Minnesota
Minnesota /mɪnɨˈsoʊtə/ is a U.S. state in the Midwestern United States. Minnesota was carved out of the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory and admitted to the Union as the 32nd state on May 11, 1858. Known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, the state's name comes from a Dakota word for clear water.
Minnesota is the 12th largest in area and the 21st most populous of the U.S. States. Nearly 60% of its residents live in the Minneapolis--Saint Paul metropolitan area (known as the Twin Cities), the center of transportation, business, industry, education, and government and home to an internationally known arts community. The remainder of the state consists of western prairies now given over to intensive agriculture; deciduous forests in the southeast, now cleared, farmed and settled; and the less populated North Woods, used for mining, forestry, and recreation.

Liyana: US Tour 2009
Liyana is a bend of disabled musicians from Zimbabwe. Don't be fooled by the term disabled, they are extremely able and talented and spread their message of hope and joy to the world though their inspirational music and performing art. In 2009 Liyana traveled to the United States for the first time. I was lucky enough to capture their experiences and edit together this amazing story of the Liyana US Tour 2009. Prudence, the lead singer went on to win an Oscar for the Roger Ross Williams documentary about her life.

MN 13 Part II
2nd part of a photo book tour by the author Elaine Davis.
Minnesota 13 is a historical overview of the years from 1920-1933, when moonshine production dominated the county while the 18th Amendment was in effect. The skill of the local moonshiners -- combined with the perfect strain of corn -- produced some the best whiskey in the United States. It was bootlegged and sold in speakeasies from New York to San Francisco and competed successfully with the best alcohol rumrunners could provide.
How a Somali Refugee Is Creating Community in Minnesota
Hudda Ibrahim and her family fled civil war in Somalia for a new life in St. Cloud, Minnesota. She soon discovered that her neighbors were curious about Somali culture, but many were afraid to ask questions. Instead of falling to assumptions and misconceptions, Hudda wanted to encourage a community based on conversation. She started Dine and Dialogue—a program that invited her neighbors to ask questions and get to know each other, all over a home-cooked meal. From hijabs to Sharia law, no subject is off the table. Today, she continues to host this open forum every month, bridging the gap between people and finding a path to compassion through the stomach.
The story of America is the story of immigrants. We teamed up with Minnie Driver to share stories of some incredible individuals building a stronger, more united America. Check them all out in our latest series, “I Am An Immigrant.”

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D- MN)
On February 16, 2016, IOP and the University of Chicago Law School welcomed back Senator Amy Klobuchar (JD '85) for a lunch discussion with University of Chicago Law Professor Geoffrey Stone. Senator Klobuchar discussed her work in the Senate, and her new book, The Senator Next Door, which chronicles her life in public service, and her journey from high school prom fundraiser to the United States Senate. This event was co-sponsored by the University of Chicago Law School.
Senator Klobuchar is Minnesota's senior United States Senator. A Democrat, she was first elected to the Senate in 2006; she was later reelected in a landslide and named to Senate leadership. A national leader, she has a well-earned reputation for working across the aisle to pass legislation that supports families, workers and businesses.
