway. This same Area used to be one of the large producers of copper in the USA. The Quincy Mining Company along with the Calumet and Hecla mining company in Calumet produced more
processed copper than any other area in the United States and perhaps the world wnen mining was at it's peak.
