Mission San Luis Rey de Francia | ???? God Quotes
Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is a former Spanish mission in an unincorporated part of San Diego County, surrounded by the present-day city of Oceanside, California, United States. The mission was founded on June 13, 1798 by Padre Fermín Lasuén, and was the eighteenth of the Spanish missions established in California. Named for Saint Louis, the mission lent its name to the Luiseño tribe of Mission Indians.
The current church, built in 1811, is the third church on this location. It is a National Historic Landmark, for its pristine example of a Spanish mission church complex. Today the mission complex functions as a parish church of the Diocese of San Diego as well as a museum and retreat center. San Luis Rey De Francis Mission raised about 26,000 cattle as well as goats, geese, and pigs.

Schuyler Building 1888 Oceanside California
Built in 1888 by John Schuyler, this originally two story building was home to the Schuyler Hardware store, a historically significant business that enabled more development to take place in the early years helping pave way for the fantastic growth we see today. Back in its original state, the Schuyler building stood proud with its brick exterior and large over-sized ceilings, and over most of its life up until fairly recently the building continued to retain most of its prowess. Slight changes did occur, like being converted to a 3 story building by reducing the ceilings, and various businesses such as a cash grocery store that occupied the building in the 1930’s also added their own touch. Currently: Major Restoration is taking place right now.
Mission San Luis Rey King Of California Missions
Today's Mission is used by business, charitable, religious and community organizations for meetings, spiritual retreats and conferences. City, County and State officials use it on a regular basis for meeting with their constituents and other social events. The center accommodates up to 100 overnight guests.
The Chamber of Commerce, the Navy and Marine personnel from Camp Pendleton, The Luiseno Band of Mission Indians, all make use of the Mission buildings and grounds for their cultural events. North County Earth Day is celebrated annually as Pepper Tree Day in the courtyard around the Missions pepper tree -- the oldest pepper tree in California. The annual Heritage Ball is a gala event with an elegantly catered dinner and dancing. The Heritage Ball is held late in the summer.

California Mission #18: San Luis Rey de Francia
Had an awesome behind-the-scenes tour at Mission San Luis Rey de Francia! Plan your own visit via their website:
San Luis Rey de Francia, 18th mission
4050 Mission Ave., Oceanside, 92068, (760) 757-3651
Known as the King of the Missions, San Luis Rey de Francia lies in a sheltered valley just east of Oceanside on State Highway 76. Named for Louis IX, the crusading King of France, the cross-shaped church was dedicated on the Feast of St. Anthony in 1798 by Father Lasuen. Architecturally the most graceful of California's missions, it has been restored according to the original plans and designs. Today the mission gardens include a fruit orchard where California's first pepper tree still grows. The church, which seats 1,000, is adjacent to a six-acre enclosed central square that includes a sunken garden, elaborate stone terrace and octagonal mortuary chapel.

The California missions began in the late 18th century as an effort to convert Native Americans to Catholicism and expand European territory. Spain was responsible for the missions, which scholars believe were attempts to colonize the Pacific coast of North America. There were 21 missions in all, lasting from 1769 until about 1833. The mission system brought many new cultural and religious ideas to California, though critics charge the systematic oppression of Native Americans amounted to slavery.

San Luis Rey River 2013
The San Luis Rey river is located in sunny Southern California. The river travels a long path to the ocean. The San Luis Rey is also part of the San Diego landscape. The San Luis Rey River Estuary is located in the City of Oceanside. The river mouth gives way to ocean beaches and a picturesque Harbor.
San Luis Rey River is an ephemeral river which stays dry most of the time. The San Luis Rey River is a river in northern San Diego County, California. The river's headwaters are in the Cleveland National Forest near Palomar Mountain. The river drains into the Pacific Ocean on the northern end of the city of Oceanside. Discharge: 36.3 feet³/s (1.028 meters per second), Length: 69 miles (111 km), Basin area: 557 square miles (1,443 km²).
The river's mainstem starts east of Rocky Mountain in the Cleveland National Forest and flows generally south-southwest. The West Fork's headwaters rise as a pair of tiny streams, Fry Creek and Iron Springs Creek, just to the north of Palomar Mountain. These two streams combine into the West Fork, which flows southeast through the Mendenhall Valley. The West Fork joins the main stem at Lake Henshaw The Henshaw Dam, built in 1922, controls 36% of the watershed. The river continues through Indian (Native American) reservations and farms for some distance. At some points of the river there is enough water to ride in a tube. The river then crosses the 15-Freeway, intersects historic highway 395, and runs along-side Highway-76. Highway-76 has been under-going upgrades that include expansion of the highway over the recent years.
The river eventually reaches the coastal city of Oceanside, passing a small airport (City of Oceanside Municipal Airport), and crossing the 5-Freeway and a railroad bridge. The river is confined by a 400-foot wide earthen channel bounded by two levees along the lower seven miles. There is also a trail used by walkers, bikers, photographers, and others alongside the river levees in Oceanside. In the past, mineral and aggregate mining has occurred at several sites within the river channel. The San Luis Rey finally empties out into the Pacific Ocean. Much of the water is diverted from reaching it's natural destination (The Oceanside Harbor).
The City of Oceanside discharged treated wastewater into the river from 1958 to 1974. The Oceanside General Plan Land Use designates the majority of the San Luis Rey River floodway for Open Space and Agricultural Use. Much of the agriculture includes Citrus trees and Avocado trees. A Habitat Conservation Plan has been developed and is currently being implemented. West of the 5-Freeway, 12 acres of riparian habitat have been designated for the Conserved Habitat. The estuary located at the river mouth is a mix of fresh river water and salt water pushed from high ocean tides. The estuary at the mouth of the river was dredged in 1964 to create the Oceanside Harbor. The Oceanside harbor sits on the north side of the river mouth. The Oceanside Harbor and the lower river channel are owned by the City of Oceanside.
The river-mouth is reinforced with a jetty that protrudes into the ocean from the shore. A second set of jetties just north of the river-mouth Jetty (South Jetty) define the harbor mouth used by boaters. Occasionally sand and rocks are dredged from the harbor entrance and pumped south where it is deposited on shore adjacent to the south-end of the river mouth. These deposits help to maintain a beach area and the river mouth. Both sides of the shore are blooming with life. The surf in the immediate area is generally good. The combination of features at the shoreline attract surfers, swimmers, boaters, and outdoor enthusiasts.
