Photographing Prague - Moments In Time Ep 10
With stunning classic, baroque, rococo, and gothic architecture, Prague is as beautiful as it is historic, and it’s also one of the best cities in Europe for photography. Since it’s such an amazing place to visit, Prague also attracts an incredible amount of tourists that can make getting certain shots very difficult. In this episode, we navigate the old streets and buildings looking for the best light, while learning how to best avoid the crowds.
I meet up with my friend and talented conceptual photographer and artist, Erik Johansson, as he takes us on a tour of his studio and walks us through his incredible creative process from the conceptual side all the way through production and final digital editing. His work is truly surreal and it’s an amazing experience to get a full demonstration of his workflow.
During this episode, we pay a visit to Centrum PhotoSkoda, one of the largest and most impressive camera stores in Europe. The owners Milan and Martin Skoda, take us on a tour of both the modern and the historic as we visit the museum and learn about Prague’s rich history and photographic legacy.
In this Moments in Time series, we take a journey around the world together, and share about photography, travel, people, food, experiences, and everything that happens between the frames I capture. Join our Moments in Time Flickr community for access to two exclusive mini episodes, and new episodes will be published here on YouTube every Tuesday morning.

How to Use a Frottoir in Jazz
If you watch a Zydeco band in action, or if you're watching a Second Line in Jazz, you'll see a musician wearing an instrument that looks like a washboard. It's called a frottoir, and it's an integral part of music in the Louisiana area. Ricky Dirty Red Gordon tells you more!

Performing V4 - Biennial of VARP-PA Residents_sum up
Performing V4 - Biennial of VARP-PA Residents took place 26-27-28th February 2015 in Prague (CZ)
Performing V4 - Biennial of VARP-PA Residents is an initiative by 4 performing arts organizations like:
L1 Egyesület (H), Nová síť (CZ), Art Stations Foundation (PL) and Truc sphérique (SK), to launch a professional festival taking place every 2 years that presents the work of selected artists supported by International Visegrad Fund’s Residency Programme for Performing Arts (VARP-PA).
The biennial is conceived in a mobile, nomadic format: it takes place in a different V4 country every 2 years in order to promote the outputs of the VARP-PA programme in the whole region. By creating a platform to present the work of selected residents, the project not only provides greater visibility for V4 cooperation, but also ensures access to the work of exciting emerging artists and insight into current tendencies of contemporary performing arts in the V4 region. It acts as a platform for debate and dialogue with the general public and professionals from V4 countries and the broader European arts scene.

THYSSENKRUPP WINS ITALY METRO STATION MAINTENANCE WORK
thyssenkrupp has been selected by Azienda Trasporti Milanesi and Azienda Napoletana Mobilita to maintain 585 units in metro stations in Milan and Naples, Italy, respectively. The multiyear contracts cover 237 elevators and 115 escalators in 60 Milan stations and 83 elevators, and 150 escalators are in more than 23 Naples stations. The latest contracts build on thyssenkrupp's existing relationship with Italian metro systems, including a recently awarded contract to supply, install and provide maintenance for mobility systems in metro Line C in Rome, the longest in Italy.
WOMAN DIES IN FALL FROM WTC TRANSIT HUB ESCALATOR
A 29-year-old New Jersey woman died on February 11 when she fell approximately 30 ft. from an escalator in the World Trade Center (WTC) transit hub, also known as the Oculus, in New York City (NYC), various news outlets, including CBS News, reported. Officials initially said the woman, who was traveling with her twin sister, leaned over the railing to retrieve a hat and fell over the side. Security footage later revealed she was lying prone on the handrail to imitate flying, New York Daily News said. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, the US$3.9-billion hub connects New Jersey’s PATH trains and NYC’s subways and is used by more than 300,000 passengers daily.
CHINESE GOVERNMENTS HOPE TO REDUCE ELEVATOR ACCIDENTS
In light of elevator fatalities across China, governments are taking steps to increase accountability, Global Times reports. In Northwest China, Baoji has begun offering liability insurance, and in East China, Qingdao has revised regulations to require that elevators in schools, hospitals, supermarkets and other public places be outfitted with surveillance cameras. The Qingdao regulations also stipulate maintenance entities set up 24-hr. hotlines and dispatch rescuers to scenes in a timely manner. National regulations already require elevators to be cleaned, lubricated, adjusted and checked every 15 days, but this is often ignored. Forty-one people died in elevator accidents in 2016, a drop from 48 such fatalities in 2015. Early this month, 43- and 44-year-old male relatives from Shenyang plunged down a shaft to their deaths from the 28th to third floors.

The international premiere of a documentary dedicated to the late Czech architect Jan Kaplický, co-founder of London based internationally acclaimed practice Future Systems followed by a debate chaired by Deyan Sudjic, with Eva Jiřičná and other guests.
The film featuring Brian Clarke, Eva Jiřičná, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Václav Havel and the team Future Systems tells the story of Kaplický's last grand design. The project for the National Library in Prague called the Eye over Prague is radical, exciting and far enough ahead of its time to provoke a fair degree of controversy. For Kaplický, a Czech-born émigré, it also represents a triumphant return to his homeland, a vindication of his uncompromisingly forward-looking philosophy and, eventually, a tragically poetic ending to his remarkable career. After winning the international competition chaired by Zaha Hadid, the popular and much supported design met opposition from the Czech government and the local administration and the fierce battle began.
(Olga Spátová, Czech Republic, 2010, 90').
A following debate, chaired by Deyan Sudjic with Eva Jiřičná and other guests will focus not only on Jan Kaplicky's work, but also on the process and struggles of architects to have their visionary and bold designs approved and built.

President's Message January 2018
Hi, I’m Jonna Gerken, FY18 President of the Society of Women Engineers. 2018 is off to a roaring start for SWE.
We have five WE Local conferences in the U.S. this year and the first one is this month in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There are plenty of opportunities to meet and network with other women engineers from your area, grow your career and participate in SWENext DesignLab outreach programs at all five local conferences. Go to to learn more and register.
We also have several international events this year including WE Local India in Pune and WE Local Czech Republic in Prague. This month SWE and IBM are conducting a workshop in Shanghai, and we are hosting a “women in engineering” symposium with the Chinese Academy of Engineering in April.
Our Congressional Outreach Event is March 14th and 15th. The theme is Diversity and Inclusion Fuels Innovation in STEM. If you’re interested in speaking with elected officials on Capitol Hill about the importance of diversity and inclusion in the STEM workforce, participate in this event.
The WE18 Call for Participation is underway. Submit your presentations for SWE’s Annual Conference in Minneapolis by Monday, March 12th.
You can also win $1,000 by sharing your innovative outreach techniques. The deadline for the FY18 Wow! Innovation Challenge number 2 is February 12th.
