Mission Santa Clara Chapel and Gardens | Santa Clara University
The mission of Santa Clara was established in 1777, just a year into the United States' 8 year long war of independence. Father Junipero Serra established this 8th of 21 missions. He walked the length of California to establish and oversee the missions. The Spanish government was obliged to give at least a show of honor and submission to the purpose of the missions although Junipero Serra often stood between Native peoples and certain slavery by the Spanish who were concerned with extracting gold from the Americas. Now the Santa Clara Mission is home to the University of Santa Clara. Excellent gardens and surroundings including roses and 130 year old wisteria plants grace the chapel area.
5th grade Mission Project Santa Clara de Asis
Found:
My mission project is Santa Clara de Asis was the eighth mission founded by Spanish. It was first founded January 12, 1777 on the banks of the Guadalupe River and it was the first to bear the name of a woman, St. Claire of Assisi, an early companion of St. Francis. Flood, fire and earthquake forced five relocations until the Mission finally settled on this site in 1822.
Location:From the start, Mission Santa Clara was meant to serve as the sister mission to Mission Dolores in San Francisco.
The Spanish Viceroy Bucareli’s grand design intended Mission Dolores (and its Presidio) to protect the mouth of San Francisco Bay while Mission Santa Clara was to anchor the South Bay receiving goods and services meant for the new Pueblo of San Jose. The South Bay Area was an excellent location for a mission.
Founder:
Established by Father Junipero Serra
History: California is a home to a wide variety of cultures. Before the gold rush is 1849,California had few visitors, They were hunters of different tribes. Their lives were changed by the arrivals of Spanish Colonists who built 21 missions along California. Each Mission was constructed in hip to convert California Indians to Christianity .
A mission is a place where people go to teach others about a certain religion
Impact on Local Tribes: The Ohlone lifestyle can be described as “hunter-gatherer” as they did not cultivate crops or herd domestic animals but instead hunted native game as needed and took advantage of naturally available foods.
This way of life had sustained the Ohlone for thousands of years, but following their 1769 encounter with the Spanish explorers, things were to change drastically—going from traditional hunter-gatherers to an agrarian society; from holding strict tribal identities to having blended “mission” identities; from their native world view to becoming, at least outwardly, Catholic Christian converts and citizens of the Spanish Empire
Agriculture a LiveStock: Cattle rearing was the largest moneymaker for the missons. Mission santaclara was the most productive in this area, ranking 4th in livestock. One significant, but unintended, environmental motivator for choosing to join the missions was the increasing scarcity of native game & natural foods brought about by the padre’s imported herds of cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, and goats.
Over-grazing of the native grasses and growing displacement of the native game gave the missions an increasing monopoly over the local food supply. Eventually, the new trade skills of ranching, farming, tanning, adobe brick & tile making came to be seen as necessary skills for survival.
Daily Life of the Missionaries: It was The friars responsibility to educate the neophytes in the Catholic religion and the Spanish language. They led the young children in studies each morning and afternoon while the adults worked.
Mission Lay Out and Bell Tower : Lay out as shown in the video has Church,Cemetery,Workshops,Courtyyard,Frairs Quarters,Vineyard,Soldiers Quarters
Significance : In 1850, newly appointed Dominican Bishop Joseph Alemany approached a Jesuit priest, Fr. John Nobili, S.J. to see about turning Mission Santa Clara into a college. This meant transferring the Mission parish from Franciscan ownership to Jesuit ownership so on March 19, 1851, Mission Santa Clara and its adjacent lands became the first college of higher learning in the new state of California.
Current Use of Mission: Today Mission Santa Clara continues to serve as a spiritual hub and the student chapel for the community here at Santa Clara University.
What I like about the mission: I liked to learn how the mission was built and its uses. Also I liked the Minecraft part of showing it.

Replace and Reframe the 4th Grade Mission Project
Thousands of California schoolchildren have built models of the Spanish missions. It's long been the capstone History-Social Science project in 4th grade.
But for many California Indians, the missions are a reminder of the conflict, conquest, and forced labor their ancestors endured there. So when their children are asked to build a monument to the conquerors who decimated their culture, they are insulted and outraged.
“Building missions from sugar cubes or popsicle sticks does not help students understand the period and is offensive to many.” — State Board of Education, July 14, 2016
Many teachers would like to change what they teach about this important era in California’s history, and in doing so also comply with the new California History-Social Science Framework, but they need your help.
Your donation will help us put culturally and historically inclusive, standards-compliant curriculum into the hands of fourth grade teachers. Your gift will help us change the narrative on California Indians.

State Route 85 (SR 85) is a freeway which connects the cities of Mountain View and southern San Jose in the U.S. State of California. The route provides an alternate to U.S. Route 101 (US 101), bypassing downtown San Jose and instead passing through the foothill cities of Los Gatos, Saratoga, and Cupertino, roughly paralleling the Santa Cruz Mountains up to its interchange with I-280 (making its alignment and purpose similar to I-405 in Los Angeles and I-215 in the Inland Empire). The highway intersects with major highways such as I-280, SR 17, and SR 87.
SR 85 was built in two phases: the first, comprising the northern half, runs 5.7 miles from Stevens Creek Boulevard near Interstate 280 to its northern terminus at US 101 in Mountain View, was built in the 1960s. The second half, running 18.5 miles from US 101 in southern San Jose to Stevens Creek Boulevard in Cupertino, remained unbuilt until the 1980s and was opened in segments between 1991 and 1994. Prior to the construction of the freeway, the route was signed along Mathilda Ave and De Anza Blvd from US 101 near SR 237 southwards until its junction with SR 9 in Saratoga, which then served as its southern terminus until it was decommissioned the same day the freeway opened.
