And, ring that bell like it's Christmas morning! (Also, because I hear they don't celebrate Xmas the same here . . .)
You ever have something super hectic happen, even though you had a plan, but then your plans change, and yet the gods that control the Japanese weather decide mortals need another reminder of their feebleness?
Well, that's pretty much what happened here!
We had heard, literally the day before, confirmation that this day was going to be THE LAST EVER Sunflower Festival held in Takanabe. Like. Ever. Like ever, man.
So, we rushed up there all the way from Kushima (where we live now, and very nearly almost biked the 100km+), in order to beat the Category 2 Hurricane equivalent Typhoon that was blowing in the next day. Not wanting to die, we got a ride from our new friend Gaku, who was kind enough to take us.
And, when we arrived . . .
We discovered that all the PREVIOUS typhoons that have been wrecking southern Japan with weeks worth of nonstop torrential rains, heavy winds, and dark skies have caused this year's sunflower crop to be a bit down in the dumps. Seriously, apparently this season has been exceptionally, uncharacteristically rainy and storm filled, and has caused some notable landslides in the Kumamoto area. Now, this place is known for having weather like this, but it's also known for being THE sunniest place in Japan, hence the sunflowers.
Yet, I'm glad we made it! And, I'm even more glad to discover that the festival WILL BE CONTINUING! Yippee! So, now all of us will have many more chances to see the sunflowers in their full, turgid glory.
But, wanting to make a day out of our roadtrip through Miyazaki Prefecture, we also made a stop at one of Gaku's favorite udon restaurants. This was my first time ever trying udon, but I've always wanted to taste the cold variety!
Just as well, on our way back, we made a nice long stop at the Summer Night Market in Aoshima, just south of Miyazaki city proper. This Night Market is a gorgeous affair, lined with candle-lit lanterns across a seaside park, speckled with local vendor booths, and sporting plenty of live music. Plus, it's near some top-notch botanical gardens that are worth browsing. Though I suspect, unless you can read Japanese halfway decently, you may have some difficulty. But, if memory serves, there are English accommodations as well!
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this shorter video and are excited for more to come! Thanks for watching, and experiencing Japan in Tandem.

Car Ferry Boat from Kyushu to Shikoku on the day after the typhoon - Cruise with my car in Japan!
So our reservation for the Ferry to carry us and our car to Shikoku from Kyushu was cancelled the day before because of the typhoon. We got up REALLY early the next day to get in the walk in (I guess drive in!) line and tried to get on the first ferry off the island... and we made it! This is the video of my adventure!

KAGOSHIMA CITY KYUSHU JAPAN
Train Cruise Episode 28
The Southern Rays and Breezes of Miyazaki
Miyazaki, located in southeastern Kyushu, is a sun-drenched prefecture facing the Pacific Ocean. In this episode, we travel 170 kilometers from north to south along its coastline, hopping on different trains named Sunshine or Nichirin, which means the sun in Japanese. On our way, we have a spectacular view of the Devil's Washboard, the huge wave-like rock formations on the seashore, savor sweet, delicious mangoes, and come across designer handbags and lampshades made of Japanese cedar. We enjoy the blessings from the sun and the sea in Miyazaki.
Kagoshima City - Japan - Sakurajima - Gourmet Street - Hokke Hotel
Living in the Shadows of a Volcano
Kagoshima City is the administrative, economic, and cultural center of Kagoshima Prefecture and is a castle town dating back to the 14th century. The city and its suburbs are located on the northeastern part of Satsuma Peninsula and face the Kagoshima Bay, which is more commonly known as Kinko Bay.
The smoking Sakurajima centered in Kinko Bay is one of the main symbols of Kagoshima Prefecture. Throughout history Sakurajima (4 km from central Kagoshima City) has been the site of multiple massive eruptions and continues to be one of the most well-known active volcanos in the world. Sakurajima was originally an isolated island however, as a result of the eruption of 1914, the island was joined to the adjacent Osumi Peninsula. The leva fields can still be seen on the island as testament to the history of the volcano's eruptions. - Japan Tourism

Exploring the Kyushu Island, Japan - Your Road Trip Guide
Kyushu is a paradise for nature lovers with its stunning countryside and unique landscape with trees, mountains and active volcanoes. The island offers a more relaxed experience of Japan, giving you a break from the hustle and bustle of the most popular cities in the country.
What I most like about Kyushu Island is how easy and accessible the island is to visitors, and it's the perfect location to enjoy a road trip in Japan.
So, what are you waiting for? Pack your driving licence, grab a rental car and explore the major sights around Kyushu Island.
I've put together a fun itinerary for exploring Kyushu that can be done over the course of one week.
From the onsens of Oita to the stunning rolling countryside of Yufuin and from the volcanoes of Aso to the castles of Kumamoto to the exciting nightlife of Fukuoka, Kyushu has it all.
We rented a car in at Oita airport and dropped it in Fukuoka.
There will also be a few Rugby World Cup Games on Kyushu. So plan in a few extra days and don't miss the Japanese onsen culture.
Oita is a good spot for nightlife and during the day you could head to Beppu to visit the Jigoku Hells Visitor Onsen. As a meal you could try a steam cooked meal.
The landscape of Yufuin with the Yufu mountains are stunning and it's fun cycling down the hill there.
Also not too far away is Mount Aso with its active volcano.
We stayed in a traditional Japanese Ryokan, which is an unique experience. We show you what to expect.
In Kumamoto we visited the Kumamoto Castle, which is getting rebuilt, after it got destroyed by an earthquake.
When you walk around the town, you'll find Kumamon, the mascot of the city, everywhere.
Definitely have some ramen for lunch. A good place is Ajisen Ramen. Afterwards you could have a tea ceremony at the beautiful Suizenji Garden.
In Fukuoka we stayed in the Book and Bed hostel, which is a cheap & unique accommodation.
A highlight is the Yusentei Park and also a trip to the Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine. Close by is the Ichiran Dazaifu Sando ramen noodle restaurant. Very yummy!
The Kyushu National Museum is already worth seeing because of its architecture.
The Ohori Park is another oasis in Fukuoka & the right place to shoot some nice photos.
And to end the night, head to the Yatai Food Stalls for more good food and bars in the surrounding area.
Kyushu has so much to offer for visitors to Japan and I'm happy that you've stumbled across this guide to get some tips and advice for your future trip to the island.
